why is it that we have the 10th ranked highschool team in the country but most of the time I cant even find their score in the H.A.

If this was any other local team the H.A. would be yelling it from the rooftops

HA has a few box scores of Petal and covered a few games this year.. The problem is HATTIESBURG HIGH & OAK GROVE will not play Petal so Petal plays teams out of the viewing area and the HA wil not cover them because the paper is not for sale in philadelphia. Now when the playoffs start look for alot of coverage of Petal in the Clarion ledger and the HA. I just hope this isn't like last season winning all these games against weaker compention and when the playoffs start we loose..

You can bet if it were OG, there'd be talk all over. But, in a way, Petal's EXPECTED to do well in baseball. We usually do.

If it were HHS, Fairley would make sure it was front page. I'm sure of it.

We usually do.The HA talks about Hattiesburg high and OG all the time, most of the times it's one of those teams on the 1st page then its off on like page 5 ohh yea Petal won again ( if you can find anything )..I mean look at all the press OG and HHS's football teams got this year. Now i know OG had on heck of a football team and deserve all the press they got but Petal's team was better that HHS and did not get half the storys and we had one heck of a come back story going on. Now we have one of the best baseball teams in the U.S.A. and you dont hear much of anything about them.

I bet you Corky Palmer, U. S. M. head baseball coach and his staff, are paying close attention. I'll have to start paying attention to what you mentioned.

Did they cover the grand opening of the new donut shop? Is it that good?

You could have found out this year by playing Petal. And I wouldn't be so sure Petal will be "booted up" to 5A. Our growth rate is slower than some of the other larger 4-A schools. More than likely we will stay in 4A.

Do the appropriate school personnel fax the scores in to the Hattiesburg American?

I know that the Baseball coaches fax in scores to the HA. I believe that the football coaches either fax or call it in, but I'm not 100% sure about that. The HA doesn't give great Petal sports coverage, but WDAM almost always puts the scores up during the Sports segment of the newscast. They (WDAM) also send a crew to just about every Petal Football games.

Mitchell Williams has always treated Petal well. And you are right, WDAM comes to almost every game - at home anyway. Anyone want to take a guess at how well Petal will do this football season, or should that be a new thread?

I think Petal will do well this season. I think OG and Hattiesburg will also do well, and it's a shame that we can't have more inner area play with OG, Hatt, and Petal... OG and Hatt will play, and that one will be a great game... I wish they'd hold that game at MM Roberts...

I think all local teams will do well. Petal, OG and Hattiesburg will have winning seasons but as much as I hate to say it OG has the best shot at winning state ( of the 3 ).

Earlier I posted that it was unlikely Petal would move up to 5A. I might need to retract that statement. Teachers at PHS were told today that our enrollment this year is up about 100 students over the end of last year. That's about 1,160 now, from 1,017 last year. Also, it is predicted that we will have about 1,200 to 1,300 within the next three years or so. With those numbers, Petal would be 5A and in the same conference with OG.

I think it takes a year or 2 before the MHSAA changes classifications. Even if PHS were to get over 1000 this year, they may not get re-classed for a couple more years.

There was a lot of controversy over one of the schools up north being classified as 3A or something and having over 1000 kids. But the school had grown so fast (and I think there was some consolidation) that the classification process didn't have time to catch up with it.

Even when (if) y'all do get 5A, that doesn't guarantee you'll be in the same conference as OG and/or Hattiesburg.

The next enrollment audit for the MHSAA will be this coming spring. So any changes will go into effect in the fall of 2007. When we were 5A a few years ago we were in the same conference as OG and Hattiesburg and it makes sense to put us back. There are not that many 5A schools in South Mississippi, so why not put those natural rivalries together? I would bet we would be in the same conference.
