It's a big honor, said band director Mike Garnand. After reviewing videotapes and a complete resume of the band's performance over the past four years, the parade committee announced that Petal's band would be one of only 10 chosen from outside California to play in the parade.
"We are the only band in the state of Mississippi that was chosen," said band parent Lisa Holmes. "Only 10 high school bands outside of California are getting to be part of this, and little Petal, Miss., is one of them."
But winning the spot wasn't the hard part, Garnand said. To make the California trip, Petal's band must raise about $170,000 - that's $1,145 for each band member.
As a former Petal Band member, I am proud of this group and the continued progress the band makes yearly. Anyone who's ever been in the band at Petal, or any other successful band program, knows how great a feeling it is to get something like this. The $$/member is a little high, but I know the community will pull together and make this happen for even the most undisciplined lower chair member. I'm seriously going to look into sponsoring the person who holds the chair position I had my senior year.
