Southern Miss University Libraries to Hold Used Book Sale to Assist Coast LibrariesHattiesburg -- To aid in the recovery from Hurricane Katrina, University Libraries at the University of Southern Mississippi will sponsor a used book sale Monday, Sept. 18 – Friday, Sept. 22 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. The proceeds from the sale will go to assist public libraries on the Mississippi Gulf Coast as they continue to recover from Hurricane Katrina. Many of the public libraries are still in limited facilities and have no storage space for book donations. The Friends of Long Beach Public Library are kindly requesting monetary donations instead of book donations at this point. More than 3,000 used books for readers of all ages and interests have been donated for this effort. Prices will range from 50 cents to $2 for the general used books, and up to $5 for some special contributions. He will serve a three-year term on the board.Patel, a Southern Miss alum, hold two degrees from the university, including a bachelor’s degree in computer science and statistics, and a bachelor’s degree in accounting. He also holds three certifications, including CPA, CFE and CICA. He joined the university’s staff in 1990 as a systems analyst, and has served on several university committees.He has been a member of ACUA since joining the university’s audit department and is presently a member of the ACUA Web team.-30- Karnes, Former Student Team Up as Co-AuthorsHattiesburg -- Dr. Frances A. Karnes, professor of curriculum, instruction and special education and director of the University of Southern Mississippi Frances A. Karnes Center for Gifted Studies; and Dr. Tracy Riley, senior lecturer at Massey University in New Zealand have co-authored a chapter in a new book on gifted children and youth. The chapter, titled “Competitions for Gifted and Talented Students! Issues of Excellence and Equity,” is in the book “Serving Gifted Learners Beyond the Traditional Classroom! A Guide to Alternative Programs and Services.” The book is published by Prufrock Press. Drs. Karnes and Riley recently co-authored a book titled “Competitions for Talented Kids.” Dr. Riley received her doctorate with an emphasis in gifted education from the University of Southern Mississippi. -30-Saturday Gifted Studies Programming Set for Spring 2007 at Southern MissHattiesburg -- The Saturday Gifted Studies Program, conducted by the University of Southern MississippiFrances A. Karnes Center for Gifted Studies; and sponsored by Purple Parrot Café, Crescent City Grill and Coldwell Banker; will be conducted Jan. 20 - March 3, 2007, at the University of Southern Mississippi’s Hattiesburg campus. The program is designed to enhance cognitive and affective abilities of gifted students through planned enrichment and acceleration programming. The courses are scheduled for 9 a.m.-noon on each of the seven consecutive Saturdays. The application deadline is Nov. 15, 2006. Careers to be discussed include business development, science and technology, health care, journalism, education, business, military, art, psychology, law, music and sports.Participants do not need to be enrolled in gifted education to attend. Registration will take place from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. in the Joseph Greene Hall on the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi. There is no charge for the conference and lunch is included.
