Could someone please tell me why the PD has rotating shifts??? It makes NO sense. I know it has something to do with people not wanting certain shifts so they have to rotate, but if you want the job - you'll work whatever you can get. Then you can transfer to the shift you want when positions come open. Isn't that what normal companies do???

Actually, it works out kind-a good. And if i'm not mistaken all the surrounding agencies do it all so,(i may be mistaken). i just think of it like this, if there is ever a time that you need to handle some business during the A.M then you always have that month of nights to do so. It's always a set schedule so u can always plan how u need to. (that's me..) BUT our dispatchers (HPD) just started straight shifts and they pretty much are satisfied with where they were placed. ESPECIALLY the night shift, their not as busy and admin is not downing there every move.

I always thought the shifts were kind of neat. It gives the officers a chance to work the entire city, because different parts come alive at different times of the day/night.

CB: that is one reason, also it cuts down on boredom and lets the officers get to know what each area is like at different times of day like you said. They also get to know the people who are there at different times of day/night...they can then determine who is out of place at a particular time of day. The officer gets to experience different situations that come up.

I've just talked to some of the dispatchers and PD wives. They don't like it cuz they can't get jobs... stuff like that.

It would seem that if we're so short on officers there would be quite a bit of over-time happening, no?

OT - always a good thing if it's voluntary

I thought they were just working short.

What are they doing about details? Farming them out to rent-a-cops?

Maybe they think that if they move the officers around enough it will appear that there are more of them.

they do farm out details, not to rent a cops, but to the s.o.(hattiesburg high, and the library), and to the mall(off duty s.o.'s forrest and larmar). also, when they have shift changes, they overlap a couple a couple hours.

I have noticed more S.O.'s around lately.

There are more deputies around because all the H'burg personnell are jumping ship before the admin sinks it. The extra details are just that, extra. Voluntary and paid at overtime. The rotating shift is good. After a while, you get tired of working days and dealing with the same stuff. After a month of nights, you can get bored, too. There usually more reports on days and more exciting calls on nights.

Yeah, when my FIL worked for HPD he was always gone if he was working days, but those nights, he'd be home playing video games unless it got a bit unruly... of course, in those days, there were actually full shifts, etc.

From all of my sources he may have a resume but the people he worked for wanted him gone. The Mississippi Highway patrol I talked to several this week and they stated that they were looking for ways for him to be gone, and the Mississippi National Guard wanted him gone he couldn't pass a Physical Training Test. It did not quailifiy for either job to continue why else would he be throwing Resumes in your face to prove that he is capable of doing his job if he had nothing to fear then why doesn't he try to present what he has done for the City of Hattiesburg instead! Because he has nothing to show he has done nothing but run officers off from being under paid!
