IN her thigh-highs and ruby miniskirt, Little Red Riding Hood does not appear to be en route to her grandmother’s house. And Goldilocks, in a snug bodice and platform heels, gives the impression she has been sleeping in everyone’s bed. There is a witch wearing little more than a Laker Girl uniform, a fairy who appears to shop at Victoria’s Secret and a cowgirl with a skirt the size of a tea towel.

Anyone who has watched the evolution of women’s Halloween costumes in the last several years will not be surprised that these images — culled from the Web sites of some of the largest Halloween costume retailers — are more strip club than storybook. Or that these and other costumes of questionable taste will be barely covering thousands of women who consider them escapist, harmless fun on Halloween....

Girls get kind of hosed on Halloween costumes. Everything is geared toward "sexy" and hardly enough is "scary." I don't have a problem with adults wanting to dress sexy, but the selection of women's costumes seems kind of slim.

The really gross thing is when I see costumes for elementary-schoolers that look more like the adult versions. The midriff-baring tops and mini-skirts that pass for witch costumes creep me out, and not in a good Halloweeny way.

I think Halloween costumes for little girls are kinda following the trends in clothing for little girls. It's amazing how difficult it can be to find clothes for a little girl that doesn't make her look like a total hooch. (This summer I bought some clothes for a friend's 3 year old and about had a stroke at the selection)

I just noticed that girls seem to have the options of pretty pink princess, pop star bimbo, and diva witch/vampire/etc., and that's about it. It's all frilly and in some cases a little risque, even the traditionally "scary" costumes. Boys have their choice of just about anything and girls get the fluffy skirted stuff. I don't remember the costumes being so gender-divided when I was a kid, but maybe that's just me.
