My Hattiesburg
Four More Years
June 8, 2005 on 10:54 am | In News, Opinion |Johnny Dupree is returning as mayor of Hattiesburg. Unofficial results showed the mayor with 7,160 votes and Rowell with 4,678 votes. Over 52% percent of the voters in Hattiesburg turned out to vote in yesterday’s election. For a breakdown of the election results by precinct, click here.
The election is over and I think now it’s time to move on. Hopefully, the mayor got some good ideas from all the candidates that entered the race and will take them to the office today. I applaud his gracious victory speech last night, am now encouraging everyone to look forward to the next four years.

I hope everyone learned a valuable lesson from this mayoral race. That lesson is that positivity will always outweigh negativity. Thank you Mayor Dupree for running a good, positive campaign.

Since all issues brought to the atention of the citizens of hattiesburg during this elcetion were the TRUTH I do not understand why it is considered negative campaigning. If a candidate had a criminal record and this information was released the candidate may not like it but it would be fact not fiction. What is the difference? If it so absurdly false then where is the defimantion of character suit? I would certainly consider this if these types of allegations were made against myself fasley.
I cannot wait to see what Hatttiesburg looks like in 24 months from today. I think it is a very sad day in the history of the City of Hattiesburg. I hope the mayor takes a good look at the isssues that have been unveiled throughout this election. Mayor Dupree must work to “bridge the gap” among the citizens who were not suuportive of him.
Comment by Truthnotnegative — June 8, 2005 #
I thought Dupree said crime was down. On the news tonight, they admitted that home buglary and robberies were up sharply.

FIRST, I WOULD LIKE TO SAY “CONGRATULATIONS” TO MAYOR DUPREE FOR WINNING THE MAYORAL ELECTION THIS PAST TUESDAY. SEONDLY, I WOULD LIKE TO RECOGNIZE MRS. ROWELL FOR REPRESENTING A MINORITY GROUP IN THE WORLD,WOMEN. MRS. ROWELL’S DESIRE TO RUN FOR A POLITICAL POSITION HAS OPENED THE DOOR FOR MANY WOMEN IN OUR STATE AND FOR THAT, I THANK YOU MRS. ROWELL.
MAYOR DUPREE HAS DONE AN OUTSTANDING JOB IN LEADING OUR CITY AND I KNOW THAT HAVING HIM THE NEXT FOUR YEARS WILL ONLY ALLOW HATTIESBURG TO GO HIGHER. THE DIVERSITY OF HATTIESBURG IS WHAT ATTRACTED ME TO MOVE HERE. I HAVE KNOWN MAYOR DUPREE FOR FOUR YEARS NOW, AND I CAN HONESTLY SAY THAT BESIDES MY MAYOR IN THE CITY OF FLOWOOD, MS, MAYOR DUPREE IS THE BEST MAYOR IN THE STATE OF MS. HE HAS SUPPORTED USM, PARTICULARLY THE STUDENTS, BLACK, WHITE, ETC. HE DOESN’T SHOW FAVORTISM TO JUST ONE PARTICLAR GROUP. HE IS OPEN-MINDED AND A HIGHLY DEVOTED CHRISTIAN MAN. AND, WITH A CHRISTIAN MAYOR LEADING A CITY, THAT MAKES THE CITY PROSPER MORE AND MORE.
YES, THERE WERE MANY NEGATIVE THINGS DONE DURING THE CAMPAIGNING PERIOD (IN NUMEROUS AREAS) THAT WERE TOTALLY OUT OF ORDER AND EVEN MADE THE CITY LOOK BAD, BUT LET’S FACE IT “HUB CITY”, TODAY IS A BRAND NEW DAY! TUESDAY IS OVER AND GONE AND IT IS UP TO US TO MOVE ON AND SUPPORT THE MAN WHO GOD HAS PLACED TO CONTINUE TO LEAD OUR CITY.
**TO THE WRITER WHO WROTE IN EARLIER TRYING TO BASH MAYOR DUPREE AND HIS TEAM, PLEASE SPEND MORE TIME TRYING TO SPELL YOUR WORDS CORRECTLY INSTEAD OF TRYING TO MAKE OUR MAYOR LOOK BAD. NO ONE IS PERFECT EXCEPT GOD! THE PROBELM IS THAT THOSE WHO SPEND MORE TIME TRYING TO PUT MAYOR DUPREE DOWN ARE THE MAIN ONE’S WHO HAVE NO CLUE WHAT IS GOING ON. THE TRUTH IS NO ONE KNOWS WHAT REALLY GOES ON IF THAT PARTICULAR INDIVIDUAL IS NOT PRESENT TO ACTUALLY SEE WHAT HAS TAKEN PLACE. I AM ONLY 21 YEARS OLD AND I HAVE LEARNED SO MUCH IN MY SHORT LIFE. ONE THING THAT I WILL SHARE WITH YOU AND HOPEFULLY YOU WILL TAKE HEED TO IS THIS: “DON’T TAKE EVERYTHING THAT YOU HEAR TO BE TRUE!”
HATTIESBURG, WE ARE BLESSED TO HAVE A GREAT LEADER! SUPPORT HIM AND LET US CONTINUE TO GROW. MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALL!!!

21 years old… you don’t know anything yet.
Please turn off your caps lock. Unless you were yelling in your last message.
I personally like Dupree. I can’t stand Fairley.
Comment by flash — June 11, 2005 #
Can’t stand Fairley? Fairley wasn’t the one running for mayor, now was he? And that 21 year old USM student said a nice little speech if you ask me, full of good, old-fashioned advise we all could use. I think that it was and is and will continue to be a very good day in the city of Hattiesburg, for we have someone in office who is willing to hear ALL voices of the city not just a select few. I applaud Dupree for all that he has done for some of the communities in this city that had for years been neglected. Now some of the neighborhoods are getting some of the repairs they needed decades ago. And that (and so much more) is why people turned out in droves to keep this wonderful man in office.

TO THE WRITER ABOVE ME, THANKS FOR THE COMMENT!!! AND YES(WRITER AT 6/11/05, 17:38), HERE I GO WITH MY “ALL CAPS” AGAIN. I LIKE FOR PEOPLE TO HEAR ME CLEARLY, THAT’S WHY I YELL!!! YEAH, I AM 21 YEARS OF AGE, BUT YOU KNOW WHAT? I PROBABLY KNOW A LOT MORE THAN YOU THINK….PROBABLY MORE THAN YOU WILL EVER KNOW. THIS MESSAGE BOARD HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH PASTOR FAIRLEY, IT IS ABOUT OUR MAYOR, JOHNNY DUPREE. PLEASE STICK TO THE TOPIC AND AKNOWLEDGE THE GOOD OF THE CITY INSTEAD OF THE BAD. MAYBE YOU COULD FIX YOUR DIFFERENCES TOWARDS PASTOR FAIRLEY AND ATTEND ONE OF HIS SUNDAY SERVICES. I PROMISE, YOU WON’T LEAVE LIKE YOU CAME. WELL, SINCE I AM A CHRISTIAN AND WE ARE TO LOVE EVERY ONE, I WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT I LOVE YOU(EVEN THOUGH I DO NOT KNOW YOU…OR I PROBABLY DO) AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, GOD LOVES YOU TOO. FOR WHATEVER REASON(S) YOU DISLIKE PASTOR FAIRLEY, I PRAY THAT GOD WILL GIVE YOU STRENGTH TO LEAVE THE THINGS OF THE PAST BEHIND AND LEAN MORE TOWARDS A GLORIOUS AND RECONCILABLE FUTURE. MAY GOD BLESS YOU!
:)YOUR 21 YEAR OLD FRIEND:)

Where are all the polices (current and former) that were bashing Mayor Dupree and Chief Wynn just a few months ago? Why haven’t they left their jobs as promised? All talk and no action…I guess they realized they are replaceable. FOUR MORE YEARS….that a long time to be unhappy on the job.
Comment by VISITOR — June 13, 2005 #
I didn’t say 21 year old was stupid, just that with age comes knowledge.
I don’t consider Fairley a pastor. I consider him anything but. Since he preaches one thing and does another!
There are alot of good things with the city, but there are alot of bad things that need to change. The corruption in the city offices is one thing.
I hope Dupree does a good job. I am a businessman in town and my life depends on it. But the majority of my business comes from people living in Lamar County. And I am thinking of moving out that way. Not because of the color or the mayor or the politics in town. Property taxes are too high in Hattiesburg. We have a public school system that asks for the maximum tax they can get every year. They hired a superintendent at the highest salary in the state.

Why are all the HPD officers being moved? Sort of strange it happen AFTER the election! Also strange why, certain other things are being done….hush hush

Tisk, tisk, tisk,
So many allegations, and like ole Betsy, none has been proven. I don’t even see why Fairley keeps coming up, he’s not the mayor, he’s not on the City Council, I mean, what? If we were to all be fair and candid, we all really know why there are problems at HPD. But if the officers don’t want to do their jobs under a man, then it is best they move on because if you’re not going to perform up to par, and your heart is not in it, then it is best that you move on. We don’t need anyone half-butting around when it comes to protecting the people. So if their heart is not in it, Bye. See ya. Also people are talkinga about Fairley. Yes he’s a pastor, but he’s also a man and far from perfect, just like every other pastor in Hattiesburg. No one here can name me a pastor that is perfect especially if all you are going on is media hear-say. It is very sad when a person lets the media do all of their thinking for them. Very sad indeed. I am so glad to have a mind of my own and do my own thinking. In Betsy’s case, there was an exception. Every time she was on television or in the newspaper she made herself look bad, the media didn’t have to help her there. Also, no one has any proof of the so-called allegations on Fairley, just what ole Betsy told the media. Not to mention Fairley is NOT the mayor and if you don’t like the man, don’t join/visit his church! It’s as simple as that. And yes, the salary of the new school super is a bit on the high side, but we want what is best for our children. Mississippi as a whole is behind in terms of education and the the US is behind as a nation in terms of world education, so sometimes you have to pay more to get more. It was okay to spend 60 million dollars to upgrade ATHLETIC EQUIPMENT at USM, but not okay to pay a hefty salary to someone who going to benefit children. That is another thing wrong with our socity. We put entertainment ahead of our children. tisk, tisk, tisk.

Well Hattiesburburg High will never be the tower of excellence like it used to be.
Most of the really good teachers have left.
Most of the students there are just being babysit. They don’t really care to better themselves or go further in education.
You will see no more merit finalist.
My kids graduated from HHS two years ago. Thank goodness we are out. It is a circus over there. Without a ring leader.

@thereyougoagain,
You sound really bitter. I am also glad that your kids “got out”. As a parent with children in the Hattiesburg public Schools, we need parents that actually care about our kids and our kids teachers. How dare you imply that the teachers there don’t care about the children? If your kids left two years ago, then what do you know? Are you there everyday? Probably not. And how dare you open your mouth to speak on someone’s kids? How dare you put those kids down, “They don’t really care to better themselves or go further in education.” I’m sure there are quite a few parents who would be very upset if you were to say such to them. Rule of thumb, never speak negative about other people kids. That is not your place. If you see a problem within the school system then you become part of the solution. But not you. You’re putting down our kids and their schools and I for one am glad that you don’t have anything else to do with the schools. We don’t need people like you putting down our teachers and our children. I feel sorry for your children to have a parent like you. The schools belong to the community and when the community (or someone within the community) turn its back on the schools, then you get results such as people like yourself. Although I don’t have any children at HHS, I myself graduated from there and it was a beautiful experience for me. I’ve spoken to people who’ve just graduated from other high schools and have heard some wild, crazy tales. Every high school has its faults, but that does not justify a parent turning the back on the school and criticizing the school. If you can’t be a part of the solution, just bow out gracefully. And stop putting children down. That is so unbecoming of an adult.
Comment by juststoppingby — June 22, 2005 #
Well when you have kids in a school you see things different than a child.
My experience with the counselors; they should both be fired.
My experience with the adminstration; too many chiefs, not enough indians.
Merit finalist or semi; Hattiesburg High will no longer have any.
No discipline in the school system.
I am a taxpayer in Hattiesburg. My taxes go to an education system that needs more and more money, but produces less and less. If you own property, then you have a right to say what you want about a school system.
How can you support a system that allow no input from parents. Even input that would help the school.
It doesn’t sound like you are a parent. So unless you know what it really means to have to put up with incompetent teachers and administration, I think you ought to keep your mouth shut!
Really how many kids at HHS will go on to college? 10 percent?
Maybe more if they really cared about an education.

Hello,
This is for thereyougoagain. Just
had a brief comment and question–Please keep in mind I am not attacking you are anything–I am very respectful to others–were you talking about Mrs. Emily Thompson? I love Mrs. Thompson and she has helped me tremendously. I graduated in 2003 with Special Honors and I have a scholarship to my college of choice. I think it’s up to the students to make the best and to pursue the best of an education. Also, inspiring counselors–like Mrs. Thompson, Mrs. Blake, teachers like Mrs. Von Hersey, Mrs. Denise Sutton, Mrs. Nick, Mrs. Blackwell, Mrs. Bulter, Mr. Acker, and Mrs. Kirby, who were all there when I went from 2001-2003 help to push students who wanted to be pushed along. Students have to take the initiative is all I am saying and I am a living exmaple of what self-motivation, community and family driven motivation, and God can do for anyone. So if a student wants to be a Merit Scholar–he/she can if they desire and does what it takes to make that happen. Also I was wondering why you use a “code” name. I was just curious–I know a lot of people use them but I don’t understand why. I look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks,
Tametria

thereyougoagain,
I will assume you was addressing me. I don’t care what you think it does or does not sound like, I have kids in the HPS. Parent input? Maybe they just didn’t want to hear your input? If you have kids that has graduated high school then you are old enough to realize things will not go your way all of the time. And when that happens, you suck it up and deal with it. Now, the issues of the schools definitely should have parents’ input because the parents should know their children better than anyone else. As I said, maybe they just didn’t agree with your issues. And like I also said, you don’t go around putting people kids down just because you are bitter. I am glad the poster above came on and gave much deserved credit to some of the teachers and staff at HHS. This is what we need, not your negativity. It’s one thing to complain, but if that is all you’re going to do, than what is the use? And further more, since I know that you are older than me, I won’t go as far as to tell you to keep your mouth shut, as you told me, but I will tell you that that answer only makes it look as you have nothing more important to say. Also, because I am a factual person, do you have anything to back up your claim of 10% going on to college? To make such a claim you’d probably have to personally know at the very least 90% of the school’s population. And I’m sure you don’t. So stop insulting kids. That is ridiculous. Act the adult.
Comment by juststoppingby — June 23, 2005 #
And another thing, thereyougoagain, you are no position to judge anybody. So what if you saw a pregnant girl getting her diploma? What business is that of yours? Do you know her? Do you know her situation? Chances are you don’t anything at all about the girl. Just because someone brings a life into this world does not mean they don’t have THEIR priorities straight. Her priorities maybe different from yours. You can’t sit in judgement of anyone, simple because you don’t know. I once saw a woman at the Children’s Clinic bringing in her 4 boys for checkups. Everyone was wowed that she had 4 boys, but they were even more wowed when they found out she was in college on the President’s List. So, you can’t judge a book by it’s cover. I mean and really, a good person wouldn’t be in judgement anyway.
Comment by juststoppingby — June 23, 2005 #
I am not bitter.I am just stating facts from someone who has had kids in the HPS system from Kindergarden to Graduation.
Each year there are less and less merit semi finalist. I think they had one this year. HHS used to have about 10.
We encountered a teacher at Rowan that was horrible. He handed out take home sheets, read them to the class and then tested the kids. There was no teaching involved. I asked a friend of mine in the HHS system and was told that he wasn’t good enough to keep and wasn’t bad enough to fire. So they were stuck with him until he retired.
Mrs Hersey was a good teacher. But when my kid had her, she was in the middle of her illness. My kids had substitutes that were not able to teach the subject. So basically they lost a year.
This was also the same time they were getting substitutes from manpower. People that weren’t even in education to teach. It was awful.
The HPS system used to have strong teachers that could teach and motivate. They have all retired or gone to other school systems. I personally can think of 5 different teachers off the top of my head.
The HPS system is way top heavy in administration. Does HHS really need 5 assistant principles?
I just know from fact, when new industry is looking to come into this area, they do not look at HPS as a factor. They are looking at Oak Grove.
When Sacred Heart puts in their high school and with PCS , they are pulling most of the high achievers.
Now talking about young mothers. If in todays enviroment, you get pregnant, you must be crazy. With all the advances in science and you still end up pregnant, then there is no excuse.
But if you are having your 2nd baby by the time you graduate, well, your moral compass is off.
You cannot educate the unwilling.
But just by saying HPS is great, doesn’t make it so. I use to use that argument, when friends asked me why I was sending my kids to HHS. Great teachers and AP courses. Well not any more.

okay thereyougoagain, (hmmm, I don’t wonder why you chose this screen name, it’s very befitting) you see a problem in the school system. What is your next step? Are you actively involved in trying to change anything? As you said, you pay your taxes and you’re assuming that your tax dollars are going into the school system (like the government is giving you a blueprint on where your tax dollars are being spent) and you sound very….let’s just say “passionate” on the subject. If I were in your shoes, then I’d probably be working to bring some changes about instead of putting down my kids’ schools and teachers on the internet. Your arguments would be better served before the school board, the city council, write your congressman, something other than sitting at your computer putting down children. Just because you didn’t have a child in high school doesn’t mean that your moral compass can’t be off track either. Just the fact that you’re aggressively putting down children is enough for me to question your morals.
All in all, thereyougoagain, you made one or two good points. You should take it before the school board if you feel so strongly, but before you do that, you should learn to present your cases in a more constructive way. Also, by communicating with the board you’ll learn things you probably don’t know, and maybe they can explain to you why HHS needs five APs. Believe me, you’ll also probably find out that a lot of what is actually going on, they have little or no control over. One thing I pride myself on is being very open-minded and that allows me to see things a surface seer would probably overlook. I dig beneath the surface. I know that there is ususally more than meets the eye. That said, if you choose to only sit and complain instead of making sure your tax dollars (lol) are being spent properly, then you are part of the problem you’re complaining about.

You all need to really know your facts before your start talking, Mayor Dupree is the Mayor here, but he is backed by Fairley, I have heard Fairley speak at his church and he is a wolf in sheeps clothing, he will have to answer to God for his actions, not any of us, so we must just pray that God will intervene in this situation and take care of all the “bad” that is going on in Atlanta, Mississippi not Hburg Ms anymore. I am so sick of this city that I moved out but still work here but praise God I am able to leave this city and work in another city.
Comment by sick of this — June 24, 2005 #
I work at Hattiesburg Police Department. I am very curious that if Johnny Dupree is as good and equal minded as people say, then why is it that all the employees that come to work at HPD referred by city hall are all black. I think the City of Hattiesburg might get themselves into a reverse discrimination issue if they don’t get in line with Federal Guidelines. The other issue is the mayor’s police chief created a problem that is hurting the entire department. If you were the Ceo of any business where approximately 80 employees of 120 employees resigned or quit. If you owned that business wouldn’t you ever wonder whats going on? The mayor is allowing the police chief to waste numerous tax payer dollars in having to run more academys and pay to give new officers the expertise they need and city deserves. We are losing well trained people to other police agencies that pay less money. Why is that. We have officers volunteering to go to Iraq and go into combat to get away from the Police department. The few officers that are left are being extremely overworked due to a problem the police chief created. Just some food for thought. I know the criminal element is enjoying the lack of training at HPD.
