Twenty-eight new residential subdivisions in various stages of construction in Petal and unincorporated areas of Forrest County rival the 30 subdivisions now under construction in Lamar County.

Families are flocking to formerly rural communities in Forrest County. And with 17 new subdivisions going up in Petal alone, Hattiesburg's bedroom community could become the new Oak Grove.

Powell's Edgemere subdivision, on Corinth Road near Mississippi 42, will bring 39 new homes to Petal. Housing prices will start around $150,000, and most homes will be between 1,500 and 1,900 square feet.

Pretty darn expensive for a 1500 to 1900 square foot house...

I have a 1350 square foot house I will take 70k (only problem inside the city of Hattiesburg)

Interesting article although nothing that I didn't already know. The only difference is the amount of press that Lamar County seems to get versus Forrest County.

Just reading about the new Life Style Mall at Chauvert Square in the HA
today. These life style malls are the big thing up here, my neice works
for a development company that is adding parks, recreation, and housing
to their high end mall. You'll never have to leave the mall. Where is
Chauvert Square ? Is there a landmark that I may know.

Smokey: for the lack of a better description it would be on the north end of n. 40th...facing Hwy 59...over by where the Front Porch Restaurant and Boral Brick are located. There is a big store that sells lighting and a vet office over there too. If you would turn right onto 40th going west (by Wards) and go straight that is where it is at. They just completed building and opened a Grand Theater over there too.

New Construction housing in petal, no matter what subdivision it's in, is running around this price per sq. ft. Average price a year ago when we were house hunting new construction was between 120-140K for 1500-1700 sq. ft. The subdivision dictated weather the price was on the higher end or not. New construction in the middle of established neighborhoods with older homes were still going for the same price.

Why does it seem like competition between the two counties? Am I missing something?

Very good question Gridiron Guy. There does seem to be a bit of competition between Petal and Oak Grove and it doesn't seem to be confined to the high school athletic fields. One thing that I think we all tend to forget is that positive growth in one part of our region benefits the whole whether it is Hattieburg, Petal, Oak Grove, Forrest or Lamar Counties.

This area will truly become the dominant economic region of the state when we can all manage to get over our territorialism and view our growth and economic development efforts from a regional perspective.

Dang Tully, I tried to give you some rep for that very good comment, but I have to spread some more around first. As soon as I get I chance I'll give it to you.

That is probably the most intelligent and insightful thing said on this board in a very long time.

I nominate you for mayor of whatever city you run for.
