DuPree to be part of COPS panel (http://www.hattiesburgamerican.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061023/NEWS01/61023018)
From staff reports
Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree will be discussing police recruiting strategies with a national audience at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
He is part of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services roundtable discussion called Hiring Top Cops: Strategies for Success. DuPree is the only non-law enforcement official included on the five-person panel.
To view the Internet broadcast, visit the Justice Department’s Web site at www.dojconnect.com (http://www.dojconnect.com/). Viewers must complete a free registration before taking part.
DuPree, who is in Washington for the discussion, will return to Hattiesburg on Wednesday.
So, his part will be to tell everyone how not to do it?
Gimme a frickin break.

Ahh, I just realized that some of you think Washington is being run better than Hattiesburg. All of this time, I thought they were about the same and perfect bedfellows.

It's kinda like having the captain of the Exxon Valdez on a panel speaking about "good navigational techniques".
Or Mark Foley on a panel about "How to pick up girls".
Or Bill Clinton on a panel about "how to pick a dry cleaner".
You get the picture.

Maybe He'll speak on how to covertly downsize your police force, while taking the burden of criminality off of the downtrodden & repressed gangs in your area.

Does he just try to find a reason to go out of town?
Surely they didn't have to recruit 1,000 miles away for a panel member.

Recruiting is fine and good, but once you get the officers there, if they don't have the support of the administration then the revolving door continues. Thoses officers will look somewhere else for work, some may even get disallusioned with law enforcement and do something else.
Suggested questions.............
What is your average cost of training and annual certification for an individual officer?
What would be considered an acceptable rate of turn over and average years of service for your law enforcement department?
What are the most effective motivational recruitment tools that you use to develop an experienced staff?
Is there an outflow or inflow of officers to other state agencies or private sector jobs in your region and what the major contributing factors are?
Any body else please join in!!!

Whee!
Loved the question about rate of turnover.
How about:
How long should a floundering Chief of Police be allowed to try to turn things around? When should the chief executive cut his or her losses and replace an ineffective chief of police with someone else?
Who should bear responsibility for an ineffective police department? The Chief of Police? The Mayor? Where does the buck stop?
Can you blame the employees for poor performance by a police department? (No police commander worth his or her salt will ever place blame on the employees.)
And, whoever logs in, usually your location is known even if your name isn't. If there are a lot of critical question sfrom HBG, the word will get around the table, even if only amongst the attendees. There will be a few jokes at JD's expense in the Georgetown bars tonight.

well, as grandmother would say, "cut me off and call me shorty". ridiculous to say the least. hattiesburg is a pivotal city and can not attract enough police to protect and serve her citizens - residents and visitors. we have a wealth of qualitied people, this says a bit about the city's leadership.
