1965 For (58.6%)
1386 Against (41.4%)

Sixty percent is required to pass. WDAM says there are affidavit votes left to count -- but usually there aren't very many of them. I'd estimate right now it is 130 votes short of passage.

Perhaps, my friend Joe Fortenberry should move to Laurel so they can pass a bond issue!

It's a shame that only that many people voted.

Looks like Petal is going to vote on a bond issue in August. Hope it passes. The Superintendent said it wouldn't raise taxes. I'm dumb on these matters, so I don't see how $9 million dollars isn't going to raise my taxes. I would still support it regardless. Petal schools need more room.

From WDAM:
Voters in Petal will be voting on a bond issue this summer.
The school board Tuesday night voted unanimously to hold a special election on a $9 million bond issue that would pay for the construction of a new kindergarten school and renovations and additions to existing buildings.
The referendum is scheduled for Aug. 26.

Blondie, I don't know the specifics of the Petal bond issue, but in some cases, the vote is to "roll over" the bond, which means instead of the bond expiring, you continue to pay it. No raise in taxes, but you don't get that money back either through the expiration of the bond.

Blondie, sometimes bond issue funds are used to restructure existing debts, at no additional cost to taxpayers.

Thanks for the clarification. I have blond moments sometimes! :) I wasn't quite sure how it was going to work but now I understand.

Perhaps Joe should move to Laurel.

Wait, are there any upper class areas in Jones county he can incorporate while he's at it? :)
