Yes, the Oak Grove High School drama department took more awards at the Southwest Mississippi Drama Festival than any other high school in its region last week.

Actually - to update this news a bit

Oak Grove High School's Drama Dept. won the Southwest festival last November. They went on to the state of Mississippi drama festival competition in January and won for the entire state! They then represented our state and travelled to Atlanta in March for a national competition. They were runner-up!!

Additionally, there were several individual awards at each competition which I can't remember, including recognition of their talented teacher, Suzanne Allmon.

Not only do we have the top thesbians in Southwest MS but also in the State of Mississippi, and arguably nationally.

By the way, I don't know of any lesbians among the more than 2 dozen hard-working high school men and women in the cast or crew. I know that my daughter, a 10th grader and a cast member, is not a lesbian. ("Not that it matters" says Seinfeld.)

Judge Bustin,

It was never my intentions to insinuate that your daughter is a lesbian.

I just think back to my days at OGHS when the drama department was directed by an outspoken lesbian, made up of many lesbians, and of course the balance of the "straight" team had purple hair and cut their arms for Kurt Cobain. Perhaps it has changed for the better.

And your honor, as an elected official running for reelection, I would advise against posting here on Sunday morning.

Speaking of lesbians, I was thinking to moi, is there one guy out there who doesn't think enough of his sexual prowess that he's thinking if given just one chance, he could convert one to the straight life?:smt118

Never said it was wrong in general.

Not exactly my suggestion, but close. I know that if I were seeking public office in this area the only place I'd want folks to see me on sunday morning is in the pew. Is that right or wrong? Who knows, but one thing I know is perception is everything in politics.

BDD,

If you are concerned about my whereabouts on a Sunday morning, I will be glad to answer your inquiry. (If you are trying to give me advice about political perception and the opportunity to answer a misperception, then I thank you.)

Not all Sunday church is at 11 a.m. My church as 3 Sunday morning services. I attended church yesterday morning and even taught my precious 2nd grade Sunday School class with fellow teachers Dr. Terry Lowe and his wife, Linda, and with Oak Grove school teacher Jan Cawthorn. I wore a brown dress. My entire family -- with the exception of my teenage daughter who is currently out-of-state doing mission work at a refugee camp -- attended with me. My husband was a youth Sunday School teacher yesterday. After all of the services were over, we met up with James and Jasmine, the new Fellowship of Christian Athletes directors at USM. (I am very impressed with them, by the way.) My husband and I treated them to lunch at Crescent City.

Thank you for the opportunity to clear this misperception, BDD.

Now that I have answered any curiosity about my whereabouts on a Sunday, let's get back to what this thread is for: complimenting the Oak Grove High School drama dept and spreading the news.

I don't know anything about the high school drama dept back in your Kurt Cobain 90s, but I can tell you that I don't know of any purple-haired kids in the current group. The teacher, Mrs. Suzanne Allmon, is lovely and talented. She is married and has a cute toddler son. The award-winning play they performed this past Spring - "The Crane Wife" - was beautiful and taught a moral lesson about greed. Ben Baker, pastor Eddie Baker's son, played the lead and was excellent, very professional. Johnna Bush played his wife and brought the audience to tears. Chase Anderson, another pastor's kid, was also excellent with his acting antics! These students worked for months and months and brought positive state-wide attention to Lamar County schools and even national attention to Mississippi. I'm sorry you missed the show, BDD. I'll try to post the details when they start performing this year's, probably around Nov.

KUDOS TO OAK GROVE HIGH SCHOOL DRAMA DEPARTMENT!!! I am one parent who is very proud of you!!

Sincerely, Judge Bustin

Great job Oak Grove Thespians! It takes a lot of hard work and talent by all involved (regardless of sexual orientation or musical preference, again, "not that it matters") to make a project like this work.

Oh my, Judge, calm down...don't go all beaver on me. I understand not all church meets at 11 am. Like I said, perceptions, they can be misleading. Thanks for clearing it up.

I know of the current drama department director. Her husband was one of her former drama students. Completely mainstream, I know. They all are.

Anyway, I'm happy for them. Nonetheless, my characterization of those folks probably isn't so off key, though many would never admit so.

Sorry to "go all beaver" or whatever, BDD, but you picked on me about two things that I would die for -- my faith and my child. Those are two things I will probably always "go all beaver" over!

But you can pick on me about almost anything else (yes I'm talking to you Darth).

Judge Bustin

p.s. thanks for the lesson on appearances

I would be interested in this also. My grandson tried out for and made the drama club for the new school year. He will be attending OGH for the first time. He is also on the football team. I don't know which of these will be his passion, but whatever he chooses, I will support him.
