Jaycees/Comcast Political Forum

I thought that this was important enough to have it’s own article. The Jaycees/Comcast political forum was held Tuesday night with six of the seven mayoral candidates debating about the issues in Hattiesburg. These debates will be aired on Comcast Channel 11 on the following dates:

April 5th 8:00 PM

April 13th 6:30 PM

April 19th 8:00 PM

April 27th 6:30 PM

Plenty of chances to watch it for yourself, and decide before voting. I’d like to personally thank the Jaycees and Comcast for putting this together. I don’t expect anyone to make up their mind just from watching a debate, but it helps to give everyone a more complete view of the candidates for Hattiesburg mayor.

Hattiesburg Mayor wants volunteers?

March 26, 2005 on 7:11 pm | In News, Opinion | 106 Comments

The growing police shortage, and high turnover is a problem in Hattiesburg. Johnny Dupree thinks he has the answer. A volunteer auxiliary police force that will pick up where the regular police officers can’t fill in.

“We will continue our focus on public safety with the addition of an auxiliary force of volunteers to conduct routine traffic control and event security duties which will be able to free the police for more critical functions,” DuPree said Thursday night in his annual State of the City address.

From what I read, these police officers will have to raise money for their own cars, weapons, and even clothes. They also will not get paid. I don’t know why anyone would want to do this first of all, and secondly, I don’t know who would want to put their lives in the hands of a part-time police officer. Firefighting is one thing, but the house never shoots back. Am I wrong on this or does this sound like the answer to our police force shortage? Anyone here want to do this?

Want a Hattiesburg Blog?

I can’t stay up-to-date on all the Hattiesburg news there is to offer, but we have a lot of people that come here every month for Hattiesburg news, probably because we rank in the top 5 on most major search engines for that term. We’re no.1 on MSN, no. 2 on Looksmart, and no. 9 on Search.com. Last month for instance, we had 1700 unique visitors, 70,000 hits, and we’re growing by an average of 150 new visitors a day.

I would like to offer anyone who visits this site their own blog. Basically, you would get a tab at the top of the page and chance to write about whatever you would like in your blog. The only major rule is, it has to be about Hattiesburg. Music, events, opinion, or whatever. You can voice your opinion to our visitors so they can read it.

If anyone is brave enough to take me up on my offer, just register at this site (bottom right corner), and I will contact you. Blogging is easy to do and you can have your own personal diary to write down your thoughts for the world to see. I challenge you to try it.
