i was just going down Hwy 49 by the overpass of 59 and there was this really loud sound and screeching tires. i couldnt really see what happened bc it was dark but there were cars on both sides of the hwy and in the median. now i am hearing all kinds of sirens - a fire truck has gone by and so far about 3-4 police cars were heard. i hope no one is hurt badly but the traffic looks like it is backing up so be aware if your heading north on 49.

All I can say it sounds like a BIG CLUSTER on the scanner.. 2 or 3 wrecks on Hwy 49 around mcdonald's no serious injuries from what I hear

We just came through there about an hour ago...thank goodness we missed all the excitement and the traffic....hopefully no one was injured. Maybe something will be on the news tonite at 10.

yeah thats what it seemed like bc i heard a lot of screeching and then about five minutes later more screeching. it almost sounds like someone's tire blew out or something bc it sounded like a gun shot i had JUST passed there...scary thought

Thanks Noway for the update....I hate that section of road...the north and south bound lanes need a concrete divider between them imo. There always seems to be bad wrecks up there.

There also needs to be better lighting in the area!

i agree maggie - i bet thats why the second hit happened..bc you can barely see anything..and there were people standing in the median on the side...its a wonder no of them got hit

i used to see wrecks out there all the time when i worked for REX when they were over there (across from howard johnson)......bad stuff

I live in Winsor Village Apartments and i thought i heard something like tire screeching and some sirens. But i thought nothing of it cause i hear sirens and tires screeching all the time. Mostly because the freaking Mexicans cross the highway around here and stand in the middle of the turn lane trying to cross the highway. They almost or they get hit by a car all the time. I came out of Arby's and there was 4 of them standing in the middle of the median turn lane getting ready to cross over to get to the Green Room. I tell you, i don't like driving on 49 between 31st and I-59. I wonder if that's what cause the wreck up here. But i guess since u drove by there you would know.

hey ur my neighbor! as do i..thats why i heard all the sirens..i had just got back to my apartment and then all the police drove by....i hate the traffic sounds that i hear though! its sooo annoying bc its really loud..i guess the disadvantage of living in an apartment complex next to a busy highway

Something needs to be done on that section of road that is for sure. Not only have there been alot of vehicle accidents up there but pedestrian deaths as well...like rock said, trying to cross from one side of the road to the other...the darkness doesn't help or knowing where the lanes are north & south...alot of people mistake the center turn lane for a regular lane of traffic, especially at night.

It also doesn't help that this city is so pedestrian and bicycle unfriendly. I'd love to ride my bike to work, but there is no safe way to do it.
