The HFD has been passed the responsibility of providing the security checks at city hall. I know they're sworn officers but does this mean they get extra duty pay???

This was enacted today.

Are you kidding? Unless youre a "big wheel" or kissing someones ass...they want to pay you as little as they can. It doesnt matter that youre doing your job and someone elses. Its bad enough that new hires are starting off at what those who've been there 10yrs are making, but when they knowingly double somebodys workload, they should adjust the pay accordingly.

I guess next they'll be patrolling the malls and shopping centers, hosing off kids with a portable fire extinguisher.

I was just joking when I said the mayor would start using firemen. Could the union make them pay them more? I hope so. From what I heard the firemen make less than the police.

So you're the bright one that gave them the idea! Thanks!!!!

I was just kidding about the extra pay - I KNOW they don't make any money.

They do get paid a lot less then the police. My hubby would be making $12000 a year more for the same time and rank in the PD.

By the admin. starting the use of firemen to patrol city hall tells me they must have alot LESS police officers than they are telling us...otherwise why would they put them in that situation?
Like one of the firemen said on another threat, what do they want them to do to an intruder if they see one...hose him down? :) Seems they are more desperate than they want to let on...scatterbrain ideas keep rolling in however. THANKS to all the fire & police officers who keep watch over our town...thanks for hanging in there for us all!

So, could the firemen just refuse to pull police duty? Wouldn't the union back them up on this?

maybe the admin knows something at city hall is about to go up in smoke...

Or maybe they need to burn something somewhere else so they are going to have the firemen busy there.

I'm upset cuz I signed up to be a firemans wife -- I know my husband is well trained and very skilled at firefighting, USAR, fire investigation, Rope Rescue...the list is long but I'll keep it short; all the things they are specially trained to do. They are NOT trained in law enforcement. I am NOT happy with the mayor for letting the police department get into this bad of shape and deciding that he will put my husband into the middle of it. I am NOT happy with Chief Miller for letting it happen. I am NOT happy with the city council for letting it happen. I DO NOT want my husband - or any of the firefighters put into this position until they get training.

I totally support the HPD and sympathize with them, but I know they'll agree that once again the city is putting more lives in danger.

And Maggie - I'd love to see them hose down the bad guys - those hoses put out so much pressure it could rip a hole right through ya
and Wile - hosing kids with fire extinguishers would be fun to see at the mall...esp if they only sprayed their privates and made it look like they peed their pants (so I can be petty once in awhile)

so, instead of breaking into city hall, they are now going to burn it down?

nice.............

Is putting firemen on security at city hall even legal? Isn't that asking for a lawsuit? What if something really does happen and they don't know how to handle the situation because they haven't been trained and someone gets hurts? I can't believe the city would even put firemen in that kind of situation. This is crazy and you need to make sure WDAM & HA knows....

On second thought, would this be the same kind of thing as hiring a security guard? They aren't trained police officers either, although I would suspect most of them have had some kind of training. Regardless, I still think it's wrong....

The bottom line is that the admin knows city hall won't be broken into again cause everything admin wanted was taken in the first burglary. Therefore they feel there is no risk to the Firemen.

so what im hearing here is...

non police people are doing police work?

Maybe they could use some jail inmates to do the patrols... They have experience with law enforcement!

I can see it now. A crook comes out of city hall with hard drives and says don't open that water hose or the computer equipment gets it.

i just loved how city hall said that the hard disks were of no use to anybody....nobody had a $8000 server at the house that worked.....

well, just to let you know, i don't live in the city, but i do have a once $8000 Server in my computer room sitting there....

and also, they said that it couldn't be used in another computer.....what were they running? an commodore amiga? they were probably running a kaypro...and if that was the case i couldn't use it......

So carsalesguy what was on the drives since nobody else has the server to run them. Besides the $8000.00 server at city hall was probaly not a $2000.00 server we just paid $8000.00 for it.

I think the powers that be know of the liability issues this plan opens up, but they also know that it won't be broken into again because the thieves/friends got what they wanted removed the first time. I wonder what was really on them that they're scared of. I'm sure we'll never know.

Could this be a retaliation move because the FFs have decided to reactivate the union? This looks like some good old-fashioned union busting tactics to me.........

If the HFD can help the HPD we have no problem with patrolling city hall. We have limitations as to what we can do. But , a uniformed presents can be a deterant. Also it will give the HPD a little more time on the streets. This is not retaliation for any thing that the HFD has done. This could be a positive thing for HFD.

Getting exposure for the fire department can be a good thing. Letting the public see the FD out working and staying in the public eye can go along way as long as it is positive.
