  1. Not that it is anything new, but it always pains me to see so few people voting. The Republicans are going to have to get a lot more people out to vote or face another loss.

  2. CCS is exactly right! If the strategy of the negative campaigning was to completely turn people off from voting then it was successful. The Republican Party is so divided I really don’t see how they can beat Dupree with only 3 weeks left after the runoff.

  3. IT IS OBVIOUS WE AS VOTERS AND CITIZENS NEED TO GET TOGETHER AND FIGURE OUT IF WE REALLY WANT DUPREE FOR ANOTHER FOUR YEARS. BETSY HAS GOT TO DO A BETTER JOB THAN DUPREE!

  6. It’s amazing how Denard can get so many votes with her background. I heard that she was dis-barred from practicing law, fired from the NAACP, fired from the city she says she represents, has her council wages garnished for non-payment of bills, son is in jail for drugs. This is a leader of Hattiesburg. Please vote for an honest man, Eddie Holloway

  8. I CAN PROMISE YOU THAT HATTIESBURG WILL NOT BE ANY BETTER OFF IF BETSY ROWELL IS ELECTED!!!! I KNOW FOR A FACT THAT SHE IS BOUGHT, PAID FOR, OWNED AND CONTROLLED BY BOBBY CHAIN! HE WILL PULL HER STRINGS JUST AS FAIRLEY DOES DUPREES! HE HAS FUNDED HER ENTIRE CAMPAIGN! SHE HAS HIRED A MAN FROM WASHINGOTN,DC TO DIG UP DIRT ON HER OPPONENTS. THEREFORE, WE ARE ALL BLESSED WITH DIRTY, NEGATIVE POLITICAL ADS AND CAMPAIGNING. DIRTY CAMPAIGNING EQUALS DIRTY POLITICS IN OFFICE! PLEASE DO HATTIESBURG A FAVOR AND SEND HER PACKING….AS BAD AS I HATE TO SAY IT, HATTIESBURG WOULD HONESTLY BE BETTER OFF WTIH DUPREE AS MAYOR AGAIN! AND IF FOR SOME REASON BETSY DOES WIN THE RUNOFF…YOU WAIT AND SEE WHAT I TELL YOU…..THE NEGATIVE COMMERCIALS AGAINST MR DAVIS WILL PROBABLY BE NOTHING COMPARED TO WHAT SHE HAS IN STORE FOR MAYOR DUPREE! I WISH ONE OF HER OPPONENTS HAD TOLD ALL THE DIRT ON HER…AND THEY COULD START BY ASKING HER HUSBANDS EXWIFE AND CHILD THEIR OPINION OF HER CHARACTER AND MORALS!

  9. HFD4Ever, Every thing you say about denard is true but you forgot about her suspended drivers license for unpaid fines all over the state and how she accused a police officer in the city of h’burg of being a racist for writting her a ticket for driving with a suspended drivers license. She is typical of the current administration, low morals, poor leadership skills, dishonest, about herself, racist, not qualified, some thing for nothing, poor character.

eaglepride, that was me that brought that up but no one wants to hear me. these people dont realize that the real enemy is Fairley and he is the one to beat not each other. Mayor Fairley will go back in because we republicans cant get together, we argue and fight between ourselves and this will be reflected in the polls in the general election. It is not to late there is still a chance to get Fairley out of city hall but every body needs to wake up before it is to late.

i am a bit more optimistic about the general election. the general public understands what is at stake and will unite to usher the current administration out the door. i whole heartedly support rowell, but in the event that she does not win the run off, i would not miss the opportunity to pull the lever against johnny.

  12. Let me first say that crow has quite an unpleasant taste. This is Hattiesburg politics, though, and I should’ve known better than to predict the outcome of an election. My problem is I use too much reason with my analysis, and the Hattiesburg Republican “powers that be” are not reasonable people, in my humble opinion. And I’ll explain why I think that.

There are two more elections to go. VISITOR, plenty of people know about what you speak. The word is spreading.

From the numbers I saw (and understand that Dupree’s total will increase by hundreds, perhaps to 4,000+–and don’t forget, Dupree had no real competition so there will be more out voting June 2), Betsy has an almost impossible task to be elected. The total Republican votes were 4,450. Betsy has alienated all three Republican candidates (Everyone recognized Coker toward the end in remarks about Betsy), she viciously attacked LJD and alienated a vast majority, if not all, of his supporters, and I’m sure all of you read Mr. Senne’s comment that he would not endorse either Republican candidate, and that he had not yet decided whether to endorse Dupree. Doing the math, and assuming Betsy wins the nomination, lets say all of Senne’s supporters either vote for LJD or stay home. If only half of LJD supporters vote for Betsy, she’d be fortunate. So, Betsy has her 2100 + 700 of LJD supporters, add another 480 for half od Senne’s and Coker’s supporters and what do you have? 3,300 votes = a losing ticket. Let’s further assume that it is true that the Democrats sent voters to cross over and vote for Betsy, due to her alienation of MORE than half of the Republicans(At least 53% of the “Republicans”–probably more than that if there WERE crossovers–voted AGAINST Betsy)and thus, be the easier candidate to beat, then it is mathematically impossible for Betsy to win.

On the other side of the coin, LJD is the ONLY Republican candidate with a snowball’s chance to win. I believe that Betsy’s support (the hard-core “powers that be” and the votes they control–a very tight/loyal group who vote together for only Republicans EVERY time) would never “lower” themselves to vote for a Democrat, so Lee Jarrel would have Betsy’s 2100 + his 1300+, half of Senne’s and Cokers, and ya get close to 4,000.

    Anybody see it differently?

  13. elwood, I hope every one else is thinking like you at the end of this mud slinging contest. I know that I am very disapointed in these adults acting like children when there is so much at stake. I am a concrete republican and have first hand knowledge of how Mayor Fairley does business. I also know that he will have the buses running and feeding the people that he buses to the polls. He will make sure that every voter/convicted Felon that is in the forrest county jail has a ballet and the grave yard will even have its chance to vote. Fairley will be almost imposible to get out of city hall and betsy / davis are not helping matters. We need to unite and work together to rid the city of this disgraceful Administration if we dont Fairley will go right back in.

  19. It is amazing at how Denard Degado got so many votes. Maybe because she is a stand-up woman. Maybe because she does not take the crap that so many people in this city (including the ones on this blog) are full off. She was not disbarred. Can you prove you statements? if not stop make false accusations. Not fired from the NAACP. I am sick of people in this little small as redneck town of Hattiesburg spreading rumors. I know she was not fired from the city! Can you prove that? no. She won. Sit down some where and shut the **** up. The city will move on and be a much better place without Betsy and her divisive politics. If you can not prove the things that you say. Then why say them? So you can sit here and make the internet lame politicians spread more rumors. Her son is a good friend of mine. And you know what… he has never been pulled over by a black police officer in this great City of Hattiesburg. Only by Whites! Why you ask? I am sure you could come up with a just answer for that question. Its common sense. He is not in jail in fact he is one of the main reasons she was able to win. So if you have mixed feelings about the City Council Ward #2 position then just keep them to yourself. I bet you don’t stay in Ward #2! So shut the ++++up and get a life. Eddie will never when in that ward. I promise you that.

Well lil HFD4Ever she won! Despite the cheating.

    Get with it!

If Betsy wins she will have a very hard time setting Bobby Chain agenda.

What you are missing is the vast difference in Democratic votes vs. Republican votes. Assuming that ALL Republicans vote for Betsy at the general election if she wins in two weeks, where will she pick up an extra 1,700 to 2,000 votes? They aren’t there–period! Just what Fairley and Dupree hoped for.

    Comment by AskBetsy — May 6, 2005 #

  21. And, I might add, Betsy, not LJD alienated and pissed off so many people, she will NOT get ALL Republicans’ votes. Only LJD has the chance to get most if not all of the Republican votes, plus a number of conservative Democratic votes to make up the 1,700-2,000 extra votes needed.

Do the Math. If you don’t “buy it,” you need a math lesson. Like I said, It doesn’t matter to me, because Betsy can not win now, and our organization has successfully kept a criminal out of office. The new strategy now for you people who want to beat Dupree is to realize that LJD is you last and only hope.

  22. Dolemite, Delgado is a stand-up woman. She fought the Fairley crowd and won. If it can be done in the black community, it can be down in the entire City, but only if ALL Republicans line up behind LJD. Again, I have no preference between LJD and Dupree. I have no WORRY about Dupree beating Rowell by at least 1,700 votes.

    Comment by AskBetsy — May 6, 2005 #

  23. I am a staunch Republican and have NEVER voted democrat but IF Betsy wins the republican nomination, I will have no choice to vote democrat. We will be better off leaving dupree/Fairley in office! Betsy is dirty and corrupt and Hattiesburg will not be run by her but by Bobby Chain( and a few of his close friends/local business owners)who will tell her what to do and SHE WILL OWE IT TO HIM…Hell, he’s already telling her what to do! Just ask her first campaign manager who she had INSTRUCTIONS TO FIRE FOR REFUSING TO PLAY DIRTY AND START THE NEGATIVE CAMPAIGN ADS! That’s where Mr. Steve Dixon came into the pictre! If you’ll remember, her ads hit the airwaves first on B95! MONEY TALKS DOESN’T IT BETSY??? He bought you but I tell you what, He needs a very large refund b/c you’re not worth one damn cent!

    Comment by Visitor — May 6, 2005 #

  24. Let me be a little more clear…Betsy fired, my friend, Rick Bice (or dismissed his services may be a better way of stating that) because he refused to run a dirty campaign and the negative ads against Lee Jarrell. That’s when she was instructed to hire Steve Dixon, who was willing to run whatever, including checks and commercials to tv and radio stations, for the money that he’s being paid! And i might add…he delivered ads to B95 and WDAM for BETSY ROWELL AND HATTIESBURG FIRST! Kind of interesting dont you think? Considering that Betsy says that the two are in NO WAY CONNECTED (and you might need to speak Italian to understand that) but it’s really not that complicated!

Visitor AKA ProudRep, I realize you are fairly new in joining this site and still catching up on things, so maybe you should refer to the blog from 02/22/05 “Who will be the next mayor of Hattiesburg?” and read some of the city employees/police officers comments there. You have to be crazy to think we will be better off to leave Dupree/Fairley in office. Regardless of the things you accuse Betsy of doing, how is Dupree any better than her? He’s allowing Fairley to pull his strings! And Fairley is more crooked than Bobby Chain could ever want to be. You believe the city of Hattiesburg will be better off in another 1, 2, 3, 4 years with Dupree in office again? You’ve got another thing coming then. The crime rate is already at an all time high, and people do not feel safe anymore. There are crackwhores walking the streets in broad daylight, drug deals being made, more burglaries, armed robberies, etc.. And the funny thing is, a lot of these people are ones from Fairley’s church/family! Come on, let’s think about the best for Hattiesburg. Whoever runs against Dupree will be better than our current Administration. As I said, go back and read some of the comments from people who actually worked there. They know best what kind of Mayor/person Dupree is.

  27. yeah. . . i’m always suspect of those who start off with “i’m a staunch conservative, but i’m willing to vote for johnny because i so love ljd and so hate betsey rowell.” granted this is a paraphrase, but holy cow. let me echo the exhortation to read the section on “hattiesburg’s next mayor.” there is indeed some telling information there. this election is not about party politics. local level stuff is about protection (fire and police) and streets and water. if you willingly chose to vote for johnny over betsey or ljd at least you need to know what you’re voting for. i would highly encourage you to read the “hattiesburg’s next mayor” blog. quite an education there.

It is Fairley that is doing the mud slinging he paid to have Betsy take the fall I would vote for the first homeless person just to keep Fairley/Dupree out of office. As far as Deonard race her son was most likely carry a weapon and threats got that vote. The mayors wife is threatening all of the city’s vendors stating the city will not do business with them unless they support the mayor. The Rev calls this a witch hunt. If Dupree comes in everyone in Hattiesburg will be living and working in hell! If he comes in I will be the first to report illegal activities that the mayor has done. So get out and vote against Dupree and show him that he is not God!

  30. I’m so glad that most of the people on this site can see that BETSY ROWELL is a DIRTY POLITICIAN following the instruction of BOBBY CHAIN. Heck, maybe they are having an affair? Why elect someone that shows her true worthlessness before she is even elected? Betsy is a toy put out to damage or attempt to damage a certain group of people, and if that happens there will be trouble. Why put our city through that. I AGREE WITH VISITOR. We might as well keep Mayor DuPree in office, especially since he’s done such a great job!!! With a city that doesn’t mind openly degrading a church, just think wihat Betsy could help tham come up with. Visitor2 obviously has no home training.

on the subject of the voting numbers in the upcoming run-off and general elections. as micheal medved so aptly reminds us in his new book, right turns - the national elections of 1994 reflect a new era in voting which i believe even applies to local politics. a candidate who draws support from only 40 percent of the general public, but generates enough enthusiasm for an 80 percent turnout will beat a rival with much broader appeal - say, 60 percent - if the more popular candidate can only manage a 50 percent turnout. some of you folks running the numbers need to keep this in mind. and - keep in mind the broader goal of changing the current administration.

Fairley and you will get a job, but that is all you will get they are the racist people I know unless you are black or support them you will not be able to move up or transfer to a higher paying job like the handbook states. You get the job as long as you support Mayor Fairley. If you don’t beleive me on who runs the show at the city just watch who comes and goes at the city and see what happens next. I my self are a people watcher! I seen something at the city just a few days ago! Just go in ask questions if they seem dumb it is because they live with the Rev. and was just promised a job the Rev. is so hiped up on a black mayor because he is so racist that the only way he will be happy is if the whole city hall was black! He is the only one that is racist I think if you know the job and quailfied it doesn’t matter what color or sex you are! No one should fall on race or sex to receive a paycheck and if you do than you cant say that you earned it! I have had to work hard to get where I was but that doesnt matter to the Rev. you didnt earn it! I am for someone that recognizes good work when they see it and I know that the current administration is not one that sees it! They hire on the promises they made to get him elected the first time! I think that maybe they ought to recount the votes from 2001 they may have had the wrong card then Morgan could have won. He could have won! I am not racist but the current adminstration makes you want to be just because they bring it up that every one is. Who ever is elected to run against Dupree weather it be Davis or Rowell I still will vote Republican. Everyone needs to vote Republican because Dupree I mean Fairley is ready for the State Government since he stays in Jackson I wonder what for.ha!ha!

  40. I read in the Hattiesburg American that Mr. Davis will not support Betsy Rowell for mayor. I understand that he is disappointed about the outcome of the primary. But if he is true to his word that he said Mayor DuFairley is not the person to run the city, I wish he and Betsy would get together and work on improving Hattiesburg by getting Johnny out. As a city employee who is trying to stay below the Fairley/Dupree intimadation tactics ( I would like to keep my job) I feel that Betsy needs Lee Jarrel to supprot and offer his advice to her campaign. Hattiesburg is a great city and a good place to work. The problems that affect us is the lack of leadership (or vision) that we have endured for the past 4 years. More and more supervisior and directors have been hired or promoted over current employees that have been dedicated to the city and are more qualified. Most of the new hires and/or promotions have been based on race or who you know instead of being qualified to help the city. Please unit and vote for a change in City Hall so that the hardworking employees won’t have to be subjected to a hostile work environment of an uncertain future.

  41. I have been a resident of Hattiesburg for 29 years, and never have I seen such a fair and well run city! The administration is wonderful and just. The (true) citizens love the Mayor, his decisions, and his views. Why would Hattiesburg want to give all of that up for someone who is planning to fire and misuse almost all of the city workers. The fact that she is cruel and has bad intentions are not hid. Betsy Chain has no problem letting the community know her hatred of a certian group of people. I think that she feels that only a certain group of people can give order and command to their employees. What is the duty of a cheif? If he isn’t allowed to or disliked for giving orders than why is her there? This Chain woman is the scariest of all. She shows her reflection in the commercials that she has aired disrespecting each of her opponents. Where will this all lead her. Hopefully back to Forrest General or to USM so that she can earn her degree! Wake up Hattiesburg, let’s keep going what we already have going good for us, which is a honest, Christian Mayor that is well educated, fair, loyal and dedicated to the people of this city! LETS’S VOET FOR MAYOR JOHNNY DUPREE ON TUESDAY JUNE 7,2005!!!

I’m sick and tired of getting trashy bull sh– in my mailbox.I’ll be so glad when Johnny wins this election so Betsy can get herself a job and stop the bullsh– or move away form Hattiesburg if she thinks is that bad. With all the money Bobby is spending on her comercials she could have already hauled but and left the citizens of Hattiesburg alone. Never in the history of Hattiesburg has there been such a trashy campain. It’s good Betsy showed her hand before the game was over so that we would all know not to vote for her. 44. 4dupree.. ive lived here 55 years, was born and rasied here. went to camp school , hawkins jr. high, hattiesburg High, USM. i resent you thinking real citizens approve of dupree and fairley. we dont. they are nothing more than leaches at the public trough and have done nothing but divide our town, ruin a well run police force and chased off valuble police officers. the Agentant General at the Pentagon in washington has denounced wynn for punnishing officers who are in the National Gaurd defending your feedoms a violation of federal law. no bussiness wants to come here, the state development folks dont even put us on the list anymore because dupree has to have control over who gets the contracts and who the vendors are, and company’s dont what to get involve with that type deal. there is no NET team anymore(for all practicle purposes) so poor people have nothing between them and gangs which are on the uprise. and the contracts for roads and such are not even put out for bid. they are given to one company and we pay more then any other city for our streets. if you actually gave a damn about our town you would do some research and see whats goin on. i honestly beleive you would blindly follow dupree and fairley off a cliff, if they lead you there. you and people like you are destroying our town. and you have pissed a lot of people off with your tactics. i think you are in for a rude awaking. im goin to do all this true citizen can do to make it happen.

  45. First of all yes, I would rather follow them off a cliff than to have Betsy Rowell lead us as a city. Mabye she should take notes form Susan Vinent on how to run a clean campaign. I went to Grace Christian, Rowan, Hattiesburg High and graduated from USM and I do believe the citizens of Hattiesburg would be sick to the stomach to let someone as arrogant and self centered as Betsy. Speaking of facts, what facts has Betsy come up with. That Fairley bullsh– is old and poeple are tired of hearing it. I see people everyday that say they will not only vote but take at least five EXTRA people to the polls because of all of the negativity that Betsy and her people have presented. If she’s dirty now what makes you think she won’t be dirty once in office? As far as the police force, thank God police brutallity has gone down because finally we have a leader that cares about ALL of Hattiesburg not just the select group like the previous leaders. No business will come, what is Target? Maybe I was seeing things when I rode down 98 and saw a brand new shopping complex being built. No my man (or lady) Hattiesburg is sick of you! You have pissed off a lot of people with YOUR tactics, sending garbage in the mail, the people don’t appreciate that. Who ever sent that trash out is ruining Betsy’s chance of winning greatly. But thanks, like it was once said, “let them hang themselves” 4 MORE YEARS 4 MORE YEARS. I LOVE REV. FAIRLEY. GOD RULES!!!

  46. This election boils down to two type of individuals: those for progression and those for regression. Throughout this election I have witness the name calling, innuedos, and trickery of Betsy Rowell. I was so disappointed by it that I emailed her my grievences. Of course, she said she was disappointed in how negative things had gotten in the republican mayoral race, but lets be real. Regardless, if you support her or not, she has done nothing more than polarize this city. If you prescribe to her racial tone, which I’m sure some you do from reading some of the comments, then she is your ideal candidate. It is ashame that in the year of 2004 we still have psychos playing race cards for their political benefit. I hate haters and do not want to be affiliated with them nor do I want them running a highly diverse city like Hattiesburg. We don’t need another dope smuggling Bobby Chain who had Bud Holmes be the fall guy running the city. We all know that Betsy aint nothing but Bobby Chain’s B*^&%$. That’s why I, as the majority of citzens in Hattiesburg, will be casting my vote for Dupree. God bless.

  47. I am so happy to see that the queen “B” is being seen for what she is. I can personaly say that she is not a very nice human. She was once my babysitter and I hated her. She would pinch me on my arm whe she coud not handle a situation. Let’s not let her pinch Hattiesburg on the arm too.As much as I love this place I will move if that B@#$% becomes mayor of our great city. Go back to the sticks where you came from Betsy!!!!!!!
