Hi-
My husband and I have decided to accept a job opportunity in the Hattiesburg area. Even though we are only moving from LA, we are not too familiar w/ the Hattiesburg area, so I came here to get some more info.
Can anyone tell me some good areas to start looking for a home? We're interested in new construction or newer exisiting homes, and good schools are important, too.
Thanks for any advice.

Petal... try Petal or Western Hattiesburg, also known as Oak Grove. I wouldn't buy a home within the city limits of Hattiesburg, and I wouldn't send my kids to Hattiesburg Public Schools...
If you want new construction and great schools, Petal and Oak Grove are the answers.

I have heard Dixie which is south of Hattiesburg has good schools or my friends think so.
Welcome to My Hattiesburg.

Petal has really good schools and there are a ton of new construction homes right now. They are developing a couple of new subdivisions. You might be able to get a little more house for your money in Petal.
Oak Grove is the other part of Hattiesburg most people live. There is a ton of shopping out that way but the traffic is heck.
I guess it depends on where you work and how far you drive to your work. You can PM me if you want.
Welcome!

I would suggest Timberton. It is in the city limits...which gets u fire and police, (for what its worth). It also has great access to an interstate exchange which makes getting to the busy west side of the city pretty easy. As for schools, our kids go to Presbyterian Christian School....PCS. I would post the links, but it's not allowing me since I've only posted a couple of times. However, I'll put them in w/o the 3w's.

Oak Grove is still peaceful but traffic in some areas can be tough. Still, it depends where your commute takes you. From some places Richburg Rd. brings you just about downtown with little traffic. Oak Grove Rd. is always busy, it seems.
Traffic in Oak Grove doesn't begin to compare with REAL city traffic. I would guess when you said you were only coming from LA you meant Louisiana. If you meant Los Angeles, forget it. There's nothing anywhere around here you would even remotely consider to be "traffic."

Is that Lower Alabama or Los Angeles?
Welcome either way.

Three suggestions. Petal, Petal, and Petal. One of the top schools in the state supported by a community that passed a bond issue with over 96% voter support.
Over a dozen new subdivisions under construction and now with the opening of the Evelyn Gandy Parkway, less than 15 minutes away from anywhere you'd want to be in the surrounding area.
My sister is a realtor working for a firm specializing in the Petal area. Not trying to be commercial, just helpful.

I've found the best thing about the EGP is getting onto Monroe rd. That's quicker to the area of Hattiesburg I'm going to than taking it all the way out to 59... took 6 minutes off my daily commute... that and completely eliminates the danger of being caught by a train on the bypass...

Welcome! Moved here ten years ago, after six years in N.O. You'll like it a lot better. You can get good king cake, Community coffee and crawfish. Those were the only reasons to ever live in Louisiana anyway. Of course the car tags are killer, but the trade off for that is good roads.
One thing you need to know: here they call turnips "roots" and they call turnip greens "turnips" -- it took me two years to figure that one out.

Hey again! 543-listguy would be a great help to you in your house hunt! The rest of the gang is right in saying Petal or Oak Grove are nice areas! Lamar County property taxes are also a little lower. (Or at least they used to be)
