My mom has a friend who lives on Pecan Dr. (right off of Timothy Lane) she told me earlier tonite that the Hudson's Dirt Cheap behind Kia was robbed at gunpoint last night. Has anyone else heard about this? I havn't seen anything on Wdam or in the paper....it may just be rumor but I certainly wouldn't doubt it....:smt102

MaggieDoodle, My DH & I go to the Hattiesburg & Petal DC every weekend! That is so scary!!! I wonder why it wasn't in the HA or on WDAM??? Did your friend happen to notice if there was yellow police tape cordoning off the area? :smt118

That can't be true. The work center has opened for misdemeanor criminals and 25 gangsters were jailed over the weekend.

firefly she didn't say...I don't know exactly how she knew other than she walks down and shops there a good bit.. it is only a few hundred feet from her house. It is scary..these thugs are getting brazen for sure...it is probably gonna take someone killing a couple of them before some of this mess stops...The regular Hudson's has security guards (for all they are worth) but I don't know about the Dirt Cheap stores..it has been several years since I was in one. Everyone just needs to be xtra careful where ever they are going in this Burg. I have come to the conclusion it isn't safe anywhere around here.

IGID, I see the problem with your statement.....IF this actually happened...it would have been an "armed" robbery...a felony...that means the ones at the work center couldn't or wouldn't have commited the crime since they are misdemeanor thugs.... :) lol

MaggieDoodle, you are so right! Whenever DH & I go to Hattiesburg, we are extra vigilant. I don't feel safe in that town & wonder if I ever will again? It is so sad that the Burg has deteriorated so badly!:smt086

Hmmmmm...I suppose it's a matter of perception. I feel safe, and I refuse to give in to hysteria.

I am between feeling totally safe or hysterical. I am aware that crime is going up and am wary of certain areas. I also pay attention to locking my car doors and just try to be aware of what's going on around me.

I worked at Kia last night until about 7:30. I did not see any police cars then.

MD, that post was made in jest. They made such a big deal over the work center opening and how it would take criminals off the street, but as I've stated before, that will have no effect on the real crime around here. It did happen. It's in the paper today.

Thanks IGID, I knew you were joking...these days we have to joke to keep from crying about the situation! I am glad to know that my information was correct though...thanks...I havn't gotten my paper yet this morning.

Fuzz- I also refuse to give in to Hysteria. I am basically safe. I agree the HPD is messed up, but I look out for myself and my family. I have to look at it like this- if it is my time to go it is my time to go. I can't control when God calls me up... But I would like to hang out a little!

You just have to be watchful and mindful of the situations you are in.

no hysteria for me... but as a young female I am just EXTREMELY cautious about places I go and whether or not I'll go alone. My biggest prob is that I'm training for a marathon, but am having a difficult time figuring when and where I can do my "long" runs. I've got guy freinds that will do 3-4 miles, but not many people are up for the 8-10 milers. I just don't feel safe enough running out on the Longleaf trace alone. I usually run around 5am... any suggestions on where might be safe? Campus? track at Wesley (i hate running in circles though! haha)?... I know it's a little off topic, so if anyone has any thoughts you could just PM me if you prefer. :)

the hpd has loss the respect of even the officers that still remain. it's a mess in hattiesburg. officers are hired without passing competencies, with no reasoning and justifications for promotions. these lateral hires are poor. i hear the latest police hired has a tatoo on his neck. boy, wow, ooh wee. what does that mean. they have to lack the sensitivity to impressions and modeling the proper way. another sign of the downfall of a once great department and city. mayor, you should be ashame. OR, should the voters be ashame. WOW!

LOAA, have you thought about starting at the Jackson Rd. station and running toward Prentiss? It's kind of out in the country, but you don't have to run through that first 2 miles in the hood. Also, you can get you a North American Arms .22 mag and its small enough to carry in your hand in it's little leather holster while you run and they can't tell what it is. I know, I do.

Looks like they knew when she was going to make a deposit. Any one in business should be aware of your surroundings and change your deposit times and routine!!!!

Any one in business should be aware of your surroundings and change your deposit times and routine!!!!Are you sure she was making a deposit, or was she just locking up and leaving her business? It didn't state that the robbery happened at a bank, just an undisclosed location on Broadway Drive.

But you are right about making sure of your surroundings. If I were a business owner who regularly transported a large amount of money, I think I'd have someone armed and ready standing by whenever I moved the money from one location to another.

It used to be that merchants could call HPD and ask for an escourt to the bank and within just a few minutes and officer would show up and follow you to the bank to make the deposit...of course these days merchants do not have that perk to fall back on due to lack of officers working. :(

i remember when i used to work for rex if we had over 500 in CASH than we would have another employee follow the manager to the bank...we were all guys working there....

everywhere that i have worked and had the duties to take the deposit to the bank, i have always asked a fellow employee to follow me to the bank or wherever i had to go to make change, for 2 reasons:
1) security blanket
2) cover my rear end so that way if they said that they did not get the deposit, i had a witness saying that i went over there and did drop the money

I suppose that "they" refers to law enforcement. I copied the following quote, however, from an article a few years ago:

The Supreme Court of the United States has ruled that a Law Enforcement Officers duty is to protect society as a whole, not the individual member of the community. The typical ratio of Law Enforcement Officers to individuals is, One Police Officer for every One Thousand Citizens.

I'm not sure what the ratio is here in Hattiesburg at this time, but the above is one reason why I think citizens should learn how to use a firearm and get a firearms concealed carry permit.

Zorro, do we still need to get a permit to carry a weapon after Haley passed the new law allowing citizens to carry a gun in their car?

Believe me zorro ... I was in no way knocking our dwendeling police force ... it is not thier fault they don't have the man power or the material means to provide adequate protection for an area that is growing as fast as our PD is shrinking ... I do believe that they are doing thier best regardless of what was given to them ... With that being said, I guess "they" are meant to be the one's who CAN, but choose not to provide this means to an end for all of us ... the Administration.

You don't need a permit to carry a gun in your car. However, you need one if you plan on carrying it out of your car, other than at your residence or your workplace (if you own your workplace). I frequently go out at night to a store or restaurant, and I don't want to be without a firearm on me at those times.
