Do you walk/bike the longleaf trace
if you do would you use the Petal walk/bike trail when/if it is open?

I like to bike the trace, me and a friend have made it from Hattiesburg to Sumrall and back ( 30 miles )
I just wanted to know of anyone besides me would use the Petal trail.

I didn't know you could run that far. I'll have to step it up.

I'd be interested in the Petal version.

Last summer I made four or five roundtrip outings on the Trace (82 miles), but I haven't ridden as much this year. I'm working back up to it, though, and I'd say in a couple of weeks I'll be ready to do it again. I don't live in Petal, but I'll go wherever the Trace takes me.

I don't, but I would like to when I put together the time and motivation.

I think I would like to ride the trace and from what I understand they are trying to link the trace to the petal bike path. I would use it and probably will. My children are too small right now to enjoy it, and I don't have alot of friends that are "bikers"

The trace is a nice view and ride...but I would suggest starting at Jackson Rd and riding towards Sumrall. The section between USM and I59 is kinda questionable especially at the underpass of 7th street. Here lately theres been alot of thugs hanging out near there. So be careful.

There have been several break-ins at the Jackson Rd station so I don't know if I'd feel great about leaving my vehicle there...regardless of the thugs at the under/overpass. And I have to say on my last three rides, there has been either a USM police vehicle or a Lamar County Sheriff's deputy driving the Trace...so hopefully whatever is going on is getting nipped in the bud. Unlike with Hattiesburg.

Lamar Co SO Along with HPD arrested the guy responsible for the breakins on the long leaf trace.. They had 3 or 4 cars yesterday broken into. He was cracked out and got caught..

I would not bike alone on the trace its not a crime issue its a "what if "issue.
If your 15 miles out and get hurt you it would take a while b/f someone finds you

when I do ride alone I just make laps between USM and Jackson Rd. ( 8 mile round trip )

fuzzis I’ve been thinking of trying to do a round trip ( or more likely a one way from Prientis to Hattiesburg ) how long did it take you and what kinda bike did you ride? I ride a mountain bike with road tires.

I'm slow, and I ride a hybrid moutain-road, so I'm not going to be getting up to some top speeds (I'm doing good to average 15-16 mph). I want to say that out and back (all 82 miles), along with a few stops to refill water and to snack, took me maybe 5 hours or so? I'd head out around 6 on a Sunday morning and be back in time to grab some lunch.

I have to say that our Trace is a jewel. Last summer I decided to head over to LA to ride the Tammany Trace, expecting it to be like ours, with water/rest stations, and I was shocked to find that it wasn't. I went 16 miles without a water station (I had a camelback...thought there would be water at the end of the trace and there wasn't) and was in some serious trouble when I pulled into Fontainebleau State Park. While there was some lovely scenery and the path was good, I don't know that I'll ever go back there again.

I saw in todays HA that the thug breaking into cars on the Trace was caught either yesterday or today....the kicker was the case was solved by Lamar Co. detectives Jamie Murry, Marc Ogden and Richard Cox...all former HPD officers of course! I would like to frame the article and send it to the mayor! Good one guys! Thanks for your continued dedication to the area citizens.

Doesn't the majority of the Trace go through Lamar county? I know that's not the point, but...

Its seems like more people on this forum use the trace than I thought. When the weather cools down a little we should get together and ride at least to Epley station and back or something.

That would be fun. Instead of a myhattiesburg.com lunch, we could do a ride. Let me know and I'm there.

Last week I did a couple of 30 mile trips, but I won't get a chance to ride this week.

it would be wonderful if i started riding a bike, or doing ANY other form of exercise! i have to be honest and say that i have had no interest in riding on the trace, but after reading posts here and thinking about the possibility of there being a biking trail here in petal, i really would consider it. i would have to buy a bike first, though ... :-D

i, too, think it would be great if we could get a group from MH together from time-to-time for a short excursion... of course, we might need to break it into "groups" -- the "speed demons", the "see the sights as u go", and the "not up to speed, but trying" groups! what'cha think? :smt102

I hope to use the trails in Petal. Right now I do not use the trail. I know a lot of people do, though.

I highly doubt that. Maybe on the way back. For some reason, when I'm pedaling to the car, I consistently keep things fast.

I try to get out no later than 6:00 in the morning so it's still cool when I'm riding. A good friend got me a new camelback for Christmas, and it helps quit a bit.

I run on the Trace whenever I can, which is not that often since I live in south Lamar county. It is a 12 mile drive each way, but worth it once in a while. It's a good place to go if you want to run/walk/bike with kids - no traffic issues.

I use the trace alot, but not as much as i used to. This is just because lack of time though, not the potential car break ins. I usually ride from jackson road station towards prentiss, although i do occasionally like to go to USM.

I'm preety interested to see how many folks will actually use the downtown extension. I just can't see that being a very popular locale, because of the perception people have of that area. I'm not scared of it myself nor have i ever felt unsafe down there, but like i said thats just me
