Yesterday Oct. 10th the Hattiesburg Firefighters Association was granted thier charter be the International Association of Firefighters. Are membership is 105 strong and I believe that most of the few who have yet to join will do so in the future. We believe that in the past most administrations have ignored the contributions that the Hattiesburg Firefighters bring to this city and even the region. Security is the most important thing that a goverment provides for it's citizens. If you do not have security you do not have safe schools, or business's locating in our community. If you do not have security your property values drop and that cost every homeowner money. A good Fire Dept. with dedicated well trained men is part of that secure enviroment that promotes job growth. Hattiesburg at this point in history could see phenomenal growth. We are so important to the rebuillding of the Gulf Coast everything that goes to the Coast comes through Hattiesburg. The HFD has some of the best members in our ranks. They are dedicated and loyal to this community. Just remember this if it is a life threatening situation the HFD will be called. We do more than go to fires and show the trucks at schools. Our plan with the Firefighters Local is to get involved in our community. whether we are HFD issues or charity fundraisers we will be doing our best to make Hattiesburg a safe place for our citizens and a place that any business would like to locate. Thank you Hattiesburg

Smoke Diver, CONGRATULATIONS! The THANKS should go to all the guys with the fire dept. There are alot of people who don't know just how much y'all actually do while on duty.
I think alot of people think y'all just laze around when not actually responding to a fire or to an accident...they either don't know or seem to forget that y'all do building inspections for fire safety concerns etc. etc.
I also know that y'all are away from your families alot and miss alot of important milestones with your kids etc. with the schedules y'all work.
I am sure I can speak for the other members of MH and say we really appreciate all the hard work and scacrifices that are made on our behalf.

well, at least we know that if there is a fire, someone is going to come and put it out

too bad they won't let them arrest thugs, cuz the police chief doens't know how to make their guys do that.....

I would say it's not so much that the police chief doesn't know how to make his guys do it; it's that either he won't let them do it or there aren't enough of them to do it.

That might be Duprees next idea, use firemen.I'm surprised he hasn't asked Billy Bob, or called Camp Shelby for MP's. Or maybe he has. :smt102

fuzzis, EXACTLY! All the guys I have talked to WANT to make arrest, they have orders who and who not to arrest. They are so short handed they just go from call to call to call.
They are so damn aggraviated about it all...I am really surprised that there hasn't been more resign in the last week or so...they are walking zombies!

Smoke Diver, well, maybe at least yall could "clean up" some of the sh** that goes on over there and some of the ones who are seen as frequent visitors to the mayors office! :) lol

Too bad the water wouldn't have some type of germacide in it! I have seen some skanky people coming out from the C.H. NOT all of whom were visitors!

Way to go y'all. You will now have someone to stand up for you and make it hard on administation to do things their way ONLY! Smart move on your part if you ask me. I have mentioned a good union for police would help alot of the underdogs on the force and keep things above the table.

Can The policemen join. I am glad the firemen have stood up and taken care of themselves. Unions have always had a bad rep in the south but it is probaly where they are needed most. Now that you have the representation go get what you deserve and are owed.

I'm not sure how much power unions have these days in terms of bargaining...better benefits and pay, etc...but I really do think that the function they serve these days is to prevent abuse of employees by employers. I know that I desperately miss my union.

Our goal is to work with the city administration. Our belief is that firefighters are the ones to talk to about firefighter issues. We hope the Mayor and Council will listen to us. If we bring up an issue we will have facts and documentation to back up our concerns. When this endeavor was first brought up we did discuss if the HPD could join. The International said no. I do encourage the HPD to become part of a Police Union. We do not want to get into local politics. There are some issues on the State level we will push. One is we would like the right to deduct our Union dues from our paychecks. All we ask is that the Mayor and Council would listen to our concerns, we have the same goals the best Fire Dept in Mississippi.
