Cough cough...Lest I need to show you a map, neither Sunrise nor Sheeplo are in Petal. :-D

The Sheeplo area kinda gives me the creeps, I wouldn't be suprised to see strange stuff going on down there.

I am in no way surprised by the "news" that there are drugs in Petal (or the outskirts of Petal). There are so many people using drugs. From mothers using meth to "lose weight" to big-time addicts, drugs are everywhere. Didn't I hear a few years ago where Paul Harvey had said that Perry Co., MS was the meth capital of the world?

I became enlightened by my 12th grade daughter the other night. I was going to have a party for her and her friends since she is graduating, and I was surprised that she said she didn't want to invite many people because she doesn't have that many friends. When I asked her why, she said because they all do drugs and I don't. I was floored. These are kids that go to my church and that I have asked to baby-sit! These are kids that come from very good homes that I'm sure the parents have no idea (or I would hope they have no idea b/c the flip side would be they don't care). From meth, crack, coke, X, and the ever popular marijuana, she said they all do it. They come to school high. I was very surprised. They don't have lockers anymore.

I guess if there were a magical, easy answer, we wouldn't have people using drugs, but there has got to be something we can do. I have other kids who are in elementary, and I tell them all of the time don't do drugs. We talk about it now. While I don't think that's all it's going to take to keep them from using, I am trying to start early by talking to them.

One night when I heard a bang I asked my husband if it was a meth lab exploding. Yes, he thought I was crazy, but I swear, you just never know who's using and who's cooking. I have become paranoid about where my kids go and who they are with and who their parents are. I guess you can never be too sure.

Blondie, you're obviously an engaged parent and your high school senior is comfortable confiding in you. These days, we need more of your parenting style and success. :smt023

QM, I know what you mean. You want your kids to have lots of friends and enjoy school and not do drugs but not be considered a geek and be made fun of.

I would like to think that I would pick up on signs of drug use with my kids if they ever used. Drugs and sex just scare me to death. Parenting is hard.

If you want to be absolutely frightened to send your kids to shcool, talk to a middle school teacher. (6th-8th grades) I have a friend who teaches at a shcool not so far away who said they have 8th grade girls pushing guys into the bathrooms at school to have oral sex. The drugs are just as bad. It is starting younger and younger. Sometimes it makes home shcooling look like the only option.

Hmmmm. Well. Perhaps the worst thing that happened when I taught was when I found a novel that one of my more beloved seventh grade students used to detail all of her exploits. It was a rather odd and a bit sickening to read about anal sex and going down on random boys (none of it at school...although we did have several students suspended for attempting to engage in sex acts in the locker room during school dances)...all written in the margins and in the blank spaces at the end of chapters. Mixed in were random threats of violence against herself and a couple of teachers, including me.

I will never, never, never forget the conference with her parents and the look on her daddy's face as he read what she had written. When he started crying, she said it was all a joke, that none of it had happened. Up until that point it had been a lot of bravado on her part. He didn't believe her.

She was (is?) a good kid. 4.0, hard-working, involved in sports and her church. Very, very hurt and confused, though.

Dearest Sistah Blondie,

While RevranAL has heard all the stories of drug useage and mailicious behaviors goin' on at the Petal High School, Middle School and even W L Smith, from your desciptives of your hood ---do you live in Petal or Palmers Xing?
While the latter was merely precociousness on my part, (While RevranAL is currently out of town in New Orleans) RevranAL also STAYS in Petal, and did not know that it was that bad there...
As to your reference to Paul Harveys quote--I remember hearin' people say they heard that on his radio show some years back, but never was able to get any type of acknowledgement that Perry Co, MS was ever even mentioned by Mr. Harvey. That may be a topic for mythbusters to explore, as when I worked in L.A., Bakersfield and the Valley area of CA a couple of years ago, it was said among local folk there that Kern Co. CA was recognized as "the crystal meth capital of the world." Who Knows ??

And to Sistah Fuzzis, RevranAL's heart sincerely goes out to your cause. RevranAL has long since felt our teachers were way underpaid for the values and morals they are expected to instill in our children, while all along the constant threat of being blamed by some irresponsible parent for the shortcomings of their mis-behaved child. Let ol' RevranALs get a call from the school office that one of his chil-rens is a mis-behave'n at school. It won't be the teacher receivin' a parental tongue-lashin'. No Siree - it'll be lil REvranAL gettin' a lashin' with a limb on his backside, for all that foolishness of disturbin' others and actin' like a misfit...The downfall of our school systems was the removal of the Lord and the tree limb from the classroom....

In all seriousness, this is a terrible travesty to which is all too common, epecially among well brought up children. RevranAL is not sure whether it is peer pressures or the andrenalous rush that comes from being rebellious as a youth, which leads to these despicable acts...In our era, rebellious acts were smokin' a cigarette or tryin' to innocently sneak in a local nightclub underaged --Times certainly have changed..
Whatever the case, it is sad state of affairs that our children are being exposed or participating in such acts even in prominent area schools. This is surely not the FAULT of any teacher, faculty or administrative leader --but merely a reflection of how MORALESS and GODLESS our Society has become......

God Bless Us Everyone...
