View Full Version : Pluto: No Longer a Planet

In current pop culture terms, Pluto has been "voted off the island," "fired," and "eliminated by the viewers' vote."

It's no longer a planet (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14489259/?GT1=8404).

Call me a traditionalist, but when I list the planets (as I learned them in elementary school), Pluto has always been there.

Next, I guess they'll finally force us Americans to switch to the metric system.

In other developments from Pluto, scientists there have confirmed that they have been tracking the only Earth object visible to them and plan to launch a methane bomb at it in retaliation for their planet's demotion.

Their scientists describe it as a big blue and black blob, first spotted in and around Hattiesburg, MS but more recently seen in Africa.

Does anyone remember being subjected to all of that in grade school? I remember a PBS style show called "The Metric System" where they dogged out the "Inchworm" and "Metric Man" was the hero...:smt102

Other than 2 liter Cokes....when do we ever use metric measurements in the USA? To heck with the rest of the world!

9mm handguns require 9mm ammo.

Medications are often in mg (milligrams). Take a Tylenol, Advil, etc, and check out the dosage.

It's STILL a planet to me. To hell with those "egg-heads" !! Gotta go... Minnie's gettin' the vapors!!!

I have to say, this whole gathering today looked like the equivalent of a "Star Trek" convention. The decision to relegate Pluto to a "planet dwarf" is silly to me.

I just read an interesting article where one of the scientists quoted asked, "If a raincoat is still a coat and a cell phone is still a phone, then why wouldn't a dwarf planet still be a planet?"

He has a point.

those scientists are on their own planet........they need to go and check out pluto....might be life on it.....

I'm sure when it was proven the world was round a lot of people thought that was silly too.

Hey, we'll all get over it. I'm over it already.

Science.

Everything in physics is easier with the metric system. Easier leads to a lot fewer mistakes. Fewer mistakes yields a greater return on investment.

Here's a quick example of "standard" vs "metric" systems ...

How many feet are in a 1/4 mile?
How many meters are in a 1/4 kilometer?

How many drams are in an ounce?
How many milligrams are in a gram?

How many cups are in a half gallon?
How many milliliters are in a half liter?

Standard is archaic vs the metric system, but the metric system is comfortable. I come back to thinking about a Saturday Night Live skit where Romans are upset with a law requiring the change from Roman Numerals to Arabic Numerals. Funny stuff along the lines of ...

If I have two of something and Romulus gives me seven, clearly I now have IX things but with Arabic numerals I have ... 9 ... things. Then if Reamus gives the five more, clearly the fourteen is easily represented by XIV where in Arabic it is 1-4. Why change to such a complicated system when our Roman way is clearly superior?

This whole thing with Pluto NOT being a planet makes me laugh. Weren't we talking just earlier this month about there being 12 planets now that we know of because several scientists were wanting to clean up the rules for what a planet is?

I don't have a problem with metrics, myself. I think we should go for it every inch of the way!

No, really, I can use either one. Once you know metrics it really is a lot easier to use. Except Newtons. Newtons are dumb. And Pascals. Those are stupid.

Have you ever done computer math?

How many is 1 kilobyte? 1000 bytes? nope 1024 bytes. Ungh ... well at least until you start understanding why, 2^10 and all.

One megabyte is even better ... it isn't 1 million bytes ... nor is it 1000 kilobytes ... it is 1024 kilobytes or 1024 x 1024 bytes. Blargh.

Metric all the way! I'm even getting used to Celsius degrees.

I'm thinking if we're talking about mistresses showing up naked, the more appropriate word would be "erotic". All things considered.

if you're mistress is from the rainforest, then she would be exotic, would she not? How do you know his mistress isn't a pygmy?

She might very well be a pygmy. :-D

But, to my way of thinking, most men have mistresses for a primary reason, which erotic covers and exotic does not necessarily. :smt102
