Amazon sets sales record
December 28, 2004 on 12:26 pm | In Internet | No CommentsI thought this was pretty interesting. “Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) on Monday said sales of consumer electronics surpassed book sales for the first time and was its largest sales category over the Thanksgiving weekend, launching the online retailer’s busiest holiday selling season in 10 years.
The company also said it set a single-day sales record during the period with more than 2.8 million units, or 32 items per second, ordered across the globe.
Visitor traffic peaked at an estimated 700,000 users during a 60-minute period, according to Amazon.com’s Holiday Shoppers tracking program.
Its top-selling electronics products include Apple Computer Inc. (AAPL)’s iPod media player, DVD players and digital cameras, Amazon.com said.
The retailer added that customers bought more than 1 million items from its music category during each of two back-to-back weeks this month. Its jewelry and watch segment sold more than one watch per minute since Nov. 25. ”
Wow, no cashiers, no checkout lines, 32 items per second.

Merry Christmas
December 25, 2004 on 12:36 am | In Opinion | No CommentsIt’s Jesus’ birthday once again, some dispute when he was born, a few dispute whether he was the son of God, but almost none argue that he did live and walk on Earth. He’s the reason we celebrate Christmas, and the wise men giving him gifts are the reason for giving on Christmas. Have a great day celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ.

USM gets probation
December 11, 2004 on 2:14 pm | In Opinion | No CommentsAs if USM didn’t have enough problems, the University of Southern Mississippi had been placed on probation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. This is another example of the poor management that is taking place at USM. I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again, if USM was a business, it would be bankrupt. USM has been in the news a lot lately, mostly because of management decisions, or lack thereof. To quote one anonymous contributor in the Hattiesburg American, “Being placed on probation is an embarrassment to the university. It raises doubts in students’ minds about the worth of their degrees; it discourages prospective students from attending Southern Miss; and it calls into question the effectiveness of the university’s leaders.”
