View Full Version : The Emporer Strikes Back!

Chancellor Sebe (Palpatine) Dale, Jr., fresh off his imperial performance last week before the Lamar County Republican Executive Committee, has kicked off his campaign by putting up a huge billboard on Hwy 98 at the intersection with Old Highway 11. The billboard closes at the bottom with the admonition to "Ask Your Lawyer".

I encourage the public to do just this, because if they ask most attorneys in this Tenth Chancery Court district other than his chosen few, they will say much of what I have said: "It is Time for a Change!". Rather than telling the public that they will be in good hands regardless of who wins (as Jay Jernigan did), Jay Jernigan and Win Pittman need to take the gloves off and discuss the real differences in judicial demeanor, philosophy and temperment between the candidates. They are running against Judge Dale -- not for the open post, or against one of the other chancellors -- for a reason.

Ok, the post was part serious and part in jest. A few months back someone said on here that Chancellor Sebe Dale, Jr. bears a resemblance to the evil Chancellor Palpatine in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and I've simply picked up on it.

Judge Dale, who is 85 years old and has served as Chancery Judge since 1978, is being opposed this year for the first time in many years. His opponents are Hattiesburg attorneys Jay Jernigan and Ed (Win) Pittman, Jr. The post was about the new billboard the incumbent has put up on Hwy 98 in Oak Grove. There may already be others as far as I know.

By the way, the picture of Judge Dale, looks to be somewhat dated, perhaps as many as ten years. He stills looks like an older man, but not 2006 old.

King, I hope this is helpful.

This is a tough crowd, I'm kind of sympathizing with hub right now about his post and his proclaimed problems with this judge.

Ok. I'll take it back on topic, Hubba. What a great idea. Let's encourage Jay and Win to take this sucker to the streets for a little political brawling and mud dragging. They can not only take off on Judge Dale but take a few whacks at each other in the process. Your suggestion sounds like the uttering of a political hack, but we all know that couldn't possibly be the situation in your case. :smt102

I commend Jay for opening the campaign in an upscale and dignified manner. It fits the position to which he aspires. I hope Win follows the lead. :smt038

I am not suggesting that the candidates engage in personal attacks that are in the gutter. I believe such is beneath the dignity of our judicial system. If you remember the 2002 Supreme Court race between Jess Dickinson and Chuck McRae, you might remember a McRae ad superimposing Dickinson's head on a cow! In a Court of Appeals race, Judge Kenny Griffis was called a hypocrite in a "Ripley's Believe it or Not" style ad for having taken plaintiff's cases in his career and then criticizing the plaintiff's bar in the campaign. That sort of behavior is bad for the entire process.

What I am suggesting is that the opponents of Judge Dale, differentiate themselves from him to the voters and, yes, make pointed criticisms of his performance on the bench and how they as judge would improve the system. Judge Pittman's statement on his website and push card that says "Judge Pittman believes that every person who appears before him should be treated with dignity and respect" is a quiet dig at Judge Dale, and is appropriate.

But, when a candidate gets up and says that the public will be in good hands if the incumbent is re-elected, you open up the doors to the question beings asked, "Then why are you even running?"

I would not vote for anyone running for any office who is over the age of 80. Why can't these career politicians hang it up? It's like earlier in the year when Trent Lott was "considering" retirement and everyone talked of how he could "move on" to a new phase in his career. The man is almost 65! He's been in Washington for more than 30 years. It is time for him to move on - to retirement. Poor old Strom Thurmond (no pun intended) was 100 when he left office! The guy probably did not even know where he was during most of his last term of office.

We need age limits as well as term limits for public officials. And yes, I am a conservative Republican, but Lott, in my opinion, is not. He lost my respect when he was majority leader of the Senate.

I'm not sure I agree with age limits, but term limits are a good deal. There's a reason we have term limits for the President, and I don't see how that's such a bad deal, so it should apply all the way down. If they were focused on the job instead of getting re-elected, we might have some political movement in this country one way or the other.

As for Lott, I'm not sure if it's the same reason, but I lost respect for Lott when, during his fall, he was saying one thing to one group of people, and one to another. Call it pandering, call it lying, I call it unacceptable in someone who's representing me.

I don't per se believe in age limits, for instance, Judge Thomas is around 65, and you won't find a better Chancery Judge, and if he were opposed this year, I would have supported him wholeheartedly. However, as I've said in another post there is a big difference between a Judgeship and other elected offices. Here in Lamar County we have a Tax Assessor/Collector Jim Patterson, who is 88 years old. He's still in very good health and eats the buffet at the Movie Star in Purvis several days a week! You can't help but love the old man!

He runs an excellent office and has made considerable improvements to it. And he's going to run again next year, and I'll most likely vote to re-elect him, even though I think Jack Smith, one of his assistants who ran against him in 2003, would make a fine Tax Assessor as well.

One reason is that I know if, God forbids, Jim Patterson has some dehabilitating condition or passed on, we'll have a special election in short order with multiple candidates running, and the people will quickly decide Jim Patterson's successor. If something happens to Judge Dale, the Governor decides, and history shows that even recent Gubernatorial appointees often run unopposed in the next election. I want the people to decide, not Haley Barbour or any other future Governor who our judges are..
