Driving up 49 tonight, I saw the new Hattiesburg Police Mobile Command Center parked in front of the University Inn. It's a large, well-equipped RV.

I wonder if they bought it from Frank Melton?

I told yall Hattiesburg was taking the same path as Jackson....in more ways than one.

I hope they opted for the super heavy duty springs and shocks. And a built-in donut maker.

No donut maker but they have reached an agreement with Shipleys to raise the clearance of the drive-thru to allow for RV's.

I thought I saw that thing about 2 years ago parked over at the fire dep't on North 39th ave. It stayed there about a week. Is this the same one?

So if we take a similar path as Jackson, I just can't picture Dupree with a sledge hammer takine down a drug house.

With the mobile command center I wonder the basics who, what ,when, where and how?

Wouldn't you be duplicating the shift commander's and dispatchers? Last I heard HPD doesn't have enough to spare manpower. Or is this another shell game or smoke and mirrors to distract people from foundational problems?

Daisy the only picture I get is one of Dupree with a claw hammer helping build one.

Well, it was something with HPD that was there. It was a huge rv.

I heard the narcotics unit seized a motorhome a few months ago, they may have converted it and put it to work cleaning up the town.

The Hattiesburg Police Department showed off a new crime-fighting tool today that officials hope will beef up its response capabilities and raise the department’s profile in the city’s neighborhoods.

The $270,000 mobile command unit of the Southeast Regional Response Team was paid for through an $800,000 Homeland Security grant, city spokesman John Brown said.

“We’re very excited about getting a piece of equipment that’s really going to enhance public safety for all areas of the city,” Hattiesburg Police Chief David Wynn said. “It has all the equipment necessary to operate independently of police headquarters.”

my question is: Who's going to drive it? Are you just going to set it up in a neighborhood and leave it there and hope it deters crime? Like the mobile radar that tells you how fast you're going and doesn't issue a ticket?

aren't those things kinda slow getting up to speed?

just a thought......

also, i don't think that the impalas, crown vics, and intrepids can be dingy towed......maybe with a dolly tho.......

With the number of officers dwindling, it could become a mobile police station...

to have a mobile police station, you have to have officers that aren't on the verge of quitting..............

Mobile Command Center? Man, they might as well be looking at the plans for a nuclear bomb. How the hell they gone know what to do with that thing?

I wonder if it may be a Mobile Command Center like the MHP has and used during Katrina. If so, we can only guess where it would be parked if a catastrophe like Katrina comes our way again.

SoMissTV

It was on the 6pm news.

It's very nice, and features a camera on a telescoping mast. I noticed that the mast has a D-Tec safety system, but this mast has the potential to kill people if the operator doesn't understand how to use it.

Most probably the new mobile command center will be placed in a more central area of town when needed. Usually mobile command centers are used for emergency operations and has several desk areas for supervisors on duty and has a mobile dispatch center. If the city would have had a command center during and after Katrina, dispatch would not have been in such a mess...the dispatch center at the p.d. was pretty much wiped out by the storm.

The p.d. used to have a large trailer (Katrina style) that was nice and was used as a mobile command center. It of course was pulled with a pick-up truck but was rather roomy..we used to use it during the holidays. They would usually park it in front of Wal-Marts on 98....citizens could come there to file reports during the holidays and alot of businesses would come there to file reports of shoplifting etc. It was especially helpful for the merchants west of Hwy 49. They would not have to fight Hardy St. traffic to go to the p.d. to file reports or sign affadavits during the holiday season. The center would be manned by a clerk and the officers on duty in that part of town would swing in to do reports etc.

there are very few people around that know about the mississippi state guard. they are a bunch of older retired vets and work for free during all kinds of disasters. they are state military who are at the call of the govenor and under the direct control of the adjuant general of the ms. national guard. the 3rd bridgade is here in hattiesburg and i happen to be the ex. officer. i've been with them for the past 16 years. katrina taught us a great lesson. we will never be caught without communications again. we have many ham radio operators in our unit and there are a lot scattered across the state that are not members. thanks to the sea b's base in gulfport, we now have a mobil command center and about 40 hand held units. all of the stations have thier own power source and when set up, we will have communications state wide and also to other states. we have been trained in disaster control, mass feeding, and housing. we have offered our help for many years and have been used very little. hattiesburg emergency management has used us some over the years, but we are here for everyone. just like any military org. we must get our orders from jackson and the national guard. if any of you would like to be a part of this, and you need no prior military experince, p.m. and i will be glat to talk to you.

A mobile command post is a nice piece of equipment to have. The real question is will it get used for anything other than window dressing? Maggie mentions its utility for holiday season and that's fine, as is its use for emergencies that require evacuation of the Dispatch center.

Those are pretty rare, though. Once a year plus once every (hopefully) many years. LAPD uses (or at least used to use) theirs to get into troubled neighborhoods with lots of personnel and provide support to those personnel.

Here's a suggestion. Get probation, parole, juvenile counselors, school counselors, police, etc. to work out of the CP in a troubled neighborhood for a month or two. Bring police AND social services to those who may have difficulty in getting to them. How about a mobile clinic and bookmobile at the same time and place?

I'm not saying the mobile command post is a bad idea, its more like a necessity for a city the size of HBG. But... it can be either kept under glass for emergencies or it can be used, often and creatively. Either way, it's $800K with a useful life of ten years or so.

Lets see... ten holiday seasons and maybe, two dispatch evacuations in those ten years? Cost to the taxpayers $800,000/12 = $66,667 per use. The more it gets used the more it will be worth to the city.

Maxim, I agree with you...it is a good thing that HPD got the mobile command center....as you stated I hope they use it and not just place it in the vehicle impound yard and look at it...sadley that is pretty much what happened with the old command center once Wynn was in charge.

It would be a shame for the government to have spent that kind of money and get little use of it. That is like the robot they got several years ago...it could enter places and crime scenes that was too dangerous for officers to go...it had all kinds of cameras on it etc etc. I don't remember them ever using it after the promo they had on it...I doubt there is anyone there now who was trained on HOW to use it...it would be interesting to know IF they even have it anymore....where the thing is kept etc. etc.

I think they entered that robot into a robot wars competition. I believe it got a beatdown from the gang member's robots. There were like 30 of them, all gathered around the HPD robot, and it didn't have any backup.

If the cops already have radios & cell phones & a dispatcher to coordinate their effortswhat is the point of a "Mobile command" thingy.
What does it do?
How does it enhance the officers' performance?
And why doesn't it have a donut maker?

i like the camera thing....

park this huge a$$ rv with hattiesburg police all over it, then let up the camera to get a tag number.....

not like driving by in a undercover car won't do the trick.......

I say it is a waste of money-we need MEN (officers) not command centers. If you have a decent city administration they would handle things properly with what they have. A decent city administration has enough man-power to handle just about anything.

lol omg, you guys are killing me with your donut, weight, and lack of officer comments. Funny but so true and to the point. Having good gear, weapons, and tools are great, but if you do not have the man power, training, and desire to push forward, it is all for nothing. Maybe they plan on using it for a "Public Relations Booth", or maybe a "Kids Day Out" vehicle.
