I have heard that same thing. Also heard that Applebees would build in Petal to, but I don't know about that.

I suspect there will be even more dining options in Petal once the Evelyn Gandy Parkway opens-- the city will be a nice stopping point for I-59 travelers.
Frankly, I'm surprised Petal doesn't have a McAlister's Deli. I think one would do quite well there.
(Maybe new restaurants in Petal will mean the lines to get into Hattiesburg restaurants on any given evening will get shorter. :-D)

While I do want a few more restaurants to choose from in Petal, I don't want it to turn into a big cluster.
I've always wondered why there wasn't a Waffle House in Petal. There's no 24-hour place to eat. Maybe with the Parkway opening one will come to the Friendly City.

I would be happy with a Taco Bell in Petal.

joe, i think someone previously said that the person who has the taco bell franchise in hattiesburg has it written in the contract that there would be no taco bell in petal while "she" ? was alive... (someone else here can tell u the full story, but i just remember them saying something about it in earlier threads). all i can say is that they are really missing out on a GOLD MINE by not putting one in petal. my 16 yr old son would probably have to get a job JUST to pay for all his trips to taco bell! :-D

even though i don't claim to know all of the reasons behind certain businesses coming or not coming to petal, i have heard that the main reason that petal doesn't have a "real" restaurant is because of the liquor license issue. most of your franchise restaurants serve alcohol, and since there are evidently reasons why liquor licenses haven't been issued in petal, i would imagine that is why they aren't building in petal.
anyone else have more specific info on this issue?

And... why hasn't anyone done this?

The Taco Bell issue has to do with territory and the franchisee in Hattiesburg having the territory in Petal, and choosing not to expand. With all the theives they have running the Taco Bell's in Hattiesburg, I'm suprised they're still open. It is one of the most mis managed opprotunities in Hattiesburg. They could make $5,000-$10,000 more a week if they'd smarten up and get some good management in there.
I think any fast mexican place in Petal would do VERY well. Just think 2 of the 3 sit down resturants are mexican.

Maybe Petal could get a Taco John's there. Never been to one but,im sure its just as good.Im so glad that Petal is and has gotten so many of the nice eating places there. I know they all must have hated having to cross the river each time just to get a good meal. all though Petal has some really good homegrown places to eat. I just love Mom and Dad,s.
Now it time for the good folks down at Brooklyn to get afew nice eating places. I know they must hate the drive up the hightway also.
Also Please don't let all the Great Big Chain Drug Stores that are moving into Petal right arcoss the street from one another ,cause any closure of all the wonderful family own store's there in Petal. That would be to Sad.

thanks, little.
ur post brought a question to mind. u talked about mom & dad's in petal. the last few times i've passed by there, it looks like it has been closed. any1 know if this is true, or if they are on "spring break", or what?:smt102
i have only eaten there once (before they were in the current building). i wasn't really impressed, but my dad LOVED eating there. my mom says that she likes Dan's Diner lunch specials better than Mom & Dad's.
IMO, for a hot plate lunch, Jerry's in the food court at cloverleaf mall is great! i LOVE their baked chicken, and their dressing and gravy!! yummmm.... :-D

In Cozumel, we had steak and lobster with tons of sides for about $15/person... just ask the taxi driver where the locals go for the stuff, and bam, cheap, good food.

I stayed in a little fishing village approx. 45 min from Cancun and 45 min ride across the water from Cozumel. We went into the village every night for supper and one night (towards the end of our stay - and we wished we had known about it sooner) we had steak, lobster, baked pot & salad $15 per person. Was very, very tasty.

Well at least 12 or so catfish/seafood places, a couple of Mexican/Texmex places, Mom and Pops ok...All they are saying Becca is that it would be good for the economy. Once the Parkway comes thru there should be alot more 24 hour traffic. Even a Waffle or Huddle House might be a good idea. Just a few rambling thoughts:smt119

I, for one, am VERY suprised at the success of Wendy's in catering to the late night hunger for Petal citizens. If you pass by there at 1am there's always a line. Of course, it doesn't help that it's slow, but there's always a car. The majority of Petal goes to bed at 9pm, but there are alot of people coming from Hattiesburg who are out and about. There's usually someone at the Texaco when I pass by there in the early morning hours.
I'm not sure about the success of a chain sit-down resturant, but I think it's worth a shot. There are times I go in Chili's in Hattiesburg and it's dead. If nothing else, it'll be nice to have an unseedy bar in Petal. I'm scared to drink in the places around here.

Wendy's is the only place in Petal to get something late at night, especially for people like my husband who has to work all night. He has a new love for chicken nuggets. haha
As far as Petal having enough restaurants, I do not think we do. Fast food yeah, but as someone else mentioned, the only places we have to sit down and eat are Mexican, Chinese, Pizza, and Seafood. Petal needs a sit down family type restaurant... maybe some blue plate specials - and no, Dandy Dan's doesn't qualify! :) I get tired of eating the same old things in Petal on the weekends, and we've just about given up on driving to Hattiesburg because of the traffic and the wait at restaurants.
So I say, bring the restaurants on to Petal! :smt038

Petal will have to loosen up those silly alcohol laws before restaurants really start going there en masse.
Petal government is too conservative to attract a lot of corporate business in today's world.
Edit: Petal will grow but only because of the growth of hattiesburg and its position as an alternative to oak grove. But it will not grow at nearly the pace that it could. This is all just personal opinion and conjecture of course.

We have 2 restaurants in Petal that serve alcohol already. My point was Petal just needs a sit-down restaurant with a menu of something other than mexican, chinese, or seafood. They don't have to serve alcohol. We just want VARIETY in eating choices.

If the getting is good enought, they will still come with or without a license to serve liqour. We have a Chilis, O'Charleys, and and Ruby Tuesday, amoung others (in Flowood) that can't serve liquour.

Petal has loosened up it's liquor laws. I'm not sure about the hard liquor, but you can now buy beer on sunday, and til 2am weekdays just like in Hattiesburg.

Moe's Southwest Grill (it's to Taco Bell what Quizno's is to Subway) could come in and clean up in Petal.
I'm betting that with the current state of Hattiesburg, the new Parkway will cause Petal to begin stealing business from Hattiesburg or companies that were considering Hattiesburg may choose Petal instead.

Yeah, I know but I don't like driving thru de hood to get there. Maybe when EGPW is finished I can take the long fast way around?
I hope when it is finished, there will be alot of people thinking just that...wont go through the hood or it's just too far. I'm hoping to get some economic development at "that town across the river". It's been doing good so far, but the parkway will certainly be a boost.

A little information would be in order. The new board of alderman amended the liquor ordinance (much to the dismay of many) to permit liquor sales on Sunday for the purpose of creating a level playing field for restaurants looking at coming to Petal.
Some chains indicated that they would not make the investment and take the risk without similar rules to competing establishments in Hattiesburg so we tried to accommodate.
We chose to differ from the Hattiesburg ordinance in that all liquor sales stop at midnight rather than 2:00AM. I personally surveyed 5 chain restaurant managers in Hattiesburg and to my surprise all favored the earlier cut off time as after midnight folks hang around but spend little. James Moore

yes they are coming. what is the big deal. i would rather eat at mom and dads.
The chain restaurants can stay where ever the hell they're at now, if you ask me. Chili's serves reheated frozen crap and over charges for it, and the same is true of Applebee's, O'Charlie's, and the rest of 'em.
I agree more places to eat in Petal would be nice, but I would much, MUCH rather see some independently owned places open up than a strip of crappy chain places.

I don't ride as much as I'd like. I get the commute in about once or twice a week. I'm just working so much... but if you saw me, and I'm not as big as you thought I might be, well, thanks!
I've lost a bit in the past few weeks, but that's just due to a diet of mostly sunflower seeds and coke zero.
I haven't had a drink in a few months. I've got a fridge with beer that's going bad (it goes bad, right?) and I just don't have the time to crack one open and enjoy.
All that being said, being able to enjoy alcohol is one of the pleasures of veganism, to me. It's one part of my former diet I don't have to change. I'm not sure of the merits of alcohol and hard biking. When I bike, I tend to run through my energy stores in about 50 minutes or so. I can catch a second wind after hitting that wall, but I can FEEL it in my muscles when I eat something and continue. There's something to be said about eating while biking to continue at a good pace.
You know, Chili's probably won't even have a bike rack. But if they do, I'm really going to ride down and get me a drink or so. It's just SO close to my home and so tempting to do it!!!
