The bill bord on 42 by-pass close to the fire station, I first noticed them the other day.
They appear to have the face and name of convected sex offenders on them. I think it’s a grate idea. I just wanted to know who is doing this and give them a grate big :thumbs_up

I would like to ask why spend money keeping their face on a billboard when they could be behind the bars of a prison cell.

I think ... maybe ... these jerks have been convicted, did their time and released ... and the billboards are a way of letting communities know they are in the area??? Some people are so closed minded to the thought of someone like that being in our neighborhood (The whole ... "Not on MY block ...") ... until they are forced to face it everyday ... It's not like they'll go and check out the Sex Offenders Registry or anything ...

If the offense was made against my kids ... they'd never make it to the jail ... :)

Slightly off topic, but I've noticed a lot of parents with their child's name, sports team, position, & number plastered accross the windows of their automobiles. I understand being proud of your kids & all, but I think this might be a little too much info to be just handing out to would be child molesters.
Even putting their named on their clothes is putting them at risk, and even though the risk is very small (we hope) even a small risk of that type seems too much to me.

cant live life in total fear man
that said...those sports stickers in the back of whoevers car is just stupid...its the evolution of the 'my kid made the honor roll' type thing...except their kid probably didnt make the honor roll...but he plays soccer which is much more important...hence the size of the sticker
back to the topic:
im honestly torn between the child molestor who has served his debt to society's right to privacy and the parents and community members right to know about a convicted felon who has a very high likelihood of recommitting the same crime...law and order calls this recitivism...dont know if thats the actual word
but then again...there are some who ginuinely will not do that sort of thing again and probably shouldnt have to live with a scarlet letter around their neck...the question is...is it worth the risk?
that kind of stuff should probably be limited to hardcore rape and child molestation...and not so much the 19 year old kid who has a 16/17 year old girlfriend and got convicted.
I am kind of with TheDoc here...forgiveness is a grand thing...but you should make your peace with God if you messed with anybody i knew and loved. Almost everyone deserves a second chance.

I can kind of see your point, King, but when I look at the sex offender website, I look at the age they were when convicted and what type of sex crime they committed. I wouldn't have a problem living next to a guy who was convicted of statutory rape at the age of 20, but would have a problem with a guy who was 40 when he was convicted of touching a child for lustful purposes. I think most people can make that distiction.
I think most people can see the difference in consensual sex between someon who's 15 and 40 vs. a sexual encounter with someone who's 10 and 40. They're both illegal, but one is a little different than the other, IMO.

I don't think they are from our area, I have seen the exact same bill boards on the coast and in Jackson with the exact same pictures.

I commented about that to my wife, how I felt it was a waste of resources to put up the same guys everywhere, when, only a smaller amount of people need the information. I'd be afraid of mistaken identity, as some of those guys look like people I know who are perfectly normal.

I agree with c-belt ... that is a waste of money ... not to mention ... especially if these guys aren't from around here ... a bit illeffective ... Talk about redundant ...

Those billboards are put up by the state, and feature convicted felons who are currently serving time. As for age differential, the billboards give the age of the victims; I haven't seen any where the victim was older than 13 at the time of the crime.

It's a good thing none the less ... But that does make a difference.

I strongly believe in forgiveness. But I also know that if anyone ever does anything to rob my girls of their smiles, then I'll need some forgiveness for myself...and a good lawyer.
Having a young daugher myself, I feel the same way. I'd be reaching to the tire tool, my profession aside.
Frank Melton did the same thing with drug dealers on billboards a number of years back. Once he had one of the "subjects" lawyers call and threaten to sue for slander or whatever. Melton then responded that he'd leave the picture up and then put his lawyer's picture up beside the thug and say "and this is the lawyer who got him off". :smt118

aaron: if i'm not mistaken, look closely at the bill board and it tells u how much time the person is serving or it could be how much time the person has served, mainly because i remember thinking "why waste money on the ones that are already locked up when they need to put the pictures of the ones that are still on the street up there so people would know who to look out for. But like i said i just may be mistaken about that.

I did this ... it lists 42 nationally registered offenders in the 39401 zip code ... Sent chills knowing where some of these folks reside ... :smt119

I looked at my hometown in NE and there were 14 in a town of under 10,000!!! Yipes - then I searched all the zip codes where I lived as an adult -- there were none in a town of 60,000. The second area is 40 miles from the first - guess they like rural areas.

Thanks JoeLaw... kind of scary to see how many are on this list and how many are missing in terms of the legal system losing track of them...
