Just as music can lift the spirit, the faithful at the Cornerstone Baptist Church believe it can destroy the soul.

"We're going to take everything you see here and we're going to have it crushed," Rev. Wm. Dwight McKissic, Sr. said to his congregation.

The sacrifice at this altar is hip hop culture -- movies, music, clothing. Critics call it a culture of hypnosis, brainwashing kids into mimicking degrading values.

"It's all about, you know, selling drugs, getting money, cheating on your girl," parishioner Steve Kelly said.

But I thought rap talked about how it really is, y'know? I mean, nobody knows what's really going on except the rappers out there. They're keeping it real, word?

We play alot of hip hop / rap and even "gangsta" rap... and although I wouldn't allow my kids to listen to the unedited versions of some of these songs (because they can get pretty nasty) ... they can listen to our "clean versions" ... Even when these title tracks are produced and released by their original artist ... the producers then sell the rights or whatever and they are re-mixed to be placed on CDs and such directed towards kids as young as 5 ... So ... who's really at fault? The artist? The producers? The organizations that purchase the titles for re-makes? Or the parents for allowing them to listen to whatever they feel like??

I place the blame soley on the parents. Keep the kids away from the hard stuff as long as you can. At some point, though, they're going to get their hands on it, and maybe you'll have been sucessful at molding their tastes so it doesn't jive.

LOL Doc!!! have you gotten any more Cds without permission??

With our DJ business ... we belong to a couple different download sites ... One time we got this copy of Elmo's Chicken Dance Song (I won't say what the lyrics said ...) ... for my 6 year old ... my silly self, thinking it was Elmo ... didn't preview it before I burnt a copy ... and well, let's just say that we got about half a verse into it ... and it was slung out the door into the trash ... Now I preview ALL music before it is burnt to a CD ... Be it for our home or for the club ... even some of that music I won't allow my husband to spin ... There are some sickos out there ...

I am going to have to agree with you on this one c-belt ... and even if it does, by some chance, jive with them ... hopefully the parents would have instilled a better sense of morales in their young ... like I said ... I allow my older one to listen to the edited versions of some songs ... but even with that, there are still ALOT of them she already knows she better not get caught going through our cases listening to them. Big, BIG trouble ...

Nope! Now its an issue of buying her clothes that are inappropriate...they simply "disappear..."

LoL!!! thankfully the fall fashion trends are a bit more conservative than before ... long tunic shirts ... even layers, and those tacky little legging things, UNDER their shorts and skirts are what's considered "in" now ... So, maybe it won't be TOO bad for ya'll. I know I can definately enjoy the wait until clothing becomes an issue with my girls ... They say trends make a full turn ... like the 60's attire ... came back hard and disappeared just as fast ... along with the mid-rifs and low rise pants ... these will fade too ... I just hope they don't come full turn when my girls hit their teenage years!! :)

The best way to make sure the rappers keep making millions, just forbid it.
I remember my teenage years,i listened to black sabbath and such, people said i was a devil worshiper, and i was going to end up in prison, but my parents never said a word about it.They were living examples of how you should live.MUSIC IS NOT THE ENEMY!!!LIFESTYLES ARE.

People want to blame rab music for kids going bad. Sure, some rab music is disgusting but you don't have to buy it.

If parents would spend as much time with their children as they do on the golf course, hunting and cheering for their favorite sports team, then maybe they could be more involved and show the kids whats right and wrong. We want to blame musicians and sports heros for being bad role models when the parents should step up to the plate and invest in their kids when their are growing up looking for something to latch on to.

I agree with you Doc, but I also think Biggie has some good points. I think if you try to spend the time with your kids and teach them right from wrong they will be more likely to make right decisions regardless of peer pressure. I have seen this first hand with my step-daughter.

About 5 years ago she wanted to buy a CD that had the label "explicit lyrics" on the front. I told her no that I wasn't going to allow her to buy that CD because I didn't think it was good for her to hear. Today she doesn't listen to rap, rock, or country. She just likes Christian Rock, especially girl bands because she is in a girl band herself. It would have been easy to have let her buy the CD and not had it out with her, especially since I'm not her mother but step-mother, but I took the time to tell her about it. I would like to think I had something to do with her making good choices. I tell my kids "make good choices" all of the time, thanks to Freaky Friday.

Now if I can just make it through the next 3 kids!

I have a friend who allowed her jr. high daughter to listen to all kinds of rap music (lyrics about graphic sex) and my friend's line of thinking was that she was going to listen to it anyway so it may as well be with her. Her daughter is now pregnant. I'm not saying it's from the music but from a whole bunch of reasons. It's easy to tell your kids yes to everything they want and want to do.

Its a thing called PEERS.

True enough on this thought Doc ... but this is where their parents come into play ...

When I was younger (and not so pleasant? to be around) ... my parents had this over-whelming sense to over-protect me ... shelter ... what ever you want to call it ... It didn't work to their plans ... because I allowed my peers to ... uuummmm .... run me, I guess for lack of better words. And they did what they did because their parents didn't give a flying hoot about what they did. My parents tried to keep me at home ... I just snuck out ... took off to NO a couple of times ... They tried to tell me what to wear ... as did the school ... and they got told "when you start paying for my clothes, you can tell me what to wear." (Yes, I have held a job since I was 15) ... gave my poor mother living hell is what I did. (IF my dad wouldn't have been TDY and in war zones and stuff ... I wouldn't have, because truth told?? HE woulda straight kicked my a$@ ... Towards our junior / senior years ... we all realized this and ended up hanging around my house afterall ... which thrilled my mom to death ...

My point?? I think it takes a community to raise a child ... and no, I don't mean that in a literal sense ... but when all of the kids' parents are all on the same page and follow through with the book ... a pretty solid, healthy and responsible child will merge into a full blown (grateful) adult.

Yes I do have children, daughters. I know you can raise a child the best you can and some still get envolved with bad things, but spending good quality time talking with your kids will sometimes counteract whats comming from their peers. The majority of us are so busy with work and other activities that we fail to just slow down.

Here is an article from the NY Times 4-8-2006

Researchers say that youths who regularly eat with their families are less likely to misuse alcohol and other drugs, have less stress, eat better, and get better grades in school. CASA has sponsored a campaign to get every family in the U.S. to eat dinner together on the fourth Monday of September.

I encourage all families to sit down, turn off the TV and eat dinner together. I don't know why they want to wait until the fourth Monday of September, why not now?

I called Logans restaraunt today and was put on hold. The music playing while I was on hold was a gangster song. It started with someone saying BANG Shoot that? couldn't make that part out but I thought this was quite inappropriate for a business such as this.

I guess we should quit listening to music all together.
Do you know what "Puff the magic dragon" was about?
I even heard a rumor the "Ring of fire" was originally about VD!
"I shot the sheriff"? Don't get me started.
Me, I hate rap. But, first amendment & all. Yess control what your kids listen too. But, its like the old sayin, I might disagree with what you say, but I'll fight to the death to defend your right to say it.
