Hattiesburg – A senior advisor and economist in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will spearhead a health lecture sponsored by the University of Southern Mississippi on Thursday, Sept. 21, in the Thad Cochran Center Room 218 A, located on the Hattiesburg campus. Dr. Vilma Carande-Kulis will discuss “Public Good and Externalities in Public Health: The Need for Public Health Economics” from 1:15 - 2:15 p.m. The Argentina native’s visit is part of the 2006-2007 Scholar Series sponsored by the College of Health at Southern Miss. The lecture is free and open to the public.Carande-Kulis, who holds degrees in rangeland economics, engineering, ecology, elementary teaching and music, has worked with the CDC since 1997. One major area of her research focuses on the development of evidence of economic efficiency of public health interventions, and the application of public economic principles to public health. Carande-Kulis has received many awards over the years for her work including the CDC Epidemiology Program Office Achievement Award and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary’s Award for Distinguished Service. “We are excited to have a speaker of Dr. Carande-Kulis’ diverse expertise as our inagural speaker for this year’s Scholars Series,” said coordinator Dr. Susan Hubble Burchell, associate professor within Southern Miss’ Department of Human Performance and Recreation. “Her topic is timely particularly for citizens and health professionals in our state.” Before joining the CDC, Carande-Kulis was a policy analyst and instructor in the College of Agricultural and Resource Economics at Colorado State University.
