I just read the opinion (http://www.hattiesburgamerican.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060724/OPINION01/607240323/1014/OPINION) on the HA about Laurel's plan to fight crime and gangs.
"If Mayor Mack finds success with his plan to take back the neighborhoods street-by-street, he could accomplish his chief goal: Nipping a problem before it takes over his entire city."
For some reason, this plan looks very familiar. That's because it is the plan of the original Neighborhood Enhancement Team that Hattiesburg started!
The Chief & Mayor in Laurel are using the exact system by creating the "Laurel-Jones County Gang Task Force" and taking one street at a time and work with the neighborhood to have no tolerance to gangs and crime. That is exactly what Hattiesburg's NET did and it worked until Sept. 2001, when they were no longer allowed to do their jobs. Now look at Hattiesburg. :smt009
