The weather channel lists no kind of advisories, and the radar is pretty clear for our area, so why is the HA reporting a winter weather advisory with freezing rain, sleet, and snow for this afternoon?

Jeff, thank goodness you're not one of the unfortunate still without power.
Absolutely. Many cities here (including Fort Collins) bury the majority of their power lines, so we don't lose power very often.

Boston: 3 degrees right now (with the wind chill). I want to go get a beer, but not freeze in the process.
When I went to bed at midnight last night, it hadn't started snowing yet. At 2:30 am, it was coming down good, the grass and roads were covered. When I woke up 30 minutes ago, the snow had already moved out of the area and the snowplows have passed by a couple of times. It looks so pretty outside.

It is so gloomy, dreary, dark, wet, nasty, yucky, etc. right now! I have every light in my house on just to avoid getting depressed!! LOL If only it were snow instead of rain - then we could build a fire and enjoy looking out the windows!
Well tomorrow night it will definately be cold enough for snow...expected lows for the area are supposed to be in the mid-20's according to desktop weather.

I have one of those deals that you heat in the microwave and put around your neck. That helps me get warm. However, you can make one with a pound of rice and a stretchy sock. Put the RAW rice in the sock, tie up the end of the sock, microwave for two or three minutes. It seems like if you can get your shoulders warm, you're more comfortable.

That was real interesting, fuzzis...thanks!
It is still sooooooo cold here. Had to drive about 20 miles down the highway to the orthodontist this morning. Left home, the sun was shining but very windy, it was blowing me all over the road. Halfway there, it looked like smoke in the distance. At first I thought a farmer was burning off a field, but then I got into it. No smoke, heavy snow. Just going from the car to the office about froze me. Wind chill is still at zero. I'll take 110° in the shdae any day over this.
OMG, was just listening to our local weather forecast. Tomorrow the windchill is going to be 20 below! During the day! :smt103 I'm gonna freeze.
I take back every bit of my whining. Just checked weather.com, hubby is going to Schofield, Wisconsin tomorrow...their forecast...tonight 16 below with windchill at 35 below, a high of 4 below tomorrow with daytime windchills of 35 below, 16 below again tomorrow night (air temp), and a high Monday of 1. :smt119

JMB, I can't even imagine how a wind chill that low feels. I know I wouldn't be able to breathe - I'd have asthma and would have to stay inside all the time! :)
The coldest I have ever been was in Wyoming. February 1998. Windchill made it something like -45. I didn't know that while I was out pumping gas. I was hopping around, thinking, "It's cold! It's ****ing cold!!" and when I got inside and heard the weather, I knew why. :smt118

Hey JMB, are you making it okay today? The pics I'm seeing on different sites in the north are absolutely incredible -- the cold is unbelievable. I tried to post a photo on the front page of foxnews.com. It should geese swimming in a lake that was so frigid, steam was rising from it. It looked like the geese were surrounded by smoky fog.
Just checking on you - hope you're staying inside and warm!
Making it just fine, QM. It's cold (12), getting colder tonight, and snow tonight or tomorrow. I had to get out a couple of times today but it wasn't too bad. The sun was shining and it wasn't very windy. I am sooooooooo ready for spring.
We're under a winter storm watch tonight and tomorrow. Not sure what we're going to get. We're just below the line of all snow, calling for freezing rain, 1/2 inch of ice first, then snow. Will just have to wait and see what morning brings. If I don't show up in the morning, that means we got ice and have no power. :(

Is it going to be bad weather all week?
fotno, the last I heard it is suppose to be bad weather after 9 tonite thru maybe late tomorrow afternoon...possible high wind, heavy rains and hail...Steve Taylor said it could change but he was looking for hail because of the cold temps aloft. Thunderstorms and possible tornadoes. I heard the same on several other channels so we will have to wait and see I suppose. :smt102 Who knows?
I just came in from outside with BooBoo and I saw alot of stars..according to the weather channel the bad weather is just moving into LA from Texas so it may be closer to morning before the storms get here. After the storms it is suppose to turn cold...low to mid 40's the next couple of days (starting Wed.) with lows in the 20's...It is get everybody sick weather...cold/hot/damp/cool etc. etc.

As far as the real bad stuff, I'm guessing we prolly won't get hit until between 4 to 6 AM. The big, bad squawl line appears to be crossing the southern TX/LA border rat now, ETA Natchez after midnight. Anyone else care to hazzard a guess?

Some loud booms here in OG around 0530-0545 but power is on and the downpours only lasted abt 15 mins. Now just distant rumbles from over HBG way. Too early for gunfire so must be thunder.

I would've slept right through it if it hadn't been for my bed partner, the lab. She usually sleeps at the foot, but is terribly afraid of bad weather. I woke up to her laying right next to me, pushing her feet so she could be as tight with me as she could. I pulled the quilt I have laying across the comforter over her and petted her a while. She went right to sleep.
To get back on topic... she is scared to death of weather. One time I found her "caved" in the closet during a bad thunderstorm with the tornado sirens going off. How do you dog folks get your pet to calm down? I've tried leaving the TV on, and that helps some. She was fine when she was younger, but we boarded her during Katrina because she was not an inside dog then because we were renting. So, I imagine that it's some sort of traumadic stress related to that.
Maggie-Doodle
02-13-2007, 01:05 PM
Sir Mickey, my first WFT was so afraid of storms she could predict them before the weather service. I found that if I wasn't going to be home, it would help if I crated her and turned on the radio. I would also close the drapes so she could not see the lightening. If I was home nothing would do except for me to hold her and talk to her. She stuck to me like glue...she would shake so bad you would have thought she had ceberal palsey or something...and slobber at the mouth like a mad dog. It is really sad to see them when they are like that. I got her when she was a pup and had her until she died (16) she never got any better with the weather frights.

Update: I was very glad to have the thermos of hot coffee ready after a short, un-restful night. Cat rousted me out about 8:30 for his breakfast and there was my coffee all done!
Looking at the Times-Picayune online this morning, looks very bad in NO, my old neighborhood got socked hard (Riverbend/Uptown) and there was a fatality in Gentilly. Those FEMA trailers are not tornado-worthy. What a mess.
Sir Mickey, your are correct to believe that your lab probably has trauma related to the hurricane. My mother's dog got stuck outside our house in a thunderstorm as a puppy and for the rest of his life he would hide shaking under the couch when the sky started to ge dark. On the other end of the spectrum, my dog wants to play outside during the rain and thunder. Last night, she stayed stretched out in the bed as always - oblivious. Who knows? Some dogs are petrified and some dogs could care less.

The difference here is the humidity. In Alaska we have a very dry cold and it seems when it's this cold it chills me right to the bone....so I've decided it really is colder here than in Alaska!

The wind blew out the pilot on my water heater and it was dripping water, but I had to leave it this morning. Got a church friend to come over and relight it while ago, but there's still a little drip. I have an awful feeling that this water heater wants a new one jacked up under it . . . argghh.
Instead of being mad at WDAM, I was just grateful that the leaning pine tree in my neighbor's yard didn't come down, and that there was no damage around here. Anymore these scary winds are hard to get through, and I'm always happy when nothing bad happens. In this case, the "tail" of that system seemed to be lifting north faster than it was moving west, and we were spared. Others were not so fortunate.

True, the weather folks got all worked up (and got some of us worked up, too...I even broke out the battery operated TV and checked the batteries in the flashlights), but it turned out to be a weather non-event for us in the Pine Belt. Thank goodness!
Since Katrina I have looked at "bad weather" differently. I have decided I would rather err on the side of caution and be prepared.
Part of being prepared was having a dozen pine trees (the ones Katrina left either standing or leaning) removed from my yard last year.
There are lots of trees in the Pine Belt that may be left standing, but the bending they suffered in Katrina left them weakened and vulnerable to winds. That will continue to be a concern until they all eventually come down, either by man or by Mother Nature.

Me getting MAD at wdam would be like getting mad at a speck of dust out on the lawn,I,like a lot of other people i know ,pay no attention to wdam in the least, but the day they said it was going to be bad weather,I checked other websites and they all said we could expect a rain shower, possible bad weather but not likely, they were right.

boy, wdam was right again,is everybody okay?boy that was rough,at first light i am going to get my gear together and start searching through all the ruins for survivors,my electricity is still on, so if there are anymore out there who will help me with my rescue efforts please pm me,I have never seen devastation like this before, those straightline winds were almost as bad as they said they would be,god help us all.
I believe if we all pull together and pool our resources,we can overcome this disaster.
we got hit real hard on the ave's,there is small mudpuddle in my front yard as we speak,we got at least a quarter inch of rain and the wind gusts where well over 4 miles an hour,I don't know how we pulled through, but i would like to thank wdam for it's early warning,If I had not listened to them, who knows what would have happened to us.bless you wdam,BLESS YOU!
Godspeed, Big John. Godspeed.
Your friend,

Hey, John. Let's not start rumors about Shawn O'Hara.

Not necessarily to defend the local weather folks but I was up watching the radar as the "storm" came through. It was really sort of weird because the radar was showing severe storms right up until it got to Hattiesburg. All of that orange, yellow and red on the radar parted and only green (mild rain) came through our area. Others in the southeast did not fare quite as well.

Really people ... this is a little tired. And I know I'm going to be flamed like hell for speaking my mind about it. But lay off the damn weather people. There is nothing exact about any of the atmospheric sciences, especially forecast models and methods. And, considering the Law of Averages, there will likely never be much improvement. Much like you'll never prove so-called "global warming" to me. Life on Earth is simply the period between ice ages. Gotta warm up to cool off.
I fly, so weather briefs have to be to real damn good. Period. But nobody gets it 100% right on any day in my experience (now 4730 hours in multi-engine, 5400+ overall).
Think whatever you want to about WDAM's coverage or whoever else's. That's your business.
But go back and look at the Weather Service's thoughts about Saturday's weather. The Storm Prediction Center got it wrong, too, according to some of you folks. And there are few people more qualified than the SPC to forecast severe storms.
As the saying goes: "Everybody complains about the weather ..."

As the saying goes: "Everybody complains about the weather ..."The only point i was coming to is,I predicted it right on the money,I told my family and friends what was going to happen and it did.I just think the people who get paid for forecasting the weather ought to do it a little better than someone like me,but they can't.
I will talk about any GD THING I WANT TO TALK ABOUT AND IF YOU OR ANYONE WHO LOOKS LIKE YOUdoesn't like it you,AINT GOTTA READ IT!
fact is wdam said to expect 60 mph winds 60 and 5 is a big diference, they didn't even come close.WDAM SUCKS!I hope if you are too tired, you aint reading this.

I agree. They all talk about this "Doppler" "pin-point" radar gear they got. You'd think they could get a little bit closer. I think some of them just like to interrupt good TV to see themselves in prime time. Woody Asaff was as good as most of these guys, and he just used chalk for his forecasts.

I do want to point out one little thing about the weather from Saturday as people talk about how wrong everybody got the forecasts...
It DID storm terribly. Destructive tornadoes and horrible thunderstorms "across the outlook region." Our forecast office is most often Jackson, sometimes Mobile or New Orleans for certain areas. The Jackson forecast office DID have tornadoes and severe storms. EF-1 tornadoes in Rankin and Neshoba counties. Windgusts to 45 MPH at the Hattiesburg Laurel airport. Hail reports throughout the area. I am usually the one screaming for WDAM to do better, but the forecasts were right for the most part. The system just fell apart as it got closer to our area, thank God!
