What's the deal with these new cans? I know I've missed meeting at the city, but I'm a little confused. I look out my window, and what do I see? A big green garbage can. Maybe there's instructions in the lid...
I think they say 'Open Lid, Deposit Trash'.

I've recieved no notice about the cans. Outside the city limits, enviro used these type cans and wouldn't accept any garbage that wasn't inside the can. I'm wondering if the same rules are going to apply, etc.
Did professor fuzzis help you with that lid question, or did you figure it out on your own? You might want to check with her just to make sure it's correct.

i seem to recall something in either the HA or Petal News about the garbage cans. i don't know about the "instructions" though. i think they said that every1 would get 1 free, but could purchase more if they want. also, if something happens to ur city-owned can, u have to pay for it! :smt119 i'm sure they aren't from the $ store either.
we haven't gotten ours yet. i'm sure we'll be getting our "instructions" soon!

According to Councilman James Moore the city took over garbage pick-up. The company they had been using asked to be released from their contract, apparently last fall sometimes after Katrina. According to what he said the city thought they could do a better job of garbage collection and cheaper than the company they were using. Apparently the truck they use for collection is one of the new ones that has "arms" that pick the can up then dump it in the trash truck. The truck driver operates the apparatus that picks the can up, dumps it and then places it back on the ground. No second or third person to have to grab up the cans...it is all mechanical.

OOPS! Sorry, but I think I may have been given some wrong info. IF you want to know what's up with the garbage in Petal, go to the HA site and check out their forum section..James Moore explains what is going on.

Just got our new garbage cans the other day and they are nice and big. You could dump a body in that thing.

Long story short on the new cans;
Enviro did serve the newly annexed area using similar big cans and did load them using only a driver and a mechanized arm. Enviro asked to be released from the contract and we agreed.
Those residents made it clear that they liked the large cans that hold about three typical cans of garbage and roll easily. They also liked the consistent look of the neighborhood as the cans await pickup. At their request, when we took over collection we provided similar size cans.
Our cans are different in that they can be loaded with the assist of a mechanical lift but need a man to hook the can to the lift. Since our cans are rear loaded, we can cover both sides of the street with one pass. the Enviro method could only service one side of the street per pass.
Once we delivered the first batch of cans residents in other parts of the city expressed interest and we agreed to supply all residents with matching cans. The larger can capacity will also allow us to soon go to once per week pickup.
At this time we will pick up additional garbage other than that in the green can if it is placed with the new can. If you wish to dispose of your old can, just place it inside the new can as you fill the new can. James Moore

I like the new cans, however, I have concerns with "once a week pick-up." Our 3 trash cans are typically packed or over-flowing if we miss one of the regular pick-up days. Is it possible to have an additional can delivered?:smt102

A second can is available for an additional $6.50 per month added to your garbage bill. Call the water department for a second can. James Moore

Mr. Moore
How come you all didn't just raise the rates for sewer, water, etc on the new influx of people that are moving into petal.
no one needs a 30% increase in their budget to cover an upgrade in services especially since the upgrade is necessary because of all the new people? Or why didn't you all get those developers to pay it?

Selmore,
Much of the work to be done sewer and water related is also in the oldest parts of the city, not just the newer annexed areas. Many of the existing lift stations have not had a functioning backup pump for years and the water leaks we've been chasing are exclusively in the older part of Petal as the new area is served by Barrontown or Sunrise water systems.
Developers do build 100% of the water and sewer infrastructure in a new development and it must meet our standards before we will accept responsibility for the new streets. James Moore

...and I'm sure the developers would not mind paying more for the privilege and if they don't want to pay more, let em build in Sumrall, Purvis, or OG. With that extra cash you all could generate, you could repair the older parts of Petal.
Too late, and probably too logical, but the old peeps would really, really, welcome the new development knowing that they were getting new stuff from it.
If I understand you correctly, Developers are "infrastructure neutral." Raise their fees a grand per house, they wont miss it cause the new buyers will pay it.
Thanks for your response, your our best bureaucrat. lol :)

Some Mississippi communities had instituted a practice of charging developers "more" than the actual cost of the systems within the new development using the argument that their new system placed more load on the overall utility system.
These extra charges were called impact fees and recently ruled unconstitutional by the state supreme court. James Moore

When does the 1 pickup per week start?
The once per week pick up for Petal starts January 2, 2006.
Before annexation, Enviro picked up my family's garbage once per week. In fact, once per week garbage pick up is all I can remember having for the past 10 years. We never had a problem with the week's quantity fitting into the large can.
Unlike my experience with Enviro, Petal will pick up additional garbage if properly contained and placed with the new can. James Moore

Well I have 3-4 kids at my house and we can fill up a garbage can in a hurry. We'll see how it works. Trying to be positive about it.
I know I'm asking a lot of questions, but currently my pick-up is Tues and Fri. How will I know which day is the day. Will we receive a notice? TIA for all of your information. It is very helpful.

I don't know if the schedule has been determined as of yet but as time nears a call to city hall (601-545-1776) should get a definitive answer.
I'll try to remember to suggest a press release and possibly our website will be up by then. James Moore
