My Hattiesburg Forum changes

June 16, 2007 on 5:08 pm | In Information | No Comments

There have been several changes in the forums section over the past few weeks.  The most recent of which was a change in the forums structure.  We have added an Oak Grove forum, as well as, made the Petal forum a main forum in our community.  We’ve also added a forum called Campus Life to cover Southern Miss, Jones County Junior College, William Carey, Pearl River Community College, and other colleges within the area.  We also now have an outdoors forum.

The My Hattiesburg council has been disbanded, and a new smaller advisory board elected to serve as representatives of the members and advise the administrator of My Hattiesburg.  You can find out about what’s going on with the advisory board and about new changes coming to My Hattiesburg in the MH Advisory Board forum.

The MH community is growing everyday, and we just passed the 2,000 member milestone a few weeks ago.   The My Hattiesburg MySpace page is also gaining popularity.  If you have a myspace account, please add us as your friend.  Thanks for all those that contribute to our community and make it what it is.  We continue to improve and appreciate any suggestions given to us.  You can contact us through our contact page if your having problems or need to contact the administration.  We also have a suggestion box forum for anyone that would like to make a suggestion that might improve our community.

IHL announced preferred candidate for Southern Miss

April 2, 2007 on 2:27 pm | In Information, News | No Comments

From the IHL web site:

The Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL) announced in a press conference today that Dr. Martha Saunders, chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, is the preferred candidate for the position of President of the University of Southern Mississippi. The announcement was made following a meeting of the Board of Trustees, Commissioner of Higher Education Dr. Thomas C. Meredith, representatives of the Southern Miss Search Advisory Committee, and search consultant, Dr. Jan Greenwood.

“Dr. Saunders is a visionary, with the experience needed to lead the University of Southern Mississippi now and into the future,” said Trustee Robin Robinson, chair of the Southern Miss Board Search Committee. “The Board and Search Advisory Committee were blessed with a tremendous applicant pool, and we are confidant that the search process has led us to the best candidate for president of Southern Miss.”

A short bio is as follows:

Dr. Martha Dunagin Saunders is Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, the first-ever woman to hold the position. During her tenure, she has brought the campus together with a widely inclusive strategic planning process; hosted a successful Higher Learning Commission re-accreditation review; and finalized plans for major building projects totaling $110 million, including a new University Center and a new building for the College of Business and Economics.

Prior to her appointment at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, she was vice president for academic affairs at Columbus State University in Columbus, Georgia, where she led an effort to create the Centers of Excellence to further the academic outreach of more than 30 private-public partnerships. She was on the leadership team for a successful $100 million capital campaign, led the campus strategic planning process, and developed several initiatives to increase student enrollment, recruit and retain outstanding faculty and staff, improve the first year experience, and strengthen preparation of teachers in mathematics and science.

Discussion is being held about Dr. Martha Dunagin Saunders over at the forums.

Hattiesburg Smoking Ban

November 24, 2006 on 1:18 pm | In Information, News | No Comments

Just to make sure this information gets out to everyone that might be affected by this. The city council has approved a smoking ban for the city limits of Hattiesburg. It will ban smoking inside all buildings accessible to the public or businesses with employees and within 15 feet of the main entrances to those buildings. This includes all bars/restaurants and will take effect on January 1st. There is a discussion on the smoking ban taking place on our forums.

Another important issue decided at this meeting was that 20-year veteran David Webster will be taking over as Hattiesburg fire chief on December 11th.
