View Full Version : Another Drive By
Another Drive by on Katie. Seems like the popo would be watching the area by now. There was also a break in on Green St by Hawkins elem. a man woke up about 4am hearing a glass break. He called the police. They came but could not find anybody. The man went back to bed, heard somthing and got up and saw a man going down his hall. He grabbed the man but was unable to hold on. the intruder then broke out another window and escaped. the homeowner and a neighbor chased the intruder into a wooded area.Police arrived and surrounded the area but would not go in to get him. The police decided he was not coming out and left. The homeowner and his neighbor went into the woods and found him lying face down trying to hide. They then held him until the police could come back and get him. The intruder was a small mexican man. It is a shame when the citizens have to do the work of the police department. We need a change!!
I was told that the police officers did a search and found him, and dealing with the drive-by they can not be everywhere at once they do have lives and need time off. I'm sure if there were more officers crime would be down but when they go call to call to call and most are stupid calls they don't have as much time to patrol.

WDAM has a story about this shooting. (http://www.wdam.com/Global/story.asp?S=5512844) Seemed someone got hit in the hand and police have a suspect.

and u expected any less?!?!?!
RHS,Are you saying multiple drive by shootings in the same area are stupid calls? Or that the area does not deserve around the clock patrols? The problem is not all the officers but a lack of enough well trained officers that have the right amount of caring for the job they elected to do. Yes they do need time off and they need more help. We as citizens need more protection. the city official need to get off their a$$e$ and do something now. What are you considering stupid calls? Minor thefts, car theft, bar fights, citizens scared because they think they heard somone trying to break in or maybe car accidents? The citizens of Hattiesburg are afraid. They don't feel safe anymore so they are going to call in any noise they hear or anything that looks suspect. These are not stupid calls this is a result of to much crime and not enough officers.
What I don't understand is if the police are looking for specific suspect and report that to the news, why don't they just go ahead and say who it is so the public can help? I understand the need not to reveal suspects in ongoing investigations, but if you know who did it, just say who it is.......unless they really have no idea and are just saying that.

HMB, I can't speak for anybody else. As far as I'm concerned, all those type calls you said are legitamite calls. Listening to the scanner, alot of officers are getting tied up on frivolous calls like, "my 6 year old wont get up and go to school". Trust me I've heard calls like that. Or neighbors upset because the other neighbor piles his garbage too high and wants an officer to arrest them.
When you have higher priorty calls like drive bys, burglaries, etc to have officers tied up on petty stuff just seems like a waste of resources.
We have other people to handle trash piled to high or political signs within 10 feet of the street calls. Thats Eaton and his crew. Believe me I have dealt with them. If our police are answering those calls the dispatchers need better training. Again that points to the administration.

HPD does not screen calls.. If someone calls or an officer one gets sent.. The problem is the people that call really do not THINK about how dumb there call really is. Police officers and dispatchers have to learn that what might not be an emergency to them is one to the caller...
example.. "my kid will not go to school" "my neighbor is talking to loud on his cell phone" "my power is out" "I saw a car speeding 2 hours ago on hardy st somewhere" "my employer will not give me my paycheck" " I need to go get diapers for my kids" "my Boyfriend has my car keys" "usm football game is to loud" "my neighbor borrowed my garden hose and will not give it back" "someone is parked in my parking space" "my 6 yr old daughter talked back to me"
Those are a few I have heard over the years
So please people do not blame shootings on the officers. They work extremly hard when at work and especially right now with so much drama going on. Yes I will agree there are officers that do not do their jobs but you have to remember the ones that do!

if you've got officers tied up talking to a citizen because the neighbors grill smoke is blowing into their yard...he can't be rolling around patrolling and being proactive. And trust me when he clears the grill call, there are like 2 to 3 other calls holding waiting for him to catch

I don't think anyone is blaming the officers for this mess....it all falls back on the shoulders of our mayor and the chief.
The officers are doing a good job and I don't think anyone is faulting them. The problem stems from the lack of enough officers to cover the city.
I certainly hope the citizens start coming to the city council meetings to demand something be done....until the mayor is pushed by enuf people it will just keep being the same ole sh**! A CHANGE NEEDS TO BE MADE NOW!!!

Have lives and need time off?
Chief Wynn said no one was getting time off. That's part of his "solution" to the problems.
Isn't that what he said? :smt102

Sounds like a potential bumper sticker.
Or t-shirt.
Or both.
:(

Yeah Kitty, maybe whoever is making the "Wynn must go" shirts, buttons and bumper stickers could also make one that says..."another drive-by shooting, coming soon to an area near YOU!"
Perhaps they could have a special price if the customer would buy both!

I heard a shot last night around 9:30-10:00. It could have been a backfire or other loud noise. I put the .45 on the coffee table anyway. I really hate this sh!t.

Fight crime. Shoot back.
These little "thuggz" don't scare me one bit. They're just like little insurgents, and can't stand up to a straight fight.

The story in today's HA has attracted several "story chats (http://forums.hattiesburgamerican.com/viewtopic.php?t=410)."
One of the comments mentioned that Chief Wynn cannot carry a gun. What's that all about?
Also, another comment indicated that the house from which a lot of the "trouble" originates is 600 John Street. A quick check of Delta Computer Systems shows an out-of-state owner for that property (http://www.deltacomputersystems.com/cgi-lrm4/LRMCGI02?HTMCNTY=MS18&HTMBASE=C&HTMKEY=MS1800187732005&).

And of course the HA forums continue to turn into a racial debate. I figured they would change but apparantly they haven't

The mayor just said on 6PM news that the Gangs in Hattiesburg know exactly where the Police are at all times. If the mayor knows and the police knows what the gangs knows where are all the arrests? There aren't any. Doesn't this seem strange to anyone but me?

Yep QM, Dupree stated something about the gangs knows the HPD schedules...HOW? Could it be that someone in authority is telling them? Well yes, they may know they work 12 hrs shifts...but unless they have inside info HOW do they know what special details are doing and when?
Has anyone noticed that they are not bragging as much on the net team as they once did right after they got done with the special school they were sent to?
They want to keep setting up "task" force...WHY? The net team was originally set up to primarly handle drugs and gangs, why must they "organize" something else? IMHO they are just trying to appear to be on top of things....they don't have enuf warm bodies to have a full compliment of officers for the "task" force they already have...maybe though they are magicians and will pull some out of a magic hat!
