If the NET team hadn't been put in moth balls for so long, these alleged gang members (http://www.hattiesburgamerican.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061017/NEWS01/610170305) likely would have been off the streets well before now.

I predict the term "alleged gang member" is going to show up in every arrest now.

Kitty you are exactly right! I would be willing to bet they would still be on the street had their not been all the shootings etc the last week or so. The admin would have just let it ride on as it has in the last 5 + years. I think the admin. was beginning to feel the pressure from the citizens of the Burg!

Or, it could be that the NET team didn't have anywhere for misdemeanor criminals to go. The jail and work center were already overcrowded before Katrina. The work center had sustained pretty bad damage from Katrina and I read in the newspaper, it just opened back up last week. Well, however long it took, I'm glad these gang members are off the streets.

what they should have done was arrest the gang members, and put them to work cleaning up the work center....along with all other misdemeanor criminals....who cares if you can't sleep inside.....set up a tent

That is a good idea!

it is, but with the stupidity of our administration, they would have never thought of something like saving the taxpayers money by using free labor....

IGID

Ok, here it is. The work center houses misdemeanor criminals of which the majority are arrested for unpaid traffic tickets. Which means as soon as they get somebody to run up to the front desk and pay it, they are released. Very few of them spend more than a few hours at the work center and they are right back out on the street. The opening of the work center is not the solution to the rising crime rate. It sounds good on the news, but it will have zero effect on the robberies, shootings, burglaries, etc..

You are right IGID..but it certainly can't hurt to have a place to stash the thugs! I still say just put them in tents...give them a fan...it has worked in other jurisdictions, it can work here too.

I thought Air conditioning was a civil right?
It's right there in the constitution between the separation of chuch & state, & the right to an abortion.

Put them Gang Bangers in a Hummer with 26" chrome rims and send them over to Iraq with a map.

who are they??? why aren't they listed in the Community Diary??

IGID
10-17-2006, 06:33 PM
Because the diary only list felonies. If the listed misdemeanors, they would have to list the hundreds that got speeding tickets today too.

Reading all this at first, I thought it was a big deal until I read where most of the outstanding warrants were for misdemeanors. Why does this need all this grandstanding? Isn't serving outstanding warrants just regular housekeeping? Or has that been neglected as HPD administration has run the police off? Give it to the firemen they're having to use.:smt086

Listen to this: about ten years ago the maricopa county (phoenix) sheriff- I think his name was Joe Arpaio- re instituted manual labor for inmates, bought up a huge shipment of frozen corn dogs, and spent their lunch money on a giant razorwire fence. I can remember a buzz going through the community-- people sure didn't want to get arrested!

Wondering what he's up to these days? Maybe we could recruit him! I think people who are in jail should be put to work sorting recycleables, running waste management and growing vegetables to go with their corn dogs, personally.

HPD serving outstanding warrants is a joke. There is no telling how many thousands they have in the file cabinets at the front desk...sometimes they get lucky and serve a few but as often as not the warrant cannot be found. IF y'all had any idea how screwed up the court system is down there you would bust a gut laughing....believe me when I say it is sooooooo screwed up. I have seen many people arrested several times on the same warrant because the clerks were to damn lazy to remove the name from the computer system by "serving" the warrant in the computer after the officers first arrested the suspect. I am so surprised that they havn't been sued yet for false arrest by someone being arrested the 2nd or 3rd time for the same warrant.

I doubt very seriously that many officers have even attempted to serve warrants in the last 4 years....they just don't have time....the few they have served have probably been because the person was arrested for something else and they lucked up and found the outstanding warrant. Unless things have changed for the better recently (and I don't think they have, same court mgr is still there and she doesn't have a clue) a good portion of the warrants are misfiled because the clerks just stick them anywhere, to hell if they are where they are suppose to be or not. You have to take in to consideration that probably 95% of the court clerks are all new and don't have a clue what they should be doing..and they do not have anyone there that really knows the system and can teach them.

wallbanger I saw a program on tv about two months ago about this sheriff...he is still sheriff...doing a great job. The citizens in his county voted him back in office by almost a 100% vote...some of the thugs were interviewed and they said they didn't like it there but they had respect for the sheriff because he was always honest with them and showed them respect...no matter what crime they had committed, he showed them respect...I thought that said alot...

If you find one that can teach MD see if they can tutor a bit in dispatch too.

No-Halo, I hear it is really bad in dispatch as well as records....a perfectly good department has gone to hell in a handbasket within 5+ years. I do not understand how they have got re-certification this last time...it will take years for it to get back to where it once was...WHEN they get someone in there that can do the job...as long as this admin is there it will just contine to decline. :(

It is very bad MD, they only have 3 dispatchers left over there that have a clue (Scott and Gary) and a part timer (Scooter), they actually know what to do with any situation.
The majority of the others employed in the communications division will never be a true from the heart "Dispatcher".

No-Halo, You are exactly right about the dispatchers...I have known those three guys for 10 years and they are VERY good! Is Randy not there anymore? He was good too. I will tell any one...it takes someone special to be a dispatcher. In my 20+ years of law enforcement I was forced to dispatch about a half dozen times for a short period of time due to an emergency...I HATED IT! I would look like Twiggy if I had to make a living at that job. I would starve because I would not take on that responsibility. You can ask any officer and he will gladly tell you if you don't have a good dispatcher you are screwed! THEY are your lifeline when all hell breaks loose!
THANKS guys for all your hard work and dedication...we don't tell yall that enough! The city should give yall a bonus...a BIG bonus!

I havent heard Randy in a while, I'm not sure if he's still there of not. If he is then I'd have to add him to the list of "Dispatchers" that actually work at HPD.
And yes it does take a special breed to do their job, if you don't have what it takes then quit pulling a check and go find another career.

what are we going to do? this crime is out of hand. people are afraid, crime has paralyzed this city. i believe that crime in this city is highly connected to the lack of our top personnel in the city. what would our past police chiefs and directors think about hattiesburg's situation. i heard a supporter say the other day that crime is up everywhere. he said that the mayor has nothing to do with crime. he also said that the chief did not either. boy, how MIS-informed and stupid.

That person is right - crime is up everywhere, and the mayor and chief have nothing to do with it. However, where the mayor and chief is at fault is in their response to the situation. You don't respond to a major influx of people and crime by running off the very people you rely upon to provide the services needed to handle the situation.

Some people seem to forget that when you have a job to perform it requires more than just showing up and collecting a check. There has to be accountability somewhere and those people who say the mayor and chief are not responsible either don't care about accountability or don't have a clue what it means. Someone is definitely responsible for our sad state of affairs and it's not God, the officers, or the little boy peeing in the corner.
