The "8-ton" doesn't refer to the weight of the unit; has to do with a/c system capacity.

man the police cant be everywhere all the time...even if they were running at full strength...plus my money says the AC unit was behind the building...so the police need to not only patrol the streets but look behind?

I'm not a cop or a thief but I believe the preferred way to steal something would be from the back alley instead of main street entrance. So unless things have really gone to hell in a hand basket, YES the POLICE need to patrol both the streets as well as the back side of buildings. Just a suggestion.:smt102

An 8 ton outside a/c unit probably weighs in at around 400lbs. Two men could cut the lines with a set of bolt cutters and be gone in about 10 seconds. If there was active power to the unit, a bit more care was probably taken and it may have been 30 seconds. The weight of the unit is strictly in the compressor and the fan motor. The rest is just hollow tubes and aluminum.

It doesn't really work by itself, though. Maybe they needed the parts...
