Based on his excellent and inspired column in the Sunday edition [16 July 2006] of the Hattiesburg American (which--incredibly--was written and submitted before he learned of Red Bailey's resignation), it appears Mr. Turner Jones is the ideal candidate to become the next Councilman of the Fourth Ward...He is obviously a strong man with a good heart (very much like Red), with genuine repoire/credibility with both "black" and "white" citizens--just what we desperately need at this juncture in the Life & Times of our fair City!

What say ye to such, O esteemed fellows of MyHattiesburg?

So are you saying Turner Jones (http://www.hattiesburgamerican.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060716/OPINION01/607160310/1014/OPINION) is going to run for city council?

I believe that he is undecided at this time--so let's "draft" him!

I have heard that Red has endorsed David Ware - Red must think David is the best candidate and I think we should go with his endorsement. I don't want the see to many candidates join in the race and split the vote as in the Mayor's race

Couldn't have said it better myself Harleydawgh!

I don't know who the othe two people are or what they aspire to do with Ward 4- I have seen the work that Dave is doing to help downtown. I have personally heard him speak regarding the betterment of Hattiesburg and our area- which is Ward 4.

No Offense ... but isn't that what got Hattiesburg into the shape it's in to begin with?? Arbitrarily taking someone's word on another's character?? Seek out your own opinion and vote ... you may find someone who would better fit the area's, or in this case the particular ward's agenda ... not an individual one. Just a thought .... again ... without any disrespect intended.

For those of us who know Turner Jones, I feel if he was elected in ward 4 he may become the white Henry Naylor.

I read the letter he submitted to the HA and was impressed with the content but had a question on the sincerity of the message. I know Turner is a christian man of true convictions, but I also have seen the arrogant side of him.

Even though I do not reside in ward 4, I am greatly concerned for the future of our fair city. I am praying that one or two candidates come out and run against Fairley's person so that the "caring" vote is not diluted and we see the change of power that could ruin H'burg.

After reading his statements it seems to me Mr. Jones is too friendly with the very people who are tearing our city down. The mayor and the chief. If he is such good freinds with the chief how can he vote to send him packing. We want wynn gone, and it seems to me there is a chance that Mr. Jones will keep him. That is not a chance I'm willing to take.

I respectfully request that Hub City Man 1912, with his knowlege of politics, and his love for the city, take another look at what is at stake here. Im sure that Mr. Jones is a good christian man, but that is the same thing I thought of Dupree when he frist became mayor. But his unfair treatment of people who work for the city have changed my thinking. This is no time to be unsure about what a candidate will do. This election will decide our ward and our cities fate.

I truely believe that a united showing in ward four, for one candidate will send a message to fairley that we are not a ward to be messed with. If somehow we could unite behind one candidate it would make it so much easier for us to get the majority we so desperately need to send that message.

DON'T TREAD ON WARD 4.......we are the heart of the city. The center.

I still believe, now more then ever that Dave Ware will give us the best representation. And we need to be able to say "here is our solid 61%, Mr. Mayor". The day after the election I would love to see that mandate in the Hattiesburg American. Maybe then fairley will realize there is a responce to his making those insulting statement and he should not mess with our ward. And it just might give hope to the rest of the city, showing what can be done when good citizens unite, and take there unity to the polls.

I believe everyone has a right to run. I just hope the ones considering, will realize what a message we could send with one strong candidate, and do what is best for the ward.

There is no wondering what Dave Ware will do. He is conserned about exactly the same things we are.

One last thought. My dad grew up in Greenwood, his parents lived most of there lives there and his brothers and sisters rasied their families there. I have been there more times than i can count. Greenwood is as different from Hattiesburg as different can be. And it is not known for the blues, that is Clarksdale. (the crossroads of highway 49 and 61) Greenwood is a fine town and full of wonderful people, my relatives included. But we dont need to be more like Greenwood. We just need to be more like we use to be. It sounded to me like all that delta talk and friendship with the mayor and the chief were just an attempt to make himself look good to the black voters. But it did not sit well with me. Just my opinion.

I appologize for my seemingly rude post earlier ... I completely agree with bartspoon ... and that's all I was tryting to say ... it just came out wrong, I guess ...

I'm not a Ward resident or even one of Hattiesburg ... but I'm also in agreement that this election could be our life blood for Hattiesburg or the death of us all ... The decision should be made quickly with the utmost consideration as to who you guys wish to speak for you ... If Mr. Ware is what is to be believed as fair and just ... Great ... If not ... the options are still open ... seek out and find the best possible one.

I don't know David Ware but I do know my friend I used to work with and who knows everything good and bad in this city .She vouches for Ware. She's one of those people that knows things from experience and I trust her based on my experience with her and having watched her motives. I said to someone that I would help based on what she said. She also knows where the bodies are buried.

I had the same reaction as Bart Spoon did when I read @Greenwood and Turner's political smoozing to the mayor and Wynn. I have no reason to doubt his Christianity but I don't need the multicultural diversity sermon. I went to graduate school already. I feel the canditate for ward 4 needs to be standing up for Ward 4 citizens and do the bidding for their concerns. I felt that being all things to all people I picked up in his speech can water your power down.

I am glad Turner had such a good experience there but Greenwood is not Hattiesburg. Let's make Hattiesburg the best we can be. I think people also forget when you're in a place on a working vacation or a vacation you are in a different mindset than living there day to day. This reminded me a bit of when I went to a new hair salon when my hairdresser was on maternity leave. I went in to have a new style. The owner wanted to change me to aredhead with fine straight hair. Every customer walking out had that looo and every stylist but one looked that way. I,the customer, had to fight for my needs to be heard. I never went back.

We're not all redheads or Greenwoods. Yes Clarksdale is the Blues.
