Jones Co. overwhelmingly passed a $37M school bond issue on Tuesday. (http://www.hattiesburgamerican.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060913/NEWS01/609130332/1002/NEWS17)

That, along with Petal's recently passed bond issue with over 90% of the vote, kinda blows the hell out of the theory that 60% is an unfair goal to achieve bond issue passage.

Yay for Jones Co.! :smt038

Yay, indeed! :smt038

However, neither the Jones County nor Petal bond issues involved a tax increase. The challenge in passing a school bond issue is when it does involve a tax increase.

Such was the challenge in Lamar County.

Prior to the vote, I heard a radio spot for the Jones County bond issue, and found it interesting that the speaker kept referring to the bond issue as the Jones County Schools Facility Improvement Plan. The phrase "bond issue" was never mentioned.

Smart promotional strategy, IMO.

Improvement plan, Bond Issue or whatever they want to call it, it will be paid back with tax revenue. I still amazes me when some of the people I talk to don't understand what bonds are and how they are paid off.

It is good to see Laurel and Petal pass these by such a large percentage while OG struggled to get over 60%. I think "tax increase" scared off many voters but at least next time they can use the term "bond retirement" and "no new taxes" to get it passed.

Have you read the paper concerning Lamar County. The B of S passed the next fiscal budget with out a tax increase. This sounds like even with the added school bond monies the new growth provided much more than needed to cover any increase. I'll check around to make sure I'm correct on the school thing but the news did report not tax increase in Lamar.

From what I saw of the Laurel schools on the news...they were horrible...long past fixing easily....I am proud of the fact that the citizens realized it was time to update and repair. Congrats Laurel, your children deserve a descent place to learn.

The Jones County school bond issue doesn't cover the Laurel City School District (two separate school districts). Laurel City Schools have attempted to pass a school bond issue, but so far their efforts have been unsuccessful.

Jones County already has great schools... the only thing that scares the heck out of me is that my house is in the Laurel city limits. I hope this doesn't cause another round of people leaving the city!

Kitty thanks for that bit of info..either way I am glad to see the citizens vote affirmatively for better schools..the ones shown on tv looked well past their prime! Maybe the school district doesn't do routine maintainence on a regular basis. As a homeowner I know you constantly have to be fixing something to keep things looking nice..
