I hate to say this, but I was wrong about Melvin Mack. When he was first elected mayor of Laurel, I thought he was going to have Laurel headed down the toilet, but he's doing the complete opposite. This guy is actually working for the benefit of all Laurel residents, not just a select few. Now he is attempting to beautify the city by getting rid of eye-sore properties. He's also trying to improve the local school district as well. I applaud Mayor Mack for his efforts. Hopefully Dupree will take a few pointers from him.

JB, I don't know too much about Laurel politics. What's you opinion on how the Laurel city council's relationship with Mack is?? And how does it compare to our Hattiesburg situation?

I think Mack has a more favorable council membership to go along with his agenda. DuPree appears to be far more professional and frankly intelligent than Mack, but if Mack is being more conciliatory than his counterpart in Hattiesburg, then he is compensating for that deficiency.

wow..I'm a little dumbfounded by this...DuPree more professional?!?! what?!!? yes..it's really professional to say that his team was re-elected and if he wants to wait until the last day of his term to submit his department heads, then that is OK.
Melvin Mack is a good man for the city of Laurel. He has served as a Jones County Supervisor. Heck, even when he won, Susan and Mack were very friendly...obviously no hard feelings.
If anything Hattiesburg officials need to look at Laurel officials for how to just get along with each other...

In terms of DuPree being professional, I was speaking in terms of speech and demeanor. If you didn't know DuPree and heard his State of the City Address or other major speech, most likely you'd be impressed. When I first hear Mack speak, I'm not that impressed.
DuPree has the intelligence and many other skills to be a great Mayor -- he just blows it by the people he surrounds himself with.

I howl in laughter every time I hear George W. Bush speak. I can't believe we as a nation elected him, but apparently not everyone is as shallow as I.

Well, when Mack was first elected, it was speculated that his tenure would be similar to that of Dupree. However, Mack has showed the naysayers that he can actually work with the city council of Laurel.

Apparently not. I like listening to Bush speak. He makes me laugh.

I actually "gave Melvin Mack some money" :-D last weekend. Specifically, I ate at the Country Fisherman and bought some grocery items at Kroger.
Laurel is a nice town. Many of you probably know this, but at one time Laurel had the highest per capita income in Mississippi, due in large part to the "oil money" there.
The Lauren Rogers Museum is a real treasure, too.

I went to Laurel last weekend and gave Melvin some of my money too. :-D Isn't it funny how now you give your money to mayors where it used to be you gave it to a company. :smt102
I'm not real crazy about Laurel myself. That one-hit wonder singer guy from Meridian (forget his name now, he should have had more hits) got it right when he called Laurel a "dirty stinking town, yeah". :smt119

I've been thinking about seeing if my organization would be willing to do some workshops in conjunction with the Lauren Rogers Museum. When we were there earlier in the semester, the guy in charge seemed to be enthusiastic about the possibility.

That's Masonite...Joe's family use to drive through Laurel when he was younger going to the coast and they associated Laurel with that smell. When he found out where I was from he asked if that was the town that smelled..:smt119
