View Full Version : 'Fairley' Tired of It

A letter to the editor in today's Hattiesburg American expresses the feelings of a lot of citizens in our city. Is it not possible to find anyone in the Black community willing to talk about what's going on in Hattiesburg OTHER than Ken Fairley? Or does every Black citizen defer to the good reverend to speak for them?
This is really the fault of the HA. It's either laziness on their parts in not looking for others to interview OR there's a reason we're not privy to that causes them to go back over and over and over again to the same person. This letter certainly nails it as far as I'm concerned.
Fairley exposure getting tiresome
Just a question ... would it be too much to ask of the American that you guys find someone else, anyone else to talk to in the black community other than Ken Fairley? It's getting old. Cathy Creel

Short and to the point. I like it. :smt038
Now, will the HA accept this "challenge" and seek comments from others in the black community?
politically incorrect

They will probably be glad to speak with anyone in the black community Rev. Fairley suggests.
This reminds me of many years ago in Laurel when Thaddeus Edmonson (since disgraced ex-council member) published his own newspaper to speak for the black community in Laurel. Each issue had quotes from people such as his wife, Mary Edmonson, his brothers, cousins, nephews, etc. Almost everyone mentioned had the last name Edmonson.
I would like to know who goes around annointing leaders in the black community - both locally and nationally. Why is Jesse Jackson considered a "leader" when he has never held public office and has been exposed again and again as a shake-down artist? The same goes for Fairley. They are only "leaders" because the media gives them a microphone. Take it away and let someone else rise up to speak for a change.
I think the darker race is afraid to say ANYTHING about the rev. It's like he will put a voo-doo curse on them or something. How sad to be oppressed by your own race-it ain't whitey!

check the forums on HA..one of the editiors addresses the question of why the HA continues to interview and report from the rev. Be fore-warned..it sounds like a bunch of bullsh** to me and will probably sound the same to you!

King: THANKS for posting the link to the HA. I tried but I just screwed it up! Thought others would like to see the BS they are handing out!

welcome to the world of HA
to be fair...kathleen is...well...will be a great editor and will be a real advocate for change at the HA
once she a) becomes unafraid to offend anyone and b) loses that scatterbrain
youll notice that her direct contact thread has been untouched for a month
not because shes purposefully ignoring it...because shes simply forgotton about it...
again...in fairness...shes busting her ass trying to make a real change around there and keep the place relevent to the future of journalism....but it usually amounts to a ton of really great ideas being thrown around and nothing really being followed through with....the rest of the staff is usually struggling like mad to even keep up.

well gannett has many small properties...hattiesburg is just a strange market
if youll notice their corporate moves lately, they seem to be shifting away from dumping all their resoursces into the big 4 papers they own and giving more focus to all the smalltown newspapers.
but getting back on track....its got a lot to do with fairley giving everyone quotes that rallies his church and rattles the cage of the people who are tired of our puppet government....
lets face it...fairley sells a few papers

King, I have to agree Fairley MAY sell a few newspapers but by the same token he PREVENTS some from being sold! I know a number of people who refuse to buy the HA because of some of the BS they print! Seems like they get awfully one-sided at times!

that kind of stuff happens with every newspaper
its common knowledge that controversy sells
