The policy started last year, shortly after Mr Low took office. While the pink jumpsuits are intended to act as a deterrent and stop inmates returning to jail, the pink walls are intended to calm tempers at the cramped prison.

The inspiration came from Joe Arpaio, the man dubbed America's toughest sheriff for his policy of keeping prisoners in Arizona under canvas in temperatures of up to 54C (130F). Sheriff Arpaio fitted his inmates with pink boxer shorts to stem thefts of prison underwear.

"It's just an easy step that will hopefully make some progress," Mr Low said. "That's not the Holiday Inn they are staying in up there."

The sheriff said that the reoffending rate was down by 70% since he introduced the pink regime. He added that there have been no fights among inmates since the walls were painted pink.

I think this would work WONDERS!!! Especially as homophobic as most inmates are and not wanting to be a 'punk', I think they should make them all wear pink spandex jumpsuits, as tight clothing is also considered a sign of being a 'punk'. I would think that since the idea of prison doesnt' really scare them, humiliating their male ego would be the ticket to help them on the right path in life.

I was watching tv a few weeks ago and one of the news shows (Dateline etc.) had a segament on this sheriff...it was very interesting and the guys that were locked up seemed to really like him...of course that could have been just for the camera...however most admitted they had done wrong and said they understood about the punishment, although they did admit they didn't like it...several stated they had gotten stronger and more understanding and more tolerent because of what they had endured...I suppose only time witll tell.

I for one totally uphold this kind of treatment for criminals. After all, what is punishment if not something you don't like. The way prisons are set up now, the inmates get 3 square meals a day, air conditioning and more rights than those people they victimize. Kudos to the sheriff. If we had some real leaders, maybe we could try that.

i am not getting something,is it prison or jail?
misdemeanors,or felons?
i dont think of a guy working off a parking ticket,a criminal.
robbers, drug dealers, gang members, ect. sounds like a good idea for those types.

I learned yesterday that the color orange is a gang color, so when they're putting these inmates in orange jumpsuits, then some of them are happy, the others are put out.

Really, I really like this idea of pink prison wear. What can it hurt? I've got some red dye I'll toss in their laundry load to dye their underwear pink. Slowly replace the old orange with carnation or Barbie pink.
