so about six months ago, we purchased this here house....

and in this here house, all the carpet is gone, the walls have a fresh coat of paint, and no baseboards yet....

in the fireplace, there are gas logs. Now, I am going to assume that the chimney is not a "real" chimney because thier is no fire door outside to gain access inside to clean the fire box part...

Now, there are a set of gas logs in the chimney, and i have a few questions---

1) these things are old and dusty, can i just take them outside, rinse them with the hose, and they be ok?

2) the burner line underneath looks a little rusted (like a BBQ grill that stays outside, gas powered)

3) Do these things give off heat? or should i just leave them be and let them just "look pretty" in the living room?

thanks everyone.....trying to get as much help with the "new gas" stuff since i grew up with electric....i am comfortable doing my own gas stuff since i did just do a gas water heater about 2 months ago....plus i am a shadetree mechanic and a pretty good carpenter......

carsales, are you on Wilmut gas? If I were you I would call the gas company and have them come take a look before I would use the logs..I would hate to see the house burn down because the logs were not safe. We had a fireplace in a previous house and it was set up to use logs or gas logs...we only ever used real logs but had a set of gas logs stored in the attic if we had wanted to use them.

We didn't have a firedoor on our chimney either because it was in the corner of the room but it was a real working fireplace...we had to clean it from the inside which could be messy at times...just be careful and check it out good before you start the logs.

i am with hank hill when it comes to heating, gas is better than logs anyday, unless you want to smell like a smoked turkey

for me, there's nothing better than the smell of burning wood on a crisp morning... I'm looking forward to waking up early in the morning and getting a fire started in my firebowl... watch the sunrise and bask in the warmth and aroma from some nice seasoned logs... ahhhhhhh......
