Chicken George is the name that my kids have given the guy that rides around town on the little red scooter. I have no idea what his real name is.
Anyone know this guy's story? I have often found myself in the enviable position of getting stuck behind him where I can't pass. He does seem to get around though, I have seen him throughout Petal and even in some parts of Hattiesburg.

from what i understand....his name is george, last name i don't know.......
he bought a scooter after getting a DUI, and since you don't have to have a DL to drive a scooter, he bought one and keeps going to this day..............
i'm sure he just keeps the scooter because of MPG, etc. etc. i have seen him in h'burg, not out west, but over on hardy, etc. that thing can get up to 45 MPG, but i think he just drives slow because he can....
from what i understand also, if you mess with him, he will throw somthing at your car......i don't know if all this is true, but it is a story that was told to me when i was in high school dating a girl from petal............

Oh, man, Chicken George... where to begin...
I much prefered him when he rode his orange bicycle. He'd dress up in his best 70's era suit and pedal around... it was so cool seeing him every day.
He lives on the road at the end of Kelly Rose Lane that comes out by the Leeville Community Center. His house is snowball shack green. The reason he got his name 'Chicken' is because he used to have chickens in his yard, thus 'Chicken George'... I'm not sure what his last name is, or if George is even his real name.
However, he once came to my business to get a burger. That was the hardest sale, and after he bought it, he stuck it in his glad bag for later. I swear, it took 20 minutes of talk to get him to decide on something.
I don't know where he works, or what he does to afford those scooters he has. I've heard that one time some rednecks trapped him on the bypass bridge and threw his scooter into the Leaf, although I'm not sure of the accuracy or truthfulness of that story... just a story I've heard.
I do know that I HATE being stuck behind him. He won't let you go around, and that scooter tops out at about 29mph, and that's going downhill. Uphill he gets about 15mph.

He has been called Chicken George for many many years but whatever you do don't call him that. He will throw objects at your car including 2x4s, I know I saw him do it to two kids that kept riding by him and calling him names when he was walking on Kelly Rose Lane one day. But his real name is James Gordon and if you treat him right he's not that bad of a person, just challenged.

Does he work anywhere? I see him riding around at different hours of the day but don't really see him doing much of anything.
The only time I have ever been around him close enough to hear him speak he was talking to some of the student workers at Sunflower telling them that they needed to grow and and get a real job. I thought that was sort of ironic. :smt102

When I worked for Airbourne Express back in the early 90's I remember seeing him riding a bike. I remember we use to call him "I ain't crazy" because he supposely said that one day. That is man timeless:smt038 We would see him in Oak Grove in the morning and then through our radios, we would have "i aint crazy sightings" all day. There was a rumor he was rich.

Chicken George (aka James Gordon) was one of my first customers when I opened my bicycle business in Petal in 1984. He actually went through a series of bicycles in those years. He would always paint the entire bike orange and place yellow and orange soda straws in the spokes. I too miss the vintage hair and leisure suits he would parade through Petal.
The life of James Gordon is a telling commentary on our society. Here was an extremely physically fit young man in his early 20's who became convinced that he was disabled. I'm not a medical doctor nor a psychiatrists but I've witnessed the physical endurance of James as I replaced tire after tire on his bicycles. I've also had enough dealings with him one on one to believe that there were probably many productive occupations at which he could have succeeded.
While it is good that our society makes provisions for those truly disabled, in doing so we also deny a few truly able bodied folks the valuable sense of self reliance that gives most of us a reason to get out of bed each day. I can't say that James Gordon falls into this category but I can say that he made multiple applications to achieve his disabled status and did so with the coaching of some who charge for their services.
As to the plethora of stories about encounters with "Chicken George", I find it revealing that they typically begin with an unprovoked taunting or harassment as he bicycled the streets of the friendly city. Now that I recall some of those stories, perhaps he has in fact earned his "crazy" checks. James Moore

Man, I can picture myself in the 3rd person, sitting in the back seat, no seatbelt on in those days, with my nose pressed against the window and watching Chicken George on his orange bicycle and his vintage suits... sweating in the summer sun, asking my mother why he was dressed that way... I wonder if he knows how many people can name him.
I swear, if I ever write a book, I'm going to put Chicken George in it...

at first i was gonna start a thread to see who this fellow was, and then i found this thread, so many questions are already answered for me!
this past friday a.m., i went to hardee's on my way to work (about 7:40) and went inside. the young girl behind the counter who waited on me was probably about 19 or 20 years old, VERY, VERY outgoing, smiling, cheerful, funny, friendly, etc., etc. After she took my order, i was waiting to the side, and in comes the fellow with his BIG helmet AND GOGGLES on! (now i know it is Chicken George) the goggles are the clear plastic ones that cover half of ur face that u can buy for $1 at the $ store, and really do look a little funny. i can't hear much of his or her conversation, but i could tell that she started out very friendly, cheerful, etc., etc., as with me and all the other customers. evidently she must have made a joking remark about his goggles or helmet, because he then told her something LIKE, "i'm telling you now, don't mess with me, just get my order and leave me alone!" at first, i think she thought he was kidding, and she kind of joked back w/him still kinda smiling, and then he was really stern in what he said as he told her something like "i'm just warning you -- just take my order and don't say anything else!"
well, u could see all of the color drain from that young girl's face, and the smile completely disappeared, and u could see the hurt look in her eyes. it was really devastating to know that those few words he said to her could break her spirit that morning. i could hardly stand it. after i got my order, i walked up to the end of the counter beside her (AND beside chicken george) and patted her on the arm and told her "Have a Good Day!" and smiled real big at her and turned my eyes in his direction. i was trying to tell her not to let one a**hole ruin her day and her spirit.
as i was starting to get in my car which was parked up against the sidewalk right where u go in and out of hardee's, chicken george came out and proceeded to walk to his moped. i just couldn't stand it and said, "are u that rude to EVERY1?" he never turned his head in my direction, never mumbled a word, never stopped walking. it really ticked me off, and then i said, "you really ought to be ASHAMED of urself!". once again, no acknowledgement whatsoever, he just kept walking.
i know that it wasn't really my place to say anything and get involved, but it really p*ed me off. there are so few workers at all of these fast food places these days who really seem to care about their job, and who try to be friendly to the customer, that when i do come across some1 like this young girl, i don't tend to forget them that easily, as they make me remember what the "norm" in those places USED to be, and made me realize that there are still those out there that DO try to make ur experience a pleasant one.
from now on, Chicken George will be known to me as "Chicken Sh*t George", and he will get no sympathy or kindness from me whatsoever. i only hope he heard my words and realized what HIS words had done to that young girl. i know he could care less, but maybe, deep down somewhere....

I've only had one personal experience with Chicken George and it left me believing that the man was a little 'off'. He wasn't unpleasant, and we were selling him a burger, but he made it a chore, and I'm sort of glad he's not a regular customer, although I would appreciate his money if he decided to drop by on any given day.
Anyhow, I'm glad he didn't go apeshit on you. I think people should say stuff to people like this, and I've found myself more inclined to do it as I age, I can't imagine how much I'll be doing it when I'm your age... Gotta be careful, though, cause there are some real psycho's out there.. trust me, I got sucker punched by one, one day, over something I didn't even do... just came up and next thing I know, the ambulance is there...

kinda reminds me of this guy:
http://www.dailycognition.com/index.php?subaction=showfull&id=1172709062&archive=&start_from=&ucat=&
A 100 year old British man told on Wednesday how he fought off a gang of teenage muggers using "kung fu".
After a night at the pub, Buster Martin began to head home. On his way home Buster Martin showed that, even at 100, he still knew how to handle himself when he was confronted by the teenagers after a night at the pub.
Whether it was the alcohol or nerves of steel, the World War II veteran (Buster joined the Grenadiers during WWII and fought in Burma, Belgium and France) scared his three attackers so much they fled empty-handed.
Mr Martin was interviewed by police yesterday about the incident in Denmark Hill, South London, last Thursday night.
Mr Martin, a car washer-cum-mechanic for a plumbing firm, said: 'They just came at me and pushed me against a wall and tried to take my money from me.
'Then they pushed me on the floor and I went mad. I was lashing out on the floor and then I stood up and was kicking them all.
'I pushed one and kung fu kicked the other one between the legs and he let out a scream. They ran off scared after I did that and I still had all my money.'

When I was growing up in Petal, we saw him all the time, we lived just off Old Richton Road near Beverly Hills gas station. He threw a rock at someone we know one time, of course, I think they blew their horn at him because he wouldn't get off the road, so, think whatever you want. I always that he looked kinda like a pimp, in that suit, but NO pimp would be caught on a scooter, right? And yes, we called him Chicken George when I was a kid, and I'm 33 now. But I remember an old man that used to ride a three wheeled bike in Petal, near the old Country Kitchen, he as a vet or something, anyone remember him?
I was behind CG in line at the Shell station in Petal the other day, and he was paying for 52 cents of gas. The clerk said he had bought 16 cents that morning, and went all day on that. How far he went, I don't know, but you know he gets around.
I drive a very fuel efficient car, but I gotta admire anyone who's found a way to go all day on less than a buck-- regardless of why he does it.
As for him being kind of rude to people or being quick to snap, I wouldn't be so quick to fault him. He's probably been messed with more than his fair share over the years.

James Gordon came into my place of business yesterday. First time in a long time that he had stopped by. He told me of his surgery and looked like he was pretty much recovered.
After a little small talk he invited me out to the parking lot to show me his scooter. I looked at the speedometer and saw that he has over 22,000 miles on the odometer. Then I noticed the top speed readout was 40MPH.
I asked James how fast the scooter would actually go and he said "40". I then asked why he never went past 25 and he replied that he ALWAYS went 40. Thinking he was reading from the smaller kilometer scale, I tried to show him how he could be going 40 KPH and not 40 MPH. He assured me that he knew the difference and always went 40 MPH. That's when the discussion got interesting.
*Before I proceed, let me clarify that I don't make light of those who may be disadvantaged mentally or otherwise but I do find the interactions fascinating.
James began to explain his theory of relativity as it applies to speed in his case. He said that 40 MPH on a scooter was different than 40 MPH in a car because the car was heavier than a scooter and had 4 wheels instead of two. Owning two motorcycles myself I agreed that 25 MPH on a motorcycle could feel like 40 MPH in a car but James corrected me to say that the same 40 on a scooter was a DIFFERENT speed than the 40 in the heavier 4 wheeled car. It was at this point that James bushy mustache combined with his slightly larger forehead and twinkle in his eye began to take on the appearance of Einstein on the verge of a new mathematical revelation.
So just to restate our premise, I looked at James and asked, "So you're saying that if I'm driving in my car and you're traveling right alongside me on your scooter then you're actually going faster on your scooter than I'm going in my car?" James eyes lit up like those of a teacher who just saw the light of understanding shine from his star pupil and said "Exactly!"
In light of some of my own recent political discussions and subsequent decisions, I figured I was in no position to challenge James on his theory of relative speed. He may be onto something.

Mr. Moore, thank you so much for sharing that enlightening and entertaining story! It is funny, but at the same time, we get a glimpse into his thought process and perhaps a little better understanding of James Gordon...

My pleasure Baloo. Spending a little time with the James Gordons of our community can give us a better understanding of ourselves.

I always get a good giggle out of seeing that big grin on his face that just seems to come out of nowhere as he is blazing down the street. I have never spoken to him, but always enjoy seeing him out there.

I've found all of this thread interesting. I noticed CG today on his new blue scooter. He was going up Lynn Ray Road so I took the left on Leeville Road just not to be behind him. He certainly is a Petal icon. I had a friend who lived close near him off of Kelly Rose Lane and she said that he was called "Romeo". My boys called him Chicken George as long as 12 years ago and I would chide them and tell them how unkind it was, but there it is. That's how people identify him.

I know what you mean, when my 9 year old was about 7 we passed James one day on Old Richton Rd and my son spouted out "there's Chicken George"!! When I asked him where he had learned that name he quickly responded "thats what all the kids on the school bus call him". I didnt realize he was that popular.
I saw him about two days ago-- I think it was over on W. Pine. He had a passenger!

Dollfus, Its Preston Pittman. He has made probably a million bucks selling turkey calls he designs himself, making personal appearances and conducting workshops throughout America. He's just a good ole country boy and well-known and liked throughout these parts. Turkey hunting is big down here.
