My Hattiesburg
The Republican Roundup
April 5, 2005 on 10:01 pm | In Information, News, Opinion |The Comcast political forum was very informative and at some points, very entertaining. I’ll post a quick rundown of what I heard as each candidates number 1 issue (and none gave just one). Again, this is only the Republicans.
David Senne - Re-establish trust with USM, pay-as-you-go financing of city repairs, economic development, and school reform
Walt Coker - Police department reform, urban development reorganization, and street repair
Lee Jarrell Davis - Our relationship with USM (or lack thereof), economic development, city police problems, and he was the only one to mention Homeland Security
Betsy Rowell - Police department reform, and long-range planning
I thought the candidates started off kind of shaky, but most of them really impressed me with their poise and preparedness after their opening statements. I would have loved to have seen a open forum where the crowd can ask questions on the spot, but apparently, this country doesn’t do that anymore.
I’ve posted a poll over at our forums to give our members a chance to vote and to see who others are voting for.
MyHattiesburg Republican Primary Poll — I have 4 of the candidates websites posted there, and you can make comments there as well.
Also, over at our forums, a representative of WUSM let us know that they have the mayoral debates at Hattiesburg High School available for download.

Yea it must have been hard for her to read everything word for word from those papers she was shuffling around. That’s talent!!

When she speaks to us she reminds me of my English teacher. Good morning children. Take out your books and turn to chapter 9 where you will be learning how to vote for me. Gag! Puke! Gag!

lol, the only problem is, I always liked my English teacher.

I think Mayor Johnny DuPree has been superb during his four years as Mayor of Hattiesburg. Because of DuPree’s character and integrity, along with his fair and balanced views, he has transformed Hattiesburg for better. He has not just been interested in expansion on Highway 98 and beyond, but he has been instrumental in renovated parts of Hattiesburg that has been overlooked for years including Tuscan Avenue. He is truly concerned about every citizen and has illustrated that throughout his service to the community and the city. I look forward to four more years of Mayor DuPree and he definately has my vote for this upcoming election.
Sincerely,
Tametria Conner

well, a lot of people would disagree with you, but I think that’s everyone’s main complaint. The mayor plays favorites. Some really like him, the rest really hate him. How many on either side? We’ll see on June 7th.

Thank God for a Man of God!!! Mayor Johnny Dupree is fair and has been fair in every area of the City of Hattiesburg. Come on, just look at his track record and the record of the City. Check out the statistics and the improvements of the City. He is the Mayor for ALL PEOPLE of Hattiesburg. We the citizens of Hattiesburg should be thankful and very appreciative of the things that he and his administration has accomplished during the last four years. Let’s unite and support a MAN who is truly compassionate about what God has allowed him to do for this great ity.
Sincerely,
Peggy L. Scott,
Supporter

all i’m seeing out of dupree’s supportors is comments about “he is good”.
but everyone that doesnt support him is actually telling what he is doing wrong and specific things he is messing up at.
his negatives are really building up, in my own opinion. i really dont see how i would vote for him at this point at all.
he has banned this site at city hall (so they say). why ban it? why not come on here and state opinions that could help him? his first reaction to criticism is denial?
1. putting a stop to people coming here
2. not showing up at debates
come on. do something besides sit in the shadows and watch others tear you down.
this is not a mayor i am looking forward to seeing take office again.

If he were a man of God he wouldn’t be affiliated with criminals like Fairley. He also wouldn’t carry on extra-marital affairs which everyone in city hall knows he does. Nice try, but no dice!

I have one question in regards to the fairness issue with the new Mayor. I am not sure if any of you are aware of this but to work as an employee of the city of Hattiesburg, one has to live in the city of Hattiesburg. One of Johnny Dupree’s hand-picked employees does not live here. She uses an address in Hattiesburg but she lives in Hattiesburg. How do I know? Her son goes to Oak Grove Elementary. She actually lives in an apartment complex not in the city. Now this may be an apartment she shares with her husband but a friend who lives near her indicates that the man she is seeing is not her husband and has never seen her husband.
If Johnny Dupree is so much of a fair man, why does he have a woman working for him who does not live in the city but has a key job in his post? If Mayor Dupree is such a Christian man, why does he tolerate this adulteress? Love to hear back from you my fellow citizens
Comment by USMFANMAN — April 8, 2005 #
Well the whole adulteress thing is just hearsay. Once she is convicted of that, then we will see what he does. If you were in Dupree’s shoes, would you go by what your friend told you? That just doesn’t make to much sense.
Comment by usmdesigner — April 8, 2005 #
Point well taken usmdesigner. But I was not the one who brought his moral virtue into play. The bigger point is that he is violating city law by having someone in a position they are not legally able to hold. So is he exempt from following the law? Why does Alethea Shaw-Milton get special consideration? It just highlights his bias and one of many reasons he should be defeated
Comment by USMFANMAN — April 8, 2005 #
Yeah, I don’t really know about that law. Someone should look into it if that is the truth.
That’s like the ad I saw outside of Petal. Something about, “buy in petal to keep the money inside petal” or soemthing like that.
If she is living outside hattiesburg, that isn’t representing hattiesburg to well.
But then again, this isn’t a perfect world and things do happen. How long has she been living there? Maybe she is trying to get a place in hattiesburg? (I have no clue)

would like to hear any feedback

I don’t know about the online poll but the latest rep. state party poll is as follows:
Betsy Rowell - 34%
Walt Coker - 1%
David Senne - 3%
Lee Jarrell Davis - 52%
Undecided - 10%
In case you are wondering I have a friend who works there and told me the results over the phone, so I can’t say how close it is to reality. Just thought y’all might be interested.

Just wanted to comment on the forum itself, and the format used.
I was one of the organizers of the forum and am glad that you saw it as a benefit to the community. That was its sole purpose - to give the voters more information on the candidates so as to make an informed decision come election day.
The format we used was chosen based on experiences with other forums that Comcast has sponsored in other areas. Since the main goal was to broadcast the forums on TV, it was determined not to ask questions directly from the audience because of logistics with the number of cameras needed and their placement, microphone placement, getting the microphones to the question asker, etc.
By airing the forum on TV, this would give it a wider audience than by limiting the presentation strictly to the Saenger audience.
So it’s not that “this country doesn’t do that anymore” but the chosen format was due more to using the available resources (including money) as effectively as possible. Taking questions directly from the audience would probably have doubled the number of people required to put on the debate, and would have more than doubled the budget of the TV production and post production. Even though Comcast was a sponsor, a very large portion of the forum costs were borne by the Hattiesburg Jaycees.
But then again, all the questions asked were asked by residents and citizens of Hattiesburg. The first 6 questions were prepared by the Jaycees, and the final 2 were questions taken from audience members who filled out their questions before the debate began. The candidates were not given an advanced copy of the questions, so all their answers were on the spot. We would have liked to have asked a lot more questions than we did, but with 6 candidates and the amount of time we had, we were limited in that regard.
However, there will be another debate on May 24 between the final candidates. Those should be the winners of the Democatic, Republican, and Independent primary.
To give the Jaycees feedback, suggestions, or to donate money to the cause, please visit their website at http://www.hattiesburgjaycees.org.

And thanks for that info MSGOP
Comment by usmdesigner — April 10, 2005 #
The Comcast political forum mentioned in the first sentence of this topic.
Comment by wilebill — April 10, 2005 #
I’m to use to reading the last few post. Haha. Sorry.
Comment by usmdesigner — April 10, 2005 #
thanks for your comments wilebill. I do appreciate the Jaycees putting this together. If you remember, everyone was talking about the Presidential cnadidates taking approved questions from the audience during the Presidential debate. I thought this was the same case, because I thought I saw some of the candidates reading their answers off of a paper.

To answer the comment on employees who work for the city must live in the city. When I was hired as many others, I resisded outside of the ciyt limits and still do. The concept was if you live within 10 miles of the city limits you were approved to be hired. This is “bird miles” not actual road miles. There is a clause that the city will give special consideration to city residents. As an emergency responder, the 10 mile limit gives us an acceptable response time in the event of an emergency. I believe that the Mayor and council members need to reside in the city limits, but as for directors, if they can successfully do thier jobs and have an acceptable response time in the event of emergencies, they should have the latitude to reside where they want. The most qualified person to be a director may live on the outskirts of the city and may not be able to afford to move for possibly only 4 years. I know that there are many municipalities who’s police and fire chiefs live ajacent to the city and still serve with a greater convection than some who reside in thier respective cities. The main result should be that they are dedicated to the job, the citizens (customers) and the people who they supervise. Remember, if you are not happy with the current administartion, get out and vote.

“I thought this was the same case, because I thought I saw some of the candidates reading their answers off of a paper.”
If they were not the first to respond to the question, just about all the candidates took notes while the others talked, then referred to those notes when they gave their response.
We rotated who answered each question first so that everyone had an opportunity to go first, and also last. We tried to be as fair to everyone as possible.

Betsy is T-O-A-S-T!
Comment by AskBetsy — April 26, 2005 #
As a resident of Hattiesburg, I am glad that Betsy Rowell did not have the majority vote on June 8th. She is an extrememly shady character and all the while she was trying to dig in the Mayor’s closet looking for skeletons, she should have been looking in the floor-length mirror on the closet door. Did the mayor bring up the lawsuits against Betsy? Did he bring up the fact that Betsy was using City stationary for her own personal use so her conniving letters would appear more legit? The woman is a snake in the grass. I mean, c’mon. She blamed Lee Davis for her losing the election because he refused to back her. The mayor led his entire campaign without one negative ad or word about Betsy. That was very mature, showed he had the integrity Betsy lacked. She wanted so badly to win the election, when she couldn’t find any bad skeletons on Mr. Mayor Dupree, she had to attack his childhood friend, Rev. Fairly. This showed the degree of her desperation. She brought up allegations from 1995 or somewhere in there when Dupree was not the mayor nor Chief Lynn the chief of police. If she wants to blame anyone for Rev Fairley’s lack of charges she should look to the DEA or just get over it. All in all, the good guy actually won this time and without any gimmicks. Hooray for Mayor Johnny Dupree.
