Tully, you may be able to answer this question. Why is one lane blocked on the bridge on Chappell Hill Road? It's been like that for a few days and doesn't look like they are doing any work on it. Is it structual or something? TIA for any info.

There's a post about this on the HA forums...
something about a bad support on the bridge.

You had it, it's structural. They noticed that the bridge was starting to sag the other day on one side and a piling was deteriorating. Probably due to the Dunn Roadbuilder trucks using it during the EGP paving operation.

I don't go to HA forums. Thanks. I figured someone would know.

That bridge has been slated for replacement for a couple of years now. They have mainly been waiting on the funding to come through and for additional right-of-way acquisition.
The bridge pilings are very unstable and I would not recommend driving over it more than absolutely necessary. The city has made efforts to stabilize it but I would suspect that the barricades will stay until it is replaced.

It was partly that and partly due to trucks hauling Katrina debris. The original problems started a couple of years ago when some kids tried to set at least one of the pilings on fire.

That was really smart. Did they catch them? I hope my kids don't try and do something stupid like that one day.
I'm just really glad they caught it. Could have resulted in a bad accident. I get scared going over bridges anyway. I about have a fit going to NO. I have to close my eyes and not look. I know that's silly.

I am not real sure that I trust my own memories on that one but it seems that I remember the county Supervisors discussing that as the start of the problems a while back.
I bet that Bobby Pickett could set the record straight though.

Thats good enough for me Tully, as long as they're going to fix it I'm happy.
I saw Bobby in his yard yesterday when I passed by, looked like he was putting up decorations.
Time for me to go to bed...thanks all.

I lived on Chappell Hill Rd for 6 years I'm so glad they are getting to that old bridge.I had called several times walking in the area I've been under it with my step children and the bridge shook so hard I just knew as old as it was it would buckle one day with all the big trucks that destroy our Roads in Petal.Hey Moore lets enforce the law on weight limit in town.Good job your doing there James this was just one of my issues so glad this was posted.

Speaking of weight limits, as soon as EGP is open to 42 we will prohibit trucks from using North and South Main street except for local deliveries. Already you can detect some slight wavering in the pavement that did not exist when the job was completed. James Moore

I don't enjoy going over bridges either. Walking or driving. I don't think it's all that silly, but then again, I'm partial. ;)

That bridge should have cost about 50,000 to replace but the sole bid that came in was about 170,000. We refuse to be abused at the tax payer's expense just because it's a heyday for contractors with all the reconstruction still going on.
We've had our engineers take a second look and consider an approach that allows us to reuse some of the concrete framework of the bridge as the problems are primarily with the pilings. James Moore

You and me both, sister. Deeply bridge phobic, tho I do better driving than riding. My car died on the Causeway once with a huge ole land-yacht barreling towards me and I couldn't climb over the console to get out. He pulled over at the last minute. Had the shakes forever.

I always think about the next new madrid fault earthquake hitting when I'm going across a long bridge... You know it's coming, you don't know when, and you know the only thing holding 1/2 our bridges up is friction.

CB, the worst was sitting on the bottom level of the Bay Bridge in SF, in rush hour traffic. Earthquake fear meets bridge fear! Told God, get me off this thing and I'll be so good You won't even know it's me.

Thanks for letting us all know. I use that bridge everyday going to work and all. So I will go all the way through town because I don't want to be the one on the bridge when it gives way. Thanks a lot. :)

Glad I saw this thread this a.m. I was actually driving behind a really big pickup truck the other day on that road from EGP... he was going SOOOOO slow to begin with and then he just stopped in the middle of the road! Well, being the impatient driver I am I honked at him. Then I felt really bad when I realized he HAD to stop b/c half the bridge was blocked off and traffic was coming in the other direction! I felt so bad & wished I could have apologized to him. They need some sort of caution light or warning before you actually come up to the bridge. They may have it now, but didn't last week...
somewhat off topic but, my friend-boy is closing on the house he's buying in Petal today! Guess I may be out that way more often now. So y'all be sure to keep me up to date on the Petal scoop ;)

They have a sign coming up Chappel Hill from EGP but it is a small orange sign that is very easily missed. They need a blinking light or something. Coming through there at night is kind of dangerous if you don't know it's there.
Glad you'll be spending more time in the Friendly City!!

i appreciate the info, jimmy, but any ideas on when it might be fixed? some of my family lives on James St and were curious. it is kind of frustrating to have to go around sometimes, depending on where they are wanting to go, but they (and i) understand that it has to be fixed first!

I'll try to get an update at Monday's meeting. At this point, much depends on the ability of the engineers to find a less costly solution than total bridge replacement. James Moore

The new plan to repair the bridge on Fifth Street is now up for bid. The new design will reuse part of the structure and hopefully bring the bids within a more reasonable price range.
With the bid process and then the construction time, we are likely still months from a fix. James Moore
