Although I live in Hattiesburg city I also live in Forrest County. I feel like I should be able to use whatever agency I choose. I pay taxes for both. If Hattiesburg is needing to borrow officers why not give the west and north end of the city back to the county? If the county is over the city, why can't they be my officers? Can anyone answer this from a legal standpoint?:smt006

They are your officers. You may call the Forrest Co. Sheriff's office for any law enforcement issue you have within Forrest County. That includes the city limits of Hattiesburg and Petal.

You are correct HB. The Sheriff has directed his Officers catch any call for service requested by anybody in Forrest County regardless if they live in the cities or not. All they have to do is call. Legally, the Sheriff is the chief law enforcement officer in his county. The cities are in his county, the county doesn't surround the cities.

IGID if the county officers are out in the rural parts of the county and someone calls from within the city will it take them long to get there?

Also if they're busy on county calls how long would it take them to get to the city ones?

Less than 10 minutes. They shoot for a 10 minute or less response time anywhere in the county. I realize sometimes that's impossible because of the length of the south end, but that's what the try for.

I know the SO is doing a great job. In & out of the city.
But, I figure if I had all my .45 magazines loaded 5-7rd., 1-15rd. and one in the pipe, in 10 min. I could get rid of 51 bad guys before they arrived.
Holy rat-nuggets, can you imagine the paper work?

We need more people like you instead of the ones that think the police can be everywhere all the time.

Forrest county sheriffs office has always served the entire county even in the city limits. The sad part is that some restaurants in the city limits would only give Police officers 10% off their meals and not the deputies. Course that was a long time ago so maybe they do the same for all Law enforcement now.

Some do. Most don't.

Man, just call Waffle House or Shipley doughnuts and they can pass the word on to the Police.

I think he was saying the police are always at Shipleys or Waffle House.

Heck, if Forrest County deputies would take over this part of the city I would be glad to furnish donuts to them on a daily basis. I trust, like and respect THEM. A lot of the old HPD officers are there along with several good friends so I know what to expect out of them. NO ATTITUDE! I applaud them for this.

Most Deputies Don't Do Do-nuts, Just Waffle House. Nuttin Like A Greasy Pattie Melt At 2 Am:)

Doesn't the city voters get to vote on the sheriff? I can't remember. I am pretty sure we do.

I was just thinking how ironic it is in most counties that people feel safer in the cities because of police? Well, I am only thinking of 1 or 2 counties here in the south part of the state.

And it seems that people have more faith in the Forrest County Sheriff's dep't than HPD. Well, the exodus of officers from HPD has lessened the officers on patrol to less than an adequate # of officers. I understand why they are leaving.

It's a shame that The HPD has been run into the ground.
