View Full Version : The reason DuPree is finally doing something?

We've seen for months that DuPree has ignored the crime in Hattiesburg. He and his police chief continued to deny a growing crime problem. Then they blamed it on evacuees. But, something happened Sunday to make him suddenly change his mind. Read the story below, and take special notice of enhanced text.
In the past week we've seen two people injured in two drive-by shootings in Hattiesburg. Both happened just blocks away from the police headquarters, and both times there were kids in the area.
Now Mayor Johnny DuPree says enough is enough, and officials have launched a new effort to get the crime under control.
Eyewitnesses say about 10 children were playing outside Robertson Place Apartments when a drive-by shooting occurred around 5:30 Sunday evening.
"My mother lives two doors down," says DuPree. "Same thing. I mean it's horrendous. It's something that we just cannot tolerate."
The recent events are believed to have been gang-related and have prompted DuPree to take a new approach to combat the violence.
"One of the problems you have, in gang activity, is that they are just as aware of the schedule of the police department, task force and NET team as we are. They know the schedule. We'll be doing some things to kind of juggle that schedule so they don't know when the NET team is going to be there."
DuPree says the city will be taking a two-pronged approach to combat gangs, one that addresses both the long and the short term.
The mayor says HPD will be forming a task force of about four or five officers just to target gangs. And the city will try to bring in more officers, in an unconventional way.
"We have been petitioning those mayors around us and the chiefs of police to see if they will allow some of their off-duty officers to come to Hattiesburg and work part-time," DuPree says. "With a city of Hattiesburg uniform. A city of Hattiesburg patrol car. And they will take care of some of the security problems we have maybe at the mall and retail establishments, which allows more of our people to be in the communities."
DuPree says he would like to see police Chief David Wynn forming that task force as soon as possible.
News 7 has learned that Hattiesburg police have made an arrest in connection with Sunday's incident: 28-year-old Patrick Lee is being charged with one count of drive-by shooting. The investigation is still active, and police have other suspects. (from WDAM.com)
Now, I am not poking fun at the situation in the slightest. No one can fault someone for protecting family. It just really puzzles me as to why it came down to this. I am glad his mother is okay, but what about the person who did actually get shot?
IT IS TIME TO DO SOMETHING "out of the box." This is crazy, and here we have Christmas shopping season coming up. We all know how crime skyrockets "around the holidays" anyway.

I agree with you there. Let the LPD and the JCSO keep what they have. Dupree needs to clean up his own mess. He needs to start by throwing Wynn out on his ass. Let's just pray that he doesn't bring in someone that is much worse. We've all heard rumors about who would replace Wynn if he were to get the boot... I wish I were able to say it couldn't get any worse, but it can and probably will.

when mayor dupree dismantled the N.E.T., he created this mess. he should acknowledge his big error and make adjustments to correct the problem. a once superior police force, now reduced to a skeleton operation. mayor, you made a big error. don't you agree?

I said awhile back that Dupree or Wynn wouldn't do anything until someone they knew was involved with a crime. Too bad that Dupree didn't care enough about the 12 year old girl getting shot to make this decision, even though it's a stupid decision, he waited until it got close to his mother.
But Dupree is in a state of denial. Wynn is the problem and Wynn needs to be gone. Things will not get better until that happens and Dupree needs to realize that. For the life of me I don't understand why he can't see that.
I have ask and I haven't found one Officer that is willing to work at HPD part-time. This will flop just like some of his other knee jerk reactions.
One more thing. I have a female friend that lives on S.16th Ave. that goes to Carey and works and when she got home from work last night at 7:30pm, she parks in her carport and takes some books inside and goes back outside to get some more stuff and when she opened her door and walked outside a black male was already under her carport looking inside her car. It scared her and startled him and he ask her if she wanted to sell her car. She immediately ran back inside and locked her door. The a$$hole jumped on his bike and took off.
Crime is out of control in this city and it will only get worse. Be prepared for anything and arm yourself.

why does it seem like it is always a "black male"?

It's a cycle that needs to be broken. Too many black males simply do not have a black male adult role model to show them right from wrong. The boy in today's HA is in the care of his grandmother. Children need mother figures, but they need a positive male influence, too.

I live on a high traffic street- there is a good deal of foot traffic. The only people that have said anything to me while walking down the street have been just that- black males. I have a variety of people that walk down my street. Black, white, hispanic, men, women and children. Some on bikes some on foot. I have no explanation for why only the black males are the ones to speak.
Or could it be that they heard " my mayor's black and I'll do what I want " ?

You probably WON'T find anyone willing to work at HPD either! BOTH the chief and the mayor must really take these people for fools! The people left because they were tired of the b.s. WHAT makes them think they would come back part-time?
Those two were so sure they would have people falling all over themselves to become reserve officers....the chief told those attending "his" recent neighborhood assoc. meeting that they did not have any takers...no one applied! WELL DUH! Did they really think they would want to work for that a**hole for nothing? Geez, even the ones who get paid are running over each other to get the hell out of dodge! Those two should join the circus this week while it is in town....THEY ARE BOTH CLOWNS!

Not to get off-topic...but with all the latest crime and gang stuff in town, I guess HPD hasn't had a chance to ever solve the "Break-in at City Hall". it's hard for mayor dupree to address this crime problem. many of these young men that are committing these crimes are the children and friends of his voters and supporters. he has pledged to loosen police oversight in these areas of hattiesburg. that was one of the major complaints for him to solve, call off the police and do away with the N.E.T. he fulfilled his campaign promise and now look at what happened. a hard head makes a soft bottom and an unattractive city.

Please allow me to wax nostalgic every once in awhile. I think that's Timothy lane on the other side of the skreet. Ouch! Now, I've got no reason to doubt cowgirl. But... I moved here in 2005, after JD was elected so I missed out on all that. The mayor has gotten what he wanted. A less agressive PD. Less enforcement actions in the minority community. Ahh, serenity. No complaints, everybody is happy, beaming preachers shower him with praise and slip him the odd coin on the side...figuratively speaking, of course!
And then comes...dramatic pause...wait for it...
The Law of Unintended Consequences!
The combined effects of de-policing and upward discipline create a political Perfect Storm!
De-policing: When the administration makes it unpleasant to do police work in a neighborhood, community or group. Police find other things to do. They can do crossword puzzles, Soduko, listen to the radio, read the paper, check out library books, write tickets on deserted stretches of road, bust crack ho's on the Bypass, or chase bull$hit calls about my kid talked back to me.
Upward discipline: When the workers find the atmosphere of the organization incapable of supporting human life they exert the strongest form of discipline known to managers - the upward kind. Doesn't matter what orders the boss gives, where he threatens to transfer you, what crappy assignment you are booted into. When the worker tells the boss "I quit" the boss is powerless to do a thing. When multiple workers do this,
it invariably indicates a boss who needs to go away.
Say... does this mean all that time spent reading those management and administration text books was actually...you know... Good For Something?
Crikeys! Next it'll be Maslow's Needs Hierarchy!!
Wishin' I could see what was in my blind spot...

Notice that the mayor's plan is to have those off-site officers come in to "patrol" the shops, streets, etc. so that HPD officers can concentrate more on the drugs and gang issues. That way, they can sweep their buddies' crimes under the carpet at Mount Carmel. And if those off-site officers happen to ticket a friend of theirs, it can be taken care of in house.

I'm still thinking/wondering if Mr. Fairley doesn't have some dirt on Mr. Dupree regarding the real estate deal, too. Of course, the 3 of them are buddies, each covering the other's arse, and there may be just enough dirt on each of them to keep 'em all in line! LOL. Of course, that's just my feeble brain clicking away.
I like the ideas of calling city hall, marching with signs for better management, etc. But me thinks a peaceful march would cause officers needed elsewhere to have to 'babysit' us, 'cause DW might git skeered.

Just when is fema coming in to audit? I don't believe a thing will happen to anyone when they do get here. Although trucks were rerouted to a different area than where they were suppose to go-gas was distributed to a few, etc. I believe these people will never be held accountable for their actions while here on this earth. They have yet to be for other things and will continue to have special priviliges. FEMA won't touch them!

hattiesburg had gangs when mayor dupree took office. we DID NOT have all of this mess until he disassembled the police department. the answer is a qualified police force staffed at the funded level of the city. hattiesburg is 40 officers short. these men and women left because of poor leadership. the mayor met with the officers and told they that "this is the way it is going to be - like it or leave it" - I am the mayor". well, he is, AND L-O-O-K and the mess he has created. he says that his decisions are lead by the LORD. i don't think an all knowing God would tell him to harm this highly effective police department, the first and only (at one time) certified police department in the state. the youth are already known by preachers, teachers and authorities. it's NOW time to let police do their work. i am so saddened with our state of affairs. he's bad, bad, bad.
