Microsoft has been working hard to help you in your fight to remove and keep viruses and malicious software from your computer. Microsoft Defender has been improved and is now in beta 2 status. I downloaded and tested both of these programs tonight and they seem very easy to use.

You may have to jump through a few hoops to validate your Windows installation, but after that, it should be smooth sailing using both programs. They download updates automatically, and can be ran in the background as you do other things.

Useful web sites

In an effort to get the blog started back up, I’m posting some web sites that you might be interested in. These sites may put a new spin on an old model, or be totally new in their creativeness and use of the internet, or be a link to free software. I hope they improve your experience or make your life a little easier.

Snap — A visual search-engine that basically not only returns you a list of sites for any given search, but also gives you a screenshot preview of the web sites.

WeatherMole — Get your local weather by clicking on a map of the U.S.

Skype — Got a friend in another state that is running up your phone bill? Skype is offering free internet phone calls till the end of the year.

Google Pack — Google’s free software list is growing by the month. Free photo-editing, desktop search, and lots of other internet software you shouldn’t be without. Get it all in one download with Google Pack.

Site is down

At this point, I still do not know what happened with the site. This is the only section I have been able to get back working at this time so I’m making a post just to update everyone on what is going on. I don’t know if we were hacked or if this is a server problem. I’m still working on it, but as you can tell, most of my efforts have failed with the exception of the blog section. Hopefully I will figure something out today.

I apologize for the news portion of the site being blank. I am working on that problem and hope to have it fixed by the end of the day. There were several new features added to our forums though. You can read about all the different options available by clicking the link below.

3.5 Forum Upgrades

One of the major additions is that now all forum members can have their own blog called a journal. Members can also post quizzes for other members to take. Thanks for continuing to visit, and we will continue to try to make this the best site in Hattiesburg.

Hurricane Wilma

The National Weather Center is now tracking Tropical Storm Wilma off the coast of Mexico heading north towards the Gulf Coast, likely Florida. We have a map of the current track at the link below.

I’ve put up a new map of Hattiesburg on the web site. It includes tabs that point out important locations in Hattiesburg to visitors, as well as, residents. If you’d like to suggest a new location, you can add it on our forums here.

Hurricane Rita

If you’d like to keep up with the track of Hurricane Rita, just click the link below. The picture will automatically update as soon as the National Weather service puts out an advisory (which is who everyone uses to get updates on the hurricane) This is now the 3rd strongest hurricane on record so all we can do is pray for all those in it’s path.

Site Updates

A few announcements about things going on here at My Hattiesburg. First, we encourage all members of our forum to take our Hurricane Katrina Local Impact survey. Our visitors can take this survey by simply registering in our forums. This survey is completely anonymous and all members of the forum can view the results.

Second, we have new pictures up of Hurricane Katrina’s impact on Hattiesburg in our magazine section. These pictures were sent in by various members of our site and show just a little of the incredible amount of damage that the storm did to the area.

Finally, I’ve added a Hattiesburg jobs page to the site. This is just to help all of those that might be moving to Hattiesburg or already in the city to find employment. It lists the top 3 employers in Hattiesburg, along with some online job sites that have several opportunities for job seekers available. Please let me know if you have any other online links of jobs found in the Hattiesburg area to add to this list.

On a side note, I’d like to thank noway and other members of our forum by helping people from all of the world locate loved ones during Hurricane Katrina. Many people wrote in thanking everyone involved for putting their mind at ease since they could not communicate with family or friends in Hattiesburg during and after the storm.

I’ve just completed a complete upgrade of our real estate system so that local agents can list homes for sale or apartments for rent in the Hattiesburg area.
