Let's see how long it takes for the HA or WDAM to pick up on it.

The thugs are thumbing their noses at the mayor and the chief...they know they don't have the resources to do anything meaningful!

They know the admin is just trying to paint a pretty picture for the law abiding citizens of the Berg! They also know 9 times out of 10, if they are caught, NOTHING MEANINGFUL will happen to their sorry butts!

probably nothing is going to happen since dupree's mom doesn't live 2 houses down.

It is a shame how this city is turning out. I moved here from an inner city almost 12 years ago when I was a teenager because of the same problems. It just wasn't safe to go to school because there was so much going on. I know that the Police are doing the best they can. But what can you really do when you are severely understaffed. I heard on WDAM a couple of nights ago that they are having to call officers back on duty after they have worked the 10-12 hour shifts everytime things like this happen. These officers don't have an option to opt-out. They can't get mad and not go back in. If these few officers were not out on the streets, imagine what it could really be like here. Jackson is getting just as dangerous as New Orleans. Do we want our few good police officers to give up on us now? I just believe that the department is doing the best they can right now with what they have. Sure, things could have been in effect in earlier years to combat gang activity. That is why we have the NET team. Surely they can't be everywhere all the time, but these few guys are always called back to duty when a shooting happens. These guys have families and I'm sure they all want to protect their families from criminals also, that is why they work the long hours and come back in after working long hours to make sure we are all safe. Sometimes I feel like the department gets a bad rap. We must remember, there are good officers within the department that do care about the citizens safety. However, I hope that the department can get in some fresh officers because we certainly need them right now.

Blessed, nobody faults the officers. The problem is with the administration.

i wonder how the mayor and chief would evaluate themselves, as well as each others performance in their respective roles of leadership?

Let's see how long it takes for the HA or WDAM to pick up on it.

One day the good citizens of Hattiesburg are gonna get enough and do something about the leaders who are turning Hattiesburg into a dog and pony show. Not a city anyone can point to with pride, it doesn't sound like. That's sad.

Heh heh heh, carsalesguy. Here is what I found on WDAM's website. Ole Dupree has had enough since the two in the past week. Yet another just goes down. HA! Apparently he's had enough but has no idea what to do about it. He's launched a "new" effort? How is it different from the old one that didnt' work?

http://wdam.images.worldnow.com/images/5517757_SS.jpg (http://www.wdam.com/Global/story.asp?S=5517757)In the past week we've seen two people injured in two drive-by shootings in Hattiesburg. Both happened just blocks away from the police headquarters, and both times there were kids in the area. Now Mayor Johnny DuPree says enough is enough, and officials have launched a new effort to get the crime under control.

All I know is N 25th Ave. So I guess that's somewhere between Hardy and 7th St.

They have to get there news from somewhere!!
A little OT, but afriend of mine & I were in a bar downtown & an HA reporter asked us and another person about an event.
We told her we knew nothing about it.
We were quoted the next day as saying we knew nothing about it.
With Pictures!
The didn't even bother to find someone who had been to the event!

Another sad thing about the p.d. is their so called Domestic Violence unit is a farce....they can't keep advocates hired...they have gone through more advocates that I have fingers to count and the last I heard they were back down to zilch again. NO ONE wants to work at the HPD, what most people don't realize, not only have most of the officers left but also most of the trained personnel in records, dispatch, court and the domestic violence unit. Still the admin. blames lack of pay...NOT!!!
Even when they had advocates the program was not being administered in a fashion to get the best results from the program. The ones that have been hired to work the unit may have book smarts but most have not had experience in seeing the carnage that happens during d.a. situations. Reading about it in a book is one thing, being at the scene is another.
The cases are rarely followed up by the advocates, few suspects are sent through anger management classes by the court. The suspect not only needs counseling but intense anger management classes etc. etc. Few are rarely given stiffer sentences by the judges when they fail to do as ordered. The advocates then fail to point that fact out to the judges. It is a sad situation that the victims can't be better protected due to the lack of employees!
