My family tried to visit Daylight Donuts in Petal yesterday (Sun), but they were closed. So, I went today around 10. Just for your information, their hours of operation are Mon-Sat 5:30-3:30. I was expecting another Petal 1/2 assed attempt at a donut shop, what I got, however, was a nationally franchised donut. In case you're wondering, being a nationally franchised donut means that it was good vs. crappy homemade donut. This isn't saying that there aren't good homemade donuts, only that I've never had one that was as good as Shipley's/KK/etc.
Anyhow, I ordered a 1/2 dozen glazed, and the flavor was somewhere between Shipley's and Wal-Mart, but much closer to Shipley's. I grew up on Shipley's and those are THE donut, IMO. Some people don't like them, but, they're home to me. The Daylight Donuts are very close to that flavor, and I would say, if they were hot, would be indistiguishable.
In their defense, the Daylight Donuts didn't have that crumbly glaze that Shipley's has, so you can eat them without having to brush off your shirt afterward. The prices for an individual donut start at $.49 and a dozen glazed is $4.99. They have specialty donuts and other pastries, although I didn't take the time I should have to peruse the menu to make a report.
The lady was very nice, and that goes a good way, too. They're located on the corner of the Petal Drug building, the side facing Burger King, and are worth $.50 to give them a whirl.

CB, I tried to go there yesterday too only to find that they were closed. Thanks for the info. I was wondering when they were open. Figured they would be open Sun. morning. That's a big donut day!!

well, since i'm a diabetic, donuts aren't exactly on my menu, but i could eat just one every once in a while if i really had to have a "fix". :smt103 i LOVE donuts, and it is really better that i don't even go by there, because i would be sooo tempted!
the only thing i was thinking is, isn't it located in a pretty off-the-main-drag location? i haven't been by there going in front of the drug store so i don't know how it's situated and where their signs are located. i'm sure if they have good donuts and good service they will definitely soon have a good "clientele"!

We have tried them a couple of times and I have been pleased with both the quality of the products and the friendliness of their staff. I really do hope that they can make a go of it.
MSQueen, if you can't eat donuts try their colaches, they are excellent.

I hate pigs in a blanket.
The version with a "k" is not quite pigs in a blanket (agree...way gross). We had excellent kolaches in Seattle at this little hole in the wall bakery. We were almost late for our flight because we went and got several to bring home with us. *sigh*
Yummy.

Daylight Donuts uses good quality smoked sausage instead of hot dogs. They really are good.

I haven't been inside Petal Drug Co. to see if there's much more than a drive thru to DD...
I was asked to pick up 4 doz. glazed for a meeting this morning. Drove to Daylight Donuts and they were closed! I was told that some one else bought it??? Not much of a business person to just close shop. I then drove to Wally world and the only had three half doz. boxes that were old. They said they did not carry Krispy Kreme since Katrina???? My condolences to the officers that freeze their butts off in the morning directing traffic for the school. The poor frozen guys can't even get a decent hot donut in Petal any more to chase a cup of Java.:police:

Isn't there a Krispy Kream in Hattiesburg? There's a little local donut shop in Easley, SC just outside Greenville that makes wonderful Donuts in house too. But generally, CB is right. Homemade donuts are nasty.

Homemade donuts nasty? You never tasted my grandmama's! She used her wedding ring to cut out the holes. Of course they were cake donuts, not the flaky kind, but I'd love to have one of them with a mug of cocoa right now.

Oh yeah! My favorite were the cake donuts with a cup of coffee. Course I could easily knock back a dozen fresh hot KK donuts too. Like cotton candy. Just so fresh they melt in your mouth. KK was a customer of ours when I was in sales. HQ in Winston Salem, NC.
