WTG, guy!!! We're kinda doing the opposite... you're consuming lots of lean meat and low carb vegetables, and i'm consuming no meat and high carbs and complex carbs.
I've lost about 30 lbs so far, and am looking forward to cracking into the 200's by the end of november or december...
WTG, Doc and CB!!! :smt038

This is really great! We watch The Biggest Loser and it makes me really upset that they have to go on television to be motivated to lose weight. I am really proud that you guys have the self motivation that it takes to lose the weight! I wish my Nana had the same motivation. CONGRATULATIONS!!!

I am actually only about 25-30 lbs overweight but I would like to loose like 35-40...I know I would feel better...I never weighed over 100 lbs in my life until after I became pregnant!

I've never weighed under 100 since 2nd grade. Probably won't again until I'm dead.

i went to the immediate care today with the early states of bhroncitis (however you spell it, i'm not a doctor :) )
they take my blood pressure, and it was 165/103.....i am assuming that is bad....
the other guy at work who had bhroncitis earlier this week also found his pressure was "high" and is starting to diet, so i am guessing that we will both be doing this "together"....
question is....is this south beach diet thing something that you buy the food to eat or do u just go by points like weight watchers?

with weight watchers, using points, you can basically eat candy bars and drink milk shakes... now, you're only going to eat a few of these, and maybe subsist on 'zero point foods', but it doesn't necessarily equate to health, only calorie/fat restriction. I'm not sure about SB's ability to lower blood pressure, but the weight loss wouldn't hurt.
Going vegan for me has got my blood pressure under control and I've stopped my meds for it and it's still remaining low. It's not for everyone, or most anyone, but it works great for me.
Cut out the fat, cut out the sugar, cut out the caffine, the nicotine and the salt, if you're salt sensitive to hypertension (only some people are, not everyone, don't beleive the hype). Cutting caffine and nicotine will do wonders. Both constrict blood vessels, thus increase blood pressure.
Right now my bp's running about 130/60...

Any suggestions from you guys (that are doing SO awesome with your weight loss) on how to motivate a family member to do the same? I have tried for YEARS to get my mother to lose weight. I've tried all I know... I don't care what she looks like, but heart disease runs in her family and I'd just like her to be alive to see grandchildren (which I will not be having anytime soon!). Any advise???
And congrats to all of you who are doing so good! Are y'all primarily dieting, or incorporating exercise as well?

heart disease is a western disease. it's unheard of in other parts of the world. It's a disease of diet, plain and simple. If she'll lower her total blood colesterol to below 150, heart disease won't be an issue. Now, getting her to give up stuff to get it that low, that's another story.
For me, the diet I'm on makes me want to exercise. It's weird, but I want to move all the time...
Very simply, you must lead by example. You cannot force anyone to diet, but if you let her know that you don't want her to die early, and you'd like her to live to see her grandchildren grow up, then that might influence her some. To me, there's no greater motivation than to think of my son growing up without a father or my wife being without me, and me without her.

You're exactly right CB. I smoked for 39 years. Never thought I could quit. Something "clicked" and I put them down and haven't picked one up in 4 years back June 16 of this year. Mind over matter. One day you'll be ready to diet and you will. Something will create that "spark" you mentioned.

165 over 103 isn't good. Not real bad either. Good time to see a GP and let him take care of you. You do not want to mess with high blood pressure.

Also, nothing fried and no fast food restaurants. Subs maybe. Fruit, lean meat and veggies until your appointment with that GP.

i ate subway last nite...the grilled chicken, and let me tell u, i hate chicken (partially because my girl only eats pultry, can't stand red meat, and after 4 years, i'm finally breaking down)
but anyways....i don't mind the fruit and veggies...but i'm at work and hard to bring something/go run and get something when mcd's and burger king is right down the road and oh so fast.....subway is always backed up......

 I've tried all that. My father and myself are very big on exercise and try to eat fairly well and encourage her to do the same. I'm worried if I wait for something to just "click" with her, then it'll just be too late :smt022
Expat in Korea
10-21-2006, 09:15 PM
I have lost about 65 pounds since coming to Korea over the last year or so with most of it falling off in the first 6 months. I did start working out, but I think mostly it was from giving up fast food and cutting way back on the fried food. Most of my meals are based around vegetables. With the meat portions being smaller. and for me it was a ton of rice and noodles.
