This film adaptation of Jonathan Larson's Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning rock opera tells the story of one year in the life of a group of bohemians struggling in modern day East Village New York. The story centers around Mark (Anthony Rapp) and Roger (Adam Pascal), two roommates. While a former tragedy has made Roger numb to life, Mark tries to capture it through his attempts to make a film. In the year that follows, the group deals with love, loss, AIDS, and modern day life in one truly powerful story. Rosario Dawson, Jesse L. Martin, Idina Menzel, Wilson Jermaine Heredia, Tracie Thoms, and Taye Diggs also star.
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie after watching it...I was very hesitant at first because I thought I would not like this type of musical. Now it's one of my favorites! Two Thumbs up!! :smt038

I couldn't get past the second song... when people start singing where they could just simply speak the words, I tend to tune out...

thats the whole point of it being a musical CB...at least they do actually talk in this one...and the second song is like five minutes into the movie! but hey if its not your cup of tea...its not your cup of tea.

I can get into some musicals, but this one started out wrong to me. It was TOO much song in the beginning. Perhaps they talk more later, but they were singing the dialouge, and that's a little too much for me. I'm used to muscials where the song is describing a situation or dialouge that just happened, not musicals where the song IS the dialouge. Maybe it changes later, like I said, but my wife and I just turned it off after they stated the second or third song.

The biggest difference between Rent and another musical, say, Grease, is that Rent is technically an opera. Granted, it's a rock opera (along the style of Jesus Christ Superstar), but it is an opera. The show itself is based upon the opera La Boheme.
I haven't seen the movie, but the stage version is great.

watched it with the wife, not gonna lie....its a little weird.
not happy at all like the previews suggested. its about struggling actors living with aids....some of the music was great, and they can all flat out carry a note.

Coming in late here, but I just found the forum so...
This is one of my all time favorite movies. I love musicals, and I was so hooked on this one from the very beginning. The music is wonderful..the acting is great... (I do have a problem with the unbelievable ending, but I'm able to forgive considering everything else).
Anthony Rapp as Mark is SO GREAT.
Ok.. I'm gushing...
One day, I WILL see the play..I just MUST.
